The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

I have never done this before(looking at Pan US AMC reserved ticket sales). So there is no reference. but it looks like > 200K ticket sales in just these reserved theaters. its missing sellouts(you cant grab data for sellouts as they are removed in the system) plus there are other chains. That said at absolute terms the number is HUGE and still has huge number of screens and seats for walkins. So I am thinking low teens(13-14m). That said other reports from @Porthos @Eric , @FlashMaster659and @Menor are showing number closer to IT2 and they have been consistently doing it. So take my prediction with a grain of salt. -

Mid Day Update. I see quite a few sellouts in NYC, LA, SF etc. Alamo Drafthouse shows are selling out big as they tend to be small screens. -

I managed to look at 324 theaters(2973) shows which covered most theaters outside of NY, Texas, LA. Not practical to run everytime as it took 2 hours to run !!!!! I missed probably dozen of reserved theaters but it would not have made a huge difference in larger perspective. AMC US Previews (324 Theaters/2973 shows) Total:71450/506603 Overall ticket sales in AMC reserved theaters more than 140K plus all the sellouts and so I am thinking it must be 150K+. Probably at 2M+ just for thursday previews across these reserved theaters. In most smaller markets I see AMC "Classic" theaters which does not have any reserved screens. I will be an optimist to predict low teens previews with huge walkins today as there are still lots of seats available. -

Day 10(T-1). We are close to endgame. It appears Joker is two-faced. Really strong in NYC, LA, DC but weaker in Texas or Florida. Empire 25 all premium shows are close to sellout and will sellout tomorrow. 9 2d shows have disappeared and few others are filling up as well. I am curious if it will cross 3500 tickets tomorrow. That is the target. San Francisco had a huge bump as well. Lots of premium shows almost sold out and prime 2d shows are filling up as well. One of the strongest markets when it comes to % of tickets sold Few city/state level update. more than 75K tickets sold across 7 regions. That is around $1.2m worth as big cities and Imax/PLF ticket prices are crazy and they are huge % of overall sold tickets. This is still not overall number as sellouts are not showing and AMC is probably 1/3 of overall market if not lower. I am sensing low teens preview at minimum based on this but there are no prior precedent and so take it with a grain of salt. -

AMC Texas Previews (46 Theaters/456 shows) Total:8704/79865 I missed one theater in Corpus Christi(which has tons of shows and 2 sellouts).it will be there when I run this again. Otherwise the numbers are weak % wise compared to NYC/LA. I guess that is to be expected for this movie. -

So LA has higher % sales while there are more plexes in NYC larger metro area and so has higher sales overall. Cant wait to see how SW9 does in these regions. Of course data will be warped if it has insane level of sellouts. -

Joker Previews AMC NYC/NJ/PA Area Previews (47 theaters/820 shows) Total:23081/103836 This is not the complete data as @Porthos said sellout shows are removed from the showlist. Empire 25 has 9 shows removed while Lincoln Square has 2 removed. So actual number of tickets sold would be 10/20% more. Still it gives us some perspective. I am thinking its gonna at least double if not more from this point till tomorrow release. I will take final update tomorrow night to confirm numbers. -

Thanks. I was wondering the same for Empire 25 which had listed 5 sold out shows and then removed them all together !!!!. So this data should be taken in context that we will not have too many sellouts unless its a Endgame level hype. I think nothing beats doing this manually but its lots of work and so this is the best effort data which gives some kind of macro perspective. I wonder what happens when customerscancel their tickets and so how would that work for the theater. Would they relist the show back? -

At last I figured out how to extract all the showtimes for a area. So here is updated data for Joker in LA area. I hope it doubles and sells around 40K tickets which would be like 750K+ in that area for just 34 AMC theaters !!!!! AMC LA Area(522 shows) Total:21307/85137 -
Audience rating is at 9.18 now and so its not bad at all.

Was it a normal day or a holiday or special day where ticket sales are boosted?

Probably not a movie worth tracking so far from release. may be week out will be a good time start tracking this. But this is looking a huge under performer. I dont know why disney did not wait until next spring or summer to release this. -

Fandango would be awesome as its across chains. Even doing it for 4-5 top cities would give a macro perspective into the BO. -

I was a programmer in unix and so I do it in shell script. There is no way to automate as the page that shows the show list for a location does it after a refresh. So I do that manually. But that is one time activity. Once you have the show list it can be automated. Its a dirty way of doing it but any refresh is just running a script. Its not a rocket science. its just web scraping. once you have a page link its just pulling it and reading the data. Just look at page source to get the required information. But let us keep it low key it could be shutdown if they change the code. I am not able to pull in from 3rd party sites like Fandango or Atom. -

This has hype and Joker is as well known a character as there is. I wish it could have had a middle kingdom release but well its going to pull a Suicide Squad kind of run. -

I extract showtimes from the webpage and run a shell script. I am too lazy to do it manually. Empire alone was killing me. Next step I am trying to do it at national level but so far not successful. -

Looked at miami area AMC theaters. it has 88 preview shows and is currently at 2761/16228 which is quite good. Let us see if it sells at least 6000 tickets across these 88 shows by the time previews happen. Also AMC Orlando Area(57 shows) Total:1463/9402 -

T-3(Day 8 ) Very good day as expected. Exceeded final count of IT2 at Empire 25 already. At AMC and all other sites 5 2d shows are listed as sellouts. It happened rather suddenly and so I want to hold off before accounting for them(will do on wed if it still there). That would add almost another 1000 tickets sold at Empire !!!!! Tracked few more AMC theaters at NYC area and overall number almost 10K in just that region. That is close to 200K in preview sales from 22 theaters in that area. I am confident its breaking out big. SF had another awesome day. Huge PS at Metreon. overall tracked 3500 tickets sold in 8 AMC theaters(added 4 more).
