After a bit of a lull on Monday, MI5 looks poised to distance itself from Inside Out. Excellent for Inside Out. It will have passed 4m by today.

Strong hold for Inside Out. The bigger gap between it and MI5 in pre-sales might have something to do with what I'm about to discuss below. Don't like that hold for MI5 at all. Pre-sales should have done better especially since it only had 10 PM shows last Wednesday. Walk-ins will be very good though. Terrible for Ant-Man. Despite holding better than half, Minions was the only one of the top 4 that decreased in pre-sales when compared with Monday's.

Thursday schedules

Fantastic Four - 7 showings Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation - 8 showings (▼ 13) Monk Comes Down the Mountain
Doraemon: Nobita and the Space Heroes - 3 showings Inside Out (Can.) - 7 showings (▼ 8) What We Do in the Shadows (Can.)

  Monster Hunt - 4 showings (▼ 7)
  Minions Cantonese - 2 showings (▼ 6)
  Jurassic World - 1 showing (=)

Fantastic Four is sharing the biggest screen with Mission Impossible 5 here. FF gets 1 screen at most theaters while MI5 also grabs 1 screen. Inside Out will retain most of its showtimes from Wednesday despite being moved to the 3rd biggest screen. Doraemon will get morning and afternoon showtimes while To The Fore gets 4-5 showtimes. Vacation will be given half day showtimes at select theaters. Pre-sales for Fantastic Four looks good. Mission Impossible is lagging slightly behind FF. Inside Out though is winning massively at most theaters with night shows. At one theater, Inside Out is ahead of FF by 4:1 and 7:1 of MI5. Ant-Man loses 55% of showtimes while Minions gets pummeled by 60%. Monster Hunt is reduced to 3-5 showtimes including a 7 PM showtime.

To The Fore is getting 1 or 2 screens here because it is co-produced by Emperor which owns UA. Fantastic Four also gets 1 screen while Mission Impossible goes down to 1 screen. Pre-sales here show FF out in front of MI5. Doraemon and Vacation lead off with 2-3 showtimes. Holdovers didn't fare so well. Inside Out gets crushed by 60% in showtimes which is really bizarre since it is doing quite well in pre-sales. It has even beaten FF in some places on Thursday. That might explain why its Wednesday pre-sales are higher than usual. Half will continue to play Ant-Man with 1 or 2 showtimes but Minions is given the biggest deathblow with less than 25% of theaters willing to give it another week. Those that do have left it with 1 showtime. Every other holdover is wiped out including Monster Hunt.

MI5 is placed on 2 screens here including the biggest screen while FF gets 1 screen. To the Fore races onto 1 screen. Vacation gets half day showtimes while Doraemon gets half day-full day showtimes. Special release Love Life! School Idol movie gets full day showtimes at 3 theaters. This is doing gangbusters so far with nearly every showtime full or just about. Inside Out gets cut 40%. Ant-Man loses about 70% of showtimes while Minions is dumped by 60%. Monster Hunt is gone.

GH

FF is bestowed the biggest screen here while Inside Out is given the nod over MI5 for the 2nd biggest screen. To The Fore is given 5 showtimes while Doraemon gets 4 showtimes. Ant-Man gets cut in half. Half have whittled it down to just 1 showtime while it will be remain with full day showtimes at other locations. Minions is down about 60% in showtimes here.

The race is on for #1 this weekend. Ho hum for Fantastic Four. Exceptional hold for Inside Out despite the UA blow on Thursday. Mission Impossible 5 crumbled. I didn't expect it to dwindle so much in just 1 week. Even its weekday admissions were not that great. It will probably stay at #1. Solid start for Doraemon. Poor for To the Fore. Ant-Man, Minions died. Love Live should be ranked 5th with more than 2,000 admissions. 3 theaters showing it are not being tracked by the website. Disaster for Vacation. Bad for Monster Hunt.

