  1. To make $50-60 mln total you should have at least $20-25 mln opening nowadays. For 70-80 mln at least $30-35 mln opening. And this might be close to current market capacity. Such huge numbers will depend on other factors. Like weather for example. Screen count and average number of shows are also very important. This is always a tough game between theaters and distributors.
  2. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/cis/opening/Mojo numbers in USD but there might be inaccuracy is some numbers. And exchange rates fluctuations also can change a lot.
  3. $26.7m 4day and $31.45 dayAny multiplyer higher than 2.5 here is pretty good. Week 3 means sudden death for most of the movies.
  4. Top opening weekends in RUB (29.5 RUB = 1 USD) 1. Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 749.1 mln 4 day - 879.6 mln 5day 2. Shrek Forever After 604.4 mln 3. Avatar 601.9 mln 4. Shrek the Third 312.1 mln 25. Mummy 3 310.6 mln
  5. Fast Five was a sequel for a well-known franchise and still managed around 5. Thor had 6+. Normally weekend multiplyers outside of summer are between 6 and 8. For kids movies could be up to 13-16.
  6. No. The lowest possible multiplyer should be 5.5. Usually movies increase on Friday, then again on Saturday and slightly fell on Sunday, Like 1-1.2-1.7-1.6. It's the worst case scenario.
  7. No, first early numbers usually emerge on Friday evening. Sometimes Friday afternoon. Word of mouth though looks rather mediocre.
  8. Next week the Avengers will have IMAX previews. Still only 20 screens though.
  9. It's 2D so the tickets are much cheaper but the audience is pretty much the same. That would be still one of the best starts for a 2D film. From the original films (non-sequels) in last 2 years only Prince of Persia did better.
  10. It is called The Sea Battle on Russian. As well as the game.
  11. Yeah, some of my colleagues expect at least $7-8m+ total for it. Our independent distributors are always trying to secure as many screens as they can. But it bombed very hard in UK. And The Raven grossed $1,303,351 on 667 screens.
  12. The Avengers will be released between two big national holidays: May 1st and 9th. It will be a very crowded weekend.Holdovers from 26.04Street Dance 2 800+Safe 550+Pirates! The Band of Misfits 750The Intouchables 250Two local films with 850 and 150 screens3.05. releasesWhite Tiger (Rus) 550ATM 100+The Match (Rus) 1000+Friends with Kids 250+The Avengers 1200+A Few Best Men 500+Those 12 films require 7000 screens at the same time. And Russia got only around 2800. I have no idea how our theaters will manage it. There will be also some limited releases and holdovers from past weeks. It's all because of holidays. Like Christmas in US and some other countries.
  13. It is a very strong contender for our the most elite club - 1 billion RUB (around $33.7m by current exchange rate). Only 11 movies currently made it. And John Carter most likely will miss it with 991.6 mln RUB by now.
  14. Both Men in Black movies were very popular and they are still popular on Russian TV. The second one grossed $6.7m. It was #2 all-time after FoTR.
  15. Battleship prelimiNary screens count went up to 800+. The Avengers to 1200+The Avengers will have IMAX preview from 26.04Early report also says 1500+ for Men in Black 3, Madagascar 3 and G.I. Joe 2
  16. Some thoughts before I'm finally going to sleep. A tough day tomorrow with US and Russian box office reports ahead. Titanic is doing pretty good. Partly it's because our major theater chains slightly increased number of shows compared to first week. Might gross around $14-14.5m at least. American Reunion drop is expected, but still nothing to be ashamed of. Probably wiil finish with around $12.5m total. Obviously a very good start for 21 Jump Street. Not great but still okay for The Cabin in the Woods.Wrath of Titans after a better start further fell behind after Clash of Titans. 636m vs 663m in RUB. Won't reach even 2 multiplyer. Around $23-23.5 total. Dark Tide and Act of Valor both expectedly bombed. There was no need to bring them to big screens here. Poor Muppets. A pretty dumb decision to wait 5 months and then dump a movie. The Lion King still doing great for a re-release. School holidays also helped though. The Hunger Games and Lorax are nearly finished their run. Bel Ami dropped like a rock. Have no idea about The Raven. Still anything much above $2000 per screen will greatly surprise me
  17. That's another funny part of russian film market. This particular distributor Top Film since last December doesn't provide box office numbers anymore. Some of our box office analytics in the past accused Top Film in stealing money by underreporting grosses. Maybe they just got tired and angry. Now since last December box office grosses for their releases are never to be found. Most of them bombed terribly by the way. Updated estimates: 1. Titanic 3,121,149 (-39%) 10,363,118 2. American Reunion 2,453,020 (-54%) 9,650,017 3. 21 Jump Street 2,377,624 on 473 screens 4. Wrath of the Titans 1,174,497 (-71%) 21,870,702 5. The Spy 1,033,557 (-54%) 3,819,232 6. The Cabin in The Woods 1,024,685 on 358 screens 7. Project X 570,470 (-53%) 3,092,683 8. Dark Tide 402,685 on 404 screens 9. The Lion King 3D 236,613 (-63%) 6,384,537 10. The Muppets 187,920 on 384 screens 11. The Hunger Games 154,520 (-77%) 13,323,060 12. Act of Valor 144,295 on 200 screens 13. Bel Ami 104,027 (-83%) 3,068,033 14. Lorax 60,403 (-77%) 15,953,914 15. Raid 49,010 (-60%) 220,610 Numbers in bold are actuals.
