Avengers 2, Avatar 2. I don't see any other film this year coming close.

Thanks. I thought with the popularity of superheroes in general, MOS could challenge it. Btw, is the release date for MOS good? I hope it can do well.

June 27. It's a prime release date for blockbusters but 2 weeks later Monsters University comes out and then Pacific Rim 1 week after that. Pacific Rim was supposed to come out on July 11 but it didn't want to deal with Monsters U so they pushed that back 1 week.

Wednesday final admissions

1. Fast & Furious 6 - 11,537
2. Star Trek Into Darkness - 7,360
3. Iron Man 3 - 5,296
4. Pee Mak Phra Khanong - 4,606
5. The Great Gatsby - 4,297

Below Battleship and Sherlock Holmes Wednesday night previews.

Thursday adm. (so far)   May 23
Rank Title LW TW % chg
1 Fast & Furious 6 -- 6,404 --
2 Star Trek Into Darkness 4,538 2,133 -53.0%
3 Iron Man 3 2,579 1,282 -50.3%
4 The Great Gatsby 1,521 1,196 -21.4%
5 Christmas Rose -- 971 --
6 Pee Mak Phra Khanong 436 692 +58.7%
7 21 and Over -- 403 --
8 Quartet -- 244 --
9 The Call 405 211 -47.9%
10 Searching for Sugar Man -- 182 --

Fast & Furious is off and running. Those admissions are up 103.2% from Fast Five opening day pre-sales. Good holds for Star Trek Into Darkness and Iron Man 3. Strong for The Great Gatsby. Not good for Christmas Rose. WOW for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. Awful for 21 and Over. Decent for Quartet. The Call is still catching viewers. Good rebound for Searching for Sugar Man from last Thursday.

The FF movies are really not popular here. Evening big increase doesnot make the number impressive.

LOL. It's impressive. First of all, it doubled Fast Five's opening day pre-sales even with an extra day and ticket price hikes. Second, Fast & Furious series is known for big jumps on the weekend. This will make over 1m this weekend.

  Thursday adm.     May 23
Rank Title LW TW % chg
1 Fast & Furious 6 -- 21,137 --
2 Star Trek Into Darkness 13,513 4,940 -63.4%
3 Pee Mak Phra Khanong 2,713 3,685 +35.8%
4 Iron Man 3 10,214 3,462 -66.1%
5 Christmas Rose -- 3,368 --
6 The Great Gatsby 6,661 2,954 -55.7%
7 21 and Over -- 1,271 --
8 The Call 2,990 756 -74.7%
9 A Chorus of Angels -- 584 --
10 Searching for Sugar Man 605 471 -22.1%
Average hold for Star Trek 2. The Friday holiday inflated Thursday admissions so it's not a bad hold per se, but it could have held better. Amazing for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. It should pass $550,000 this weekend. OK for Iron Man 3. People turned out in droves on the holiday to see it so it will see slightly larger drops today and tomorrow compared with the rest of the holdovers. Pretty weak for Christmas Rose. OK hold for The Great Gatsby. Yes, it held up better than Star Trek 2 and Iron Man 3 but dramas are least affected by holidays, even long running time ones. Terrible for 21 and Over. They should have just canceled its release if their big master plan was to release it 2 weeks before The Hangover 3 (and they even scheduled it for next week before they thought that was a bad idea...). The Call is no longer the special one. Its had some great legs. Good for A Chorus of Angels. Admirable for Searching for Sugar Man.

Great for Fast & Furious 6. Opening day admissions is up an incredible 76% from Fast Five. Bonus for Fast & Furious 6 is that WOM is at a sparkling 100% with over 50 ratings in from Wednesday night and Thursday.

If we look at the comparison chart between the last two Fast & Furious films,
  Daily admissions (OW)
Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Total
Fast Five   12,031 14,537 26,557 22,939 76,064
Fast & Furious 6 11,537 21,137       32,674
Gap 11,537 20,643 6,106 -20,451 -43,390
we see that Fast & Furious 6 will certainly beat Fast 5 in admissions and gross. Fast & Furious 6 is almost halfway there to beating Fast 5's admissions with 3 very big days still to come. If you take Wednesday out, it would only need to add Saturday's admissions to beat Fast Five. Fast & Furious 6 is expected to nearly double Fast Five's admissions with that Thursday number.

A good comparison for Fast & Furious 6 would be Overheard 2 which caught fire 2 summers ago.
  Daily admissions (OW)
Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Total
Overheard 2   18,374 26,363 51,196 55,552 151,485
Fast & Furious 6 11,537 21,137       32,674
Gap 11,537 14,300 -12,063 -63,259 -118,811
Fast & Furious 6 is up about 3,000 on Thursday and has a 14,000 admissions edge over Overheard 2 heading into Friday. What separates the 2 is that Overheard 2 had an outstanding weekend whereas Fast & Furious 6's lead will come from Wednesday-Friday. There's a chance that Fast & Furious 6 could beat Overheard 2's Saturday admissions if walk-ins come out in full force but pre-sales are much higher this time around and since it's an action blockbuster admissions will be more spread out.