Decent start for F4 but reviews haven't been kind so far. Walk-ins were excellent today but will they continue to be brisk during the weekend? Disappointing hold for MI5. If it had done better Monday-Wednesday, Thursday schedules would have been in its favor. Now that showings are about a quarter full or half full on weekday afternoons, this has allowed Inside Out to trickle back in. Outstanding hold for Inside Out despite losing about 1/3 in showtimes from last Thursday and the UA slashing. Inside Out will likely experience the opposite of what happened last weekend. This week, Thursday/Friday should hold slightly weaker while Saturday/Sunday will hold exceptionally strong, perhaps even increase. Good start for Doraemon. Theaters are increasing this on the weekend. Poor for To The Fore despite getting rave reviews from the general public. Terrible holds for Ant-Man and Minions. Minions is still on track to pass 10m but had it had any one of Monsters University's negative factors on opening weekend (EDKO release, no holiday sneaks, direct competition on opening weekend and beyond, theater politics/reluctance), it would not have passed 10m. Ghastly for Vacation. Bleh for Monster Hunt. Love Live! should be ranked 6th or 7th.

Missing: Love Live! The School Idol Movie

Way better hold for MI5. Big increase for IO due to upgrades from UA and a handful of theaters giving this more showtimes on Friday. Weak increase for Fantastic Four. Superhero movies should be aiming for a 40-50% increase in pre-sales on Friday. Big drop for Doraemon due to rush factor on Thursday. Not good for To the Fore. This will get downgraded on Saturday/Sunday. Holdovers all had bad holds while Vacation is an absolute mess.

Fantastic Four/MI5 gets the biggest screens at most places, however, Inside Out's performance has wormed its way into theater operator's minds and some have put this on the biggest screen. GH seems to be most receptive toward Inside Out's early admission selling prowess with a couple of them scheduling Inside Out on the biggest screen for the whole day.

Disappointing pre-sales for Fantastic Four. It did not even sell 10% of the seats. WOM might be playing a huge effect already. Even more surprising is that both 11 AM shows have less seats sold than the 9 AM showing. Just ok for Mission Impossible 5. Good night shows. Incredible for Inside Out. The 11 AM showtime is more than half full after being out for 1 morning. This theater is one of a few Inside Out's strongholds. UA will definitely be kicking themselves for not scheduling it with full day showtimes.

I believe that the reported Thursday numbers for Ant-Man and Love Live! are both wrong. According to other sources, the top 10 looked like this in gross.

1. Fantastic Four

2. Mission Impossible 5

3. Inside Out

4. To the Fore

5. Doraemon

6. Ant-Man

7. Love Live!

8. Minions

9. Vacation

10. Monster Hunt

Take those 2 numbers with a grain of salt.

Nice start for Fantastic Four but Mission Impossible 5 is winning this weekend. Considering the competition and sequel opening day rush factor, that is a decent hold for MI5. Great for Inside Out. Could this sneak into #2 for the weekend? Poor for To the Fore. Ok start for Doraemon. Ant-Man had a rough hold. Strong for Love Live! Minions drifted away. Abysmal for Vacation.

Incredible for Inside Out. Despite the UA scheduling, it is still ahead of MI5 and FF. This might be #2 for the weekend depending on FF's performance this weekend. MI5 is slowing its fall in pre-sales with each passing day. Very good. Disastrous for Fantastic Four. Solid for Doraemon. Very good increase for To the Fore. Bad for Ant-Man. Opposite to what MI5 has been doing, Minions has seen its pre-sales week-to-week drop grow bigger as this weekend progresses. Now that's what I'm talking about with respect to Love Live!'s admissions. Vacation is not having the time of its life so far.

New poll up. Have fun!

I wish IO could have more showtimes.

Same here. Similar thing happened with Monsters University. Not the first time that this has happened to Pixar.

What total is IO looking for, something like Minions, or will it be no were near?

I'm going to be ballsy and say 8m. It'll make more than 5m after this weekend but it still has to deal with UNCLE and Pixels.

Wow, 8M would be unbelievable.

Anything over 50M hkd will be a great result.

5m is amazing already after seeing what Minions did this summer. 50m HKD is going to happen by the following Wednesday.

Aside from the top 3, it looks like there's some life left for To the Fore.

Good increase for Inside Out but I expected more. It should be able to beat out F4 in admissions for the day. Not liking that increase for MI5. F4 is holding on for now. Great jump for Doraemon. To the Fore bumped up nicely today in pre-sales as well.

