  1. tele's choices have all been fine except THE SHINING (the stephen king excuse is fucking weak: this is a kubrick movie!) and perhaps INCEPTION (there are a million far worse blockbusters). i will comment on IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE though - could anyone see just a peep of irony in there? particularly the ending.
  2. yeah, okay - it didn't paint the children as evil as the adults. good god, do i really need to qualify my statement with that nonsense?
  3. of course it reflects my political leanings. if anyone imagines they watch a film without any preconceived bias, they're deluding themselves. there is no such thing as 'neutral' or 'unbiased'.
  4. lmao. i didn't say it had to show everything, it should just be, y'know, a little less flag-waving pro-american evil foreigners bullshit. that's all. the best film about the holocaust didn't show anything at all. it's called SHOAH.
  5. tortured by their own. americans were just 'doing their job' and iraqis were doing evil things. even the father had to be threatened with death to give up information.
  6. well, that's what the film does. it labels all iraqis as evil.
  7. it's not "pro-war", hardly anything could actually be classified as saying war is awesome, but it certainly is an iraq war apology, and its "anti-war" kicks come from one side only. that is, if there is any anti-war message, it must simultaneously be an anti-iraq one, because all of the awfulness is stuff that iraqis do to dissidents and american soldiers. never is there a comment on american atrocities, which, given that the iraq war was one giant imperialist experiment, is absolutely unforgivable. then add in the fact that chris kyle is celebrated as a hero, well...yeah. this is unambiguously despicable.
  8. here was my review on criticker by the way: this film. this celebration of america's small successes in iraq. this lament over the colossal damage US soldiers sustained whilst there. above all, this vicious indictment of the subhuman scum that inhabit that godforsaken country. this film - this actual *film* - is smashing box office records worldwide, got an A+ cinemascore, and was nominated for best picture. this film is mandatory viewing for antiwar advocates, if only to destroy any unwarranted fondness one might feel toward humanity. 0.1/10
  9. okay drama about the relationship between mother and son. but it's clearly straining to be 'artsy', with its not-quite-realism often interrupted by fourth-wall soliloquy, fanciful montage, twinkling piano, serious slow-motion, poetry readings and poignant symbolism. it even has a silly metaphor for a title. the result is fairly jumbled and poorly edited. but its attempt at vigour also gives it a fresh feel. can definitely see why some are likening it to a film school project.
  10. btw, isn't it funny that interrogation in this movie actually gives the soldiers the truth, rather than a random jumble of scared words that vaguely sound like what the soldiers want to hear? it's a right-wing fantasy that justifies torture. i heard ZERO DARK THIRTY was equally fictional in that sense.
  11. anyone who calls this antiwar needs to fuck off and watch COME AND SEE. honestly. now that's a movie without any bullshit heroism or vile racism.
  12. peter jackson's entire filmography (aside from the hobbits) is probably at my library, so i should get round to it...

  14. could have been watching a ron howard film, it was that bland.
  15. i am aware of that, but i wasn't going to spend half an hour getting the adjustments perfect just for a cheap jab.
  16. the highest grossing movie that is better than INCEPTION is THE GODFATHER, with $134,966,411. although that says more about the sort of movies that make lots of money than anything else.
  17. i'm just chuckling to myself at the awesomeness of that smiley.
  18. wow, i actually liked this, even more than THE KILLING. 6.5/10
  19. michael curtiz's version. the most condescending treatment of black people i've ever seen in a film.
  20. i haven't seen it yet, but i expect it to replace AMERICAN SNIPER in the #2 spot.
  21. 1. triumph of the will 2. american sniper 3. 300 4. life is beautiful 5. the adventures of huckleberry finn (1960)
