Actually Black Lightning is a kind of superhero movie. The first ever Russian I suppose. It's about an average young guy who gets for his birthday an old rusty car with ability to fly. People were telling it's a pathetic rip-off but box office grosses were quite good for that time. The others russian films in the chart are quite different. Most of them are comedies, some are adaptations of famous local books, a war movie, biopics and animated films.

No foreign comedy or pure drama in that list. Probably even in top100. No romantic films without vampires. No musicals. Action, animation, fantasy and sometimes sci-fi.

It's a common knowledge in Europe, particularly in spring. You see box office numbers for Thursday and Friday. The whole market suddenly died. Battleship sunk, Safe is below last Statham action flicks, Pirates and Street Dance 2 are dead on arrival. Just look at weekend prediction from kinometro. Everything is so much below predicted numbers.

Those long May holidays in Russia are traditionally famous for going outside, out of the city. And such a good weather right now. It couldn't have been better for holidays. Not so good for movies, of course. It's still April and in my city some people are going to the sea for swimming and bathing. Unbelievable.

It's hot like in the middle of summer. People are going outside. Many have houses in rural areas and they use small plots of land there for growing fruit and vegetables. You still can't learn. Russians don't care about comic books or superheroes. Only action and visuals. You can't compare Russia with those countries. Film markets in english speaking countries are rather close to US market.And you can't make $20m weekend with a working Saturday. Not a chance. Absolutely. Totally. Whatever. It will require at least the best single day gross on Sunday and that is totally impossible. 20+mln for holidays week from Thursday till Wednesday is very likely. But after that every movie will drop like a stone no matter what.

Yes, people definitely like it. And it added more than 400 votes just tonight. Average grade even went higher to 8.870. But it's hard to tell how many of them illegally downloaded it and how many actually saw it in a theater. I have written about this film in every box office report since last november and so many people actually responded. Some were fascinated by fantastic box office grosses, some by equally fantastic reviews. I even wrote two articles expaining its success and phenomenon in Europe. I always tried to persuade people to go and see it on a big screen. To prove that our market is mature enough for a good movie. Not only for big, loud and dumb blockbusters. Unfortunately too many people didn't listen and went to torrents. As for others, our casual moviegoers still haven't got a clue about it.

Let's see. I would say $2-2.3m Friday-Sunday and $2.5-2.7m Monday-Tuesday. So it should have at least $19m after Tuesday. On Thursday The Avengers and another bunch of new releases will kill everything. But still Battleship should make at least $3m to $22-23m total.

Battleship by the way is looking for 70-73% 2nd drop. Maybe even more. But it will surely rebound on Monday and Tuesday.

Minor independent distributors usually do not report numbers on Thursday. Rentrak is also useless here. For the Avengers the demand is really huge. But it is only 20 screens with pretty high ticket prices.