For gross, Fast & Furious 6 is looking at a projected 1.2-1.3m including Wednesday, which means it will more than double Fast 5 money wise.

Friday adm. (so far)     May 24
Rank Title LW TW WKD % chg QD % chg
1 Fast & Furious 6 -- 8,954 -- +39.8%
2 Star Trek Into Darkness 12,123 3,141 -74.1% +47.3%
3 The Great Gatsby 6,572 2,303 -65.0% +92.6%
4 Iron Man 3 14,745 1,851 -87.4% +44.4%
5 Christmas Rose -- 1,348 -- +38.8%
6 Pee Mak Phra Khanong 1,409 1,021 -27.5% +47.5%
7 21 and Over -- 570 -- +41.4%
8 The Call 2,180 355 -83.7% +45.5%
9 A Chorus of Angels 374 349 -6.7% --
10 Searching for Sugar Man 715 259 -63.8% +42.3%

Very strong increase in pre-sales for Fast & Furious 6 on Friday. Fast Five had a marginal 13% gain on Friday so this is an indicator that it's not frontloaded and that it should play well into the weekend.

You can really see the disparity between Star Trek 2, The Great Gatsby and Iron Man 3. All 3 had bad holds from last Friday (with The Great Gatsby least affected and Iron Man 3 most affected by the holiday). Still not good for Christmas Rose. Excellent for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. It's not playing like a normal horror movie. The fact that it's Thailand's biggest movie ever might be having some momentum among people plus WOM remains very high. Garbage for 21 and Over. Now that attention has turned to others, The Call is having steep declines. Very good for A Chorus of Angels. Searching for Sugar Man will bounce back with walk-ins.

Big opening day for Fast & Furious 6. Bad holds for Star Trek 2, Iron Man 3 and The Great Gatsby. Superb hold for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. Not good for Christmas Rose. Awful for 21 and Over.

Not bad for Fast & Furious 6. I did see admissions go down twice today so it might have had more admissions than what's there. Fast & Furious 6 had a lower % increase than Fast 5 on Friday but they both saw nearly identical admissions increases on Friday.

Fast & Furious 6 will pass Fast 5's admissions today.

Fast & Furious 6's Thursday advantage has been wiped out with the weaker Friday.

Terrible holds for Star Trek 2, The Great Gatsby and Iron Man 3. Fantastic hold for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. Bland for Christmas Rose. 21 and Over is doing bad. The Call gets silenced. OK for Quartet. Good for Searching for Sugar Man.

Solid increase for Fast & Furious 6. OK for Star Trek 2. Still not good for Iron Man 3. Acceptable for The Great Gatsby. Very good for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. It will become Thailand's biggest horror movie in the past few years after this weekend. Christmas Rose is lacking in power. Worst increase of the top 10 for 21 and Over. This is done. Harsh drop for The Call. Not bad for Quartet. Super for Searching for Sugar Man.

Saturday wasn't as kind for Fast & Furious 6 in regards to the battle with Overheard 2. Overheard 2 won by 10,000 admissions and has just about brought the gap back to 0. Overheard 2 will handily win the weekend over Fast & Furious 6 in admissions.

Huge admissions for Fast & Furious 6.

UPDATED May 23 Weekend Estimates

  Daily admissions (OW)

Gap 11,537 14,300 11,558 1,524 -12,822
It ended up losing to Overheard 2 but its performance this weekend was not too shabby.

  Daily admissions (OW)
Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Total
Fast Five   12,031 14,537 26,557 22,939 76,064

Gap 11,537 20,643 29,727 44,332 62,599
Fast & Furious 6 nearly doubled Fast Five's admissions. That Sunday gain is a good indicator that it will hold well next weekend. The lack of competition will also hugely benefit Fast & Furious 6.

May 23 Weekend Actuals

1. Fast & Furious 6 - $1,185,054 (weekend actual)
2. Star Trek 2 - $1,713,176 [$315,000 WKD (-72.8%)]
3. The Great Gatsby - $866,892 [$240,000 WKD (-51.4%)]
4. Iron Man 3 - $13,416,875 [$210,000 WKD (-73.8%)]
5. Pee Mak Phra Khanong - $582,222 [$200,000 WKD (-19.1%)]
6. Christmas Rose - $136,538 (weekend actual)
7. 21 and Over - $45,083 (weekend actual)
8. The Call - $443,107 [$35,000 WKD]
9. Quartet - $20,609 (weekend actual)

Everything was underestimated. Fast & Furious 6 takes out Star Trek 2's admissions and gross. It will pass Star Trek 2's total, Fast Five and 2m all by the end of next week. Star Trek 2 is looking good for 2m still but it will finish with less than a 2 multiplier. The Great Gatsby is set to overthrow Moulin Rouge as Baz Luhrmann's biggest movie in HK. Iron Man 3 is just $500,000 HK away from #2 all-time. Pee Mak Phra Khanong had an exceptional hold, however, horror movies the next 2 weeks should slice into its earnings. Bad for Christmas Rose. Disgusting for 21 and Over. If people wanted to go see another Hangover, they will wait 2 weeks to see Hangover 3. The Call got slammed and $500,000 is looking shaky. Quartet was meh.