  Weekend Projections     August 6
Rank Movie TW % chg Total
1 Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation $1,290,000 -50.5% $4,495,000
2 Fantastic Four $1,140,000   $1,140,000
3 Inside Out $990,000 -13.2% $5,140,000
4 To the Fore $355,000   $375,000
5 Doraemon: Nobita and the Space Heroes $230,000   $230,000

Not a good hold for MI5. The marketplace was too saturated with action films and F4/IO took away some of the attention from MI5. With pretty good reviews, it should have held better but it fell apart from Monday-Wednesday and then theater owners were confused when F4 won on opening day. As for F4, it was kind of hilarious and sad to see theaters scheduling this on the biggest theater on the weekend when its Friday pre-sales were saying otherwise. F4 performed at expectations. Theaters were ready to put this on 2 screens if need be but it faltered after only one day. Inside Out had another powerful hold. Sunday will be its best day as theaters are adding more showtimes and some are transferring the 2D showings from Saturday into 3D on Sunday. It will pass a 3 multiplier and 5m by the end of this weekend with plenty of life still left but up next is another action film, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. To the Fore opened softly on Thursday but poured it on on Friday/Saturday to extend its lead over Doraemon this weekend. The opening was below expectations so I do not expect much mercy even if it does well on Monday. Doraemon had pretty much identical opening weekend numbers compared with the past July/August summer Doraemon releases.

Saw a lot of this for IO today.

Big decrease for MI5. IO held very well from last Sunday. IO managed to close the gap and even built a small lead over F4. Going from a 10,000 adm. deficit on Thursday to nearly a 1,500 lead on Sunday is amazing. Not a bad hold for F4 on Sunday. Walk-ins are very strong for this movie.

Is this the start of IO's decline? IO's walk-ins on weekdays have been extremely good though. The loss of UA theaters/showings have hurt its weekend hold and will continue into Monday but today some of the other theaters have upgraded it to bigger screens or even left it with 2 screens at night. Mediocre hold for MI5. Terrible for F4.

Great hold for Inside Out. What's encouraging about its admissions is that it had more walk-ins than MI5. Decent hold for MI5. Atrocious for Fantastic Four. Pretty good for To the Fore. Ok for Doraemon. Mediocre for Ant-Man. Vacation beating Minions is a surprise.

Excellent that IO has increased again on Monday from its Thursday admissions. Not bad for MI5. Dreadful for F4. Very good for To the Fore. Big pre-sales for Doraemon on Thursday leads to big Monday from Thursday drop here. Good hold for Ant-Man. Vacation increasing from Thursday is interesting.

Strong for Inside Out. Meh for MI5. F4 is going down hard.

Early Outlook

Attack On Titan gets ready to descend on HK as early scheduling has it on 1-2 screens at Broadway/AMC with it getting the biggest screen at all locations while it gets a screen at MCL but only the 3rd/4th biggest screen at most theaters. GH is putting AoT on the 3rd biggest screen. Newport is putting this on their biggest screen.

Inside Out retains all showtimes at Broadway/AMC with a slight reduction in screens with the 10 PM show. MCL is mixed. Some have upgraded to the biggest theater while others have reduced its showtimes by 1 or 2. GH is putting this on the biggest screens. One theater at Newport is putting it back on this Thursday after dropping it on weekdays last week.

MI5 and F4 get downsized with theaters split on who is given the bigger screen over the other.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. gets half day showtimes at Broadway/AMC but is getting full day showtimes at MCL. GH will show it 5 times a day.

Those theaters showing Paper Towns are only giving it 2-3 showings per day.

Doraemon/To the Fore also see their showtimes slashed on Thursday.

So 6M$ against next weekend right?

Yes. Inside Out will make 6m by next weekend.

August 6 Weekend Actuals

1. Mission Impossible 5 - $1,280,000 (-51%)/$4,860,000

2. Fantastic Four - $1,070,000

3. Inside Out - $960,000 (-16%)/$5,110,000

4. To the Fore - $409,000

5. Doraemon: Nobita and the Space Heroes - $267,000

Ant-Man - $6,234,607

Minions - $9,932,610

Love Live! The School Idol Movie - $98,000

Vacation - $93,800

Not a good hold for Mission Impossible 5 but at least it repeated at #1. Despite F4's struggles during the weekend, it performed at expectations. Excellent hold for Inside Out. Underwhelming opening for To the Fore. Doraemon opened about the same as the most recent Doraemon summer releases. Ant-Man held pretty badly but at least it passed 6m. Minions has passed Harry Potter 7-2. Next up is Monsters University plus 10m. Love Live! opened with a scorching $24,500 PTA. Vacation was a massive failure this weekend.
