  1. i've been submitting to the tv schedule as of late, and this one was on today.
  2. wtf was i talking about? the ending was the best part of the movie and completely overturned audience expectations.
  3. watch a movie a day. easy! three ages (1923) 3.8 the report (1977) 7.0 pure (2010) 6.8 duel (1971) 5.8 bambi (1942) 5.0 holy motors (2012) 6.5 i only count feature films that i haven't seen before, but anyone can do whatever.
  4. i just listened to excerpts, and it didn't work for me. nor nyman's. have you seen the alloy orchestra one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZkvjWIEcoU
  5. i just rewatched it, and... it's still damn good. another 2012 film that explores the alpha-beta dynamic of male socialisation. the sci-fi aspects are suitably kept in the background, the CGI is economical, and many of the main trio's conversations and mannerisms are greatly reminiscent of the nerdboy 'friends' i used to circle with. not great though: some of the 'thematic' dialogue is a bit obvious, and the found footage aesthetic will always have pros and cons. original score of 8.0. 6.5/10
  6. i saw 396 feature films at home in 2014. well, maybe five or so less counting theatrical viewings. also saw around 300 shorts. so nearly 700 films in total.
  7. the year has now finished. in addition to the 365 listed above, i also watched: 366. a christmas carol (2009) 367. standard operating procedure (2008) 368. the beaches of agnés (2008) 369. the killing of a chinese bookie (1976) 370. 12 dates of christmas (2011) 371. ossessione (1943) 372. universal soldier (1992) 373. bride of frankenstein (1935) 374. universal solider: regeneration (2009) 375. the duchess of langeais (2007) 376. universal soldier: day of reckoning (2012) 377. red white & blue (2010) 378. gilda (1946) 379. apollo 13 (1995) 380. the polar express (2004) 381. le révélateur (1968) 382. rosetta (1999) 383. fantasia (1940) 384. the princess and the rog (2009) 385. the romance of astrée and céladon (2007) 386. picnic at hanging rock (1975) 387. kundun (1997) 388. aliens (1986) 389. empty nest (2008) 390. terminator 2: judgement day (1991) 391. old joy (2006) 392. premium rush (2012) 393. le cercle rouge (1970) 394. the sorrow and the pity (1969) 395. peter pan live! (2014) so that makes 395 features in total. i also watched approximately 300 short films.
  8. i recommend to ethan hunt that he get a subscription to MUBI for $5 a month (or less for 12 months at once). expand your mind and shit.
  9. many of them are films i saw with my family, that i wouldn't have seen otherwise. i don't go to the theatre much by myself. i'll see more 2014 films later on dvd.
  10. here's all the movies i've see form 2014: 9.0 nymphomaniac 7.3 grand budapest hotel 5.8 hacked circuit 5.5 what we do in the shadows 5.5 interstellar 5.5 dark horse 4.0 field punishment no 1 4.0 pride 3.8 the railway man 3.3 peter pan live! 2.5 gone girl 1.5 boyhood so, no. however, i did see pawel's debut [last resort] which i liked a lot, so i'll check it out.
  11. [aliens] is shit. [star wars] is shit. [blade runner] is shit. [interstellar] is far better than all three. though still not good.
  12. so far, eight people have posted lists of at least ten films. i took the first fifty films off of each list and rated them according to this: SCORING the people who have listed so far (#films in brackets, max 50): 8 PEOPLE and the list so far! 13. you're all making me want to see [all is lost]. stripped narratives work great when combined with a pure aesthetic - [a man escaped] is the best example of this.
  14. refreshingly uncool nonsense. i saw this action movie today, and it's better than [terminator 2], which i saw yesterday, and [aliens], which i saw the day before. 4.8/10
  15. robin williams really is just fucking awful. 2.8/10
  16. [apocalypse now] and gaspar noé for sure, but the most obvious connection to me is [fight club], in using brutal alpha-male rituals to study the way in which the call for individual freedom can act as a facade for collective masculine will. of course, it's about a ton of other things as well, and to be honest it all comes together as a bit of a mess, but then again, the way the narrative keeps one as utterly clueless as the protagonist is also very interesting. the video game aesthetic works. 6.8/10
  17. it is definitely aesthetically more accomplished than the 1992 film, with well-choreographed fight scenes, and perhaps there are themes of biotechnology and agency bubbling below the surface. best aspect is probably the soundtrack. however, this is also pretty much militaristic video game nonsense, complete with a final showdown between three skynet bosses. pick your player! 3.8/10
  18. i just saw this today on tv, and it's definitely better than [aliens], which i saw yesterday, but the action genre clearly isn't for me. 4.3/10
  19. so far, two of these are in my top 50, one of which is quite obvious and the other which is a leftover relic from my childhood that i have not seen since release.
