Biggest Omissions from 1001 Movies list

Recommended Posts

I definitely think the list is missing some iconic films from the list. Below are 100 that have never been on the list.

Some of the most notable problems with the list - relatively lacking in kids/family films, as well as fun films past 1990. The amount of escapist films featured from the 1977-1990 era, as opposed to modern times is pretty astounding.

Is the answer to increase from 1001 to 1501? Considering they already have removed 160+ films at some point over just 10 years, it seems logical.

Some very good additions there.

Other movies I think should have been included, or am surprised weren't included:

Safety Last! (1923)

The Caine Mutiny (1954)

Cape Fear (1962)

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)

The Blues Brothers (1980)

Escape from New York (1981)

Sixteen Candles (1984)

The Iron Giant (1999)

^The further down that list I got the more it seemed to be grasping at straws. If people don't see Saw or Gran Torino before they die I don't think they should exactly have any regrets about it.

You're right on Saw and Gran Torino  but I don't see how most of the 21st century stuff is grasping at straws. They're all critically acclaimed and more inspired picks for their respective years than picking just what got nods/awards. It's what the list starts doing after 1990 - you see less crowdpleasers and more what was nominated for Best Picture.

I would call Frozen and This is the End more must-see than American Hustle.

The Avengers and Perks of Being a Wallflower both surpass Les Miz in terms of how urgent it is to see them.

Rango is better than most of the 2011 entries.

HTTYD was as critically acclaimed as Toy Story 3.

Coraline and Zombieland were both pretty superb films in times of year not known for quality genre entries.

Iron Man 1 launched the MCU (removed Gran Torino)

Wallace and Gromit is easily one of the best of 2005 - it should have been nominated for BP over Crash IMO.

All of the ones from 2004 are pretty self-explanatory (removed Saw).

Same for 2003, although I could see a case argued against Old School or Bad Santa

2002 I'm indifferent to... I do not mind if there's no films added from that year

2001 - same as 2003/2004. Each are pretty recognizable/quotable.

2000 - Chicken Run and Cast Away are pretty acclaimed. Remember the Titans I wouldn't mind removing. Especially since I forgot Hoosiers and Rudy.

I tried to stick to acclaimed commercial hits

Honestly, I found the 1001 movies list to be very flawed. Those are not the 1001 movies that you have to see before you die. In fact, if I never see some of them, I won't be missing out.

It tries to be a balance between arthouse and tentpole... and really succeeds at neither. It just ends up excluding some films that you wonder how they didn't make the list (Great Dictator, Bambi, My Neighbor Totoro, Animal House, Superman, Hoosiers, Dead Poets Society, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Good Will Hunting, etc).

2000-present is almost exclusively arthouse or Oscar bait. 19 mainstream/tentpole films that aren't exclusively Oscar bait out of the 150-160 from the 21st century.

That is going to happen with a 1001.

Which is why at this point, increasing the limit to 1501 would make sense. All 1160+ films that have been on the list at some point get featured while some glaring omissions or all-time classics finally make it onto the list.