  18. First very early estimates.1. Titanic 3.34m2. American Reunion 2.61m3. 21 Jump Street 2.52m4. Wrath of the Titans 1.26m5. The Spy (Rus) 1.08m
  19. It is all very complicated. There is a common stereotype that russians like french movies but that is mostly for broad comedies and some hard action movies. Young people mostly watch movies in theaters while the old generation is quite happy with TV. Our distibutors are mostly lazy and incompetent. They can provide decent marketing only for action blockbasters and some comedies with huge TV support from prime channels. And piracy is rampant. It is killing everything. Also number of screens is not very high for such population so it is always hard enough to find screens and shows for such releases. Distributors and theaters do not trust foreign films without big stars, they do not know what to do with them, they do not know how to advertise them. And some of them simply do not care. Many such film were dumped without any advertising or even proper information. It is really hurt to see that. Rien à déclarer and Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis grossed 300k both put together. Le Petit Nicolas was released on 1 screen two years after France.
  20. I know my English is far from perfect but I never use google to translate something to Russian. French or Spanish to Russian translation is too ugly and often uncomprehensible. French or Spanish to English work much better.
  21. Well, it's pretty easy to translate and besides a friend of mine wrote it. And google translator sucks then it come to Russian. There is nothing new there. Titanic dropped by 37% on Thursday and American Pie 4 by 58%. Titanic should win the weekend and it would be the first time since Prince of Persia when a movie claimed #1 spot for the first time on its 2nd weekend (except for holidays). He also compared American Pie 4 to Hangover 2 (-53% on 2nd Thursday) and Bad Teacher (-67%). Current estimates from screendaily are $2.7m for both Titanica and American Reunion, $2m for 21 Jump Streen and $1.1 m for Cabin in the Woods. But those numbers might be inaccurate. I will have full estimates and some actuals on Monday.
  22. Many huge by local standards efforts to create an event Russian movie failed miserably. Barber of Syberia, The Inhabited Island, Burnt by the Sun 2, The Nutcracker in 3D, August, 8th and others. Many people don't trust Russian movies anymore and it is very hard to find a credible director for the next big budgeted effort.
  23. History and fantasy epics are just way to popular in Russia. King Arthur, Prince of Persia, Narnia, The Last Samurai, Clash of The Titans, Alexander, Troy, and now John Carter. And many others.John Carter had the help of major national holiday on March, 8 so its opening was inflated. That's why it hardly managed to get 2 multiplyer. There is no way Avengers will beat it step aside make $20m on opening. Avengers might be a cool movie for fanboys but the general audience mostly doesn't care about comic books. Captain America last year grossed $8.7 mln on 1000+ screens. Iron Man 2 was well liked sequel but still nothing particularly excited. Thor went to above mentioned category of fantasy epics and grossed $16.5 mln. And you are also severely overestimating Spider-Man. It's a reboot but who needs it? Spider-Man movies were moderate hits but none of them was particurarly liked here. The trailers got rather mild reaction. It's a wild card but predicting 40-50m? You need to cool off a bit.
  24. Pirates of The Caribbean 4 - 1716 Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows 2 1562 Yolki 2 1467 Transformers 3 1385 Shadow Boxing 3 1350 Kung Fu Panda 1337 Puss in Boots 1299 Rio 1297 Breaking Dawn 1268 Conan 1220 Cars 1200 Sherlock Holmes 2 1195 Many mediocre films could easily get 800-1000 screens here. The Darkest Hour had 1151. Conan Barbarian 1220. Street Dance 2 bombed in UK but alco could get around 1000 screens here.
  25. It might not have even half of that. 1200 screens was in all our early reports and press releases but actual screen count in many cases you may not know till first Thurday or even Friday. Looks like it was also dumped,
