  1. Would this apply to all the categories outside of docs/shorts/international films, or just Best Picture? Would a "To Leslie" or "Tell It Like a Woman" survive under these proposed changes? In the article, they say some AMPAS members are pushing for an exclusive theatrical window with that 15-20 theater requirement, along with bans on four-walling and a required marketing spend, but there doesn't appear to broader support for those moves. I think Netflix generally releases their top contenders in at least 15-20 markets already. This development would hurt the old-school model of saving expansion until January nominations, which was already falling off. Unless they grandfather in already-released 2023 movies, the earliest they could implement these changes is for the 97th Oscars.
  2. When you're facing criminal charges and your lawyer is leaking texts to TMZ, it's time to get another lawyer lol. I wonder if we're going to get more details on all the supposed incidents with Majors from the NY theater types and not just "everyone knows" vagueness...
  3. Apparently, it's the same lawyer who represented Jen Shah, the Real Housewife now in prison for fraud, and Paul Haggis in his rape case (he was found liable). Her lawyering style seems to be publicly putting forward a lot of bluster and victim-blaming. Maybe it's the best Majors could do in this circumstance, which really isn't saying much...
  4. Don't tell me these texts are the supposed "written statements" recanting the abuse... Majors was better off saying nothing, really, and he's being represented by an incompetent or absolute clown. It's such a shame, and they have a child, so she will have to deal with him even if she leaves.
  5. Maybe don't suck at your job or try doing a coup on your boss...
  6. I was pretty shocked to hear Kermode reviewing it-I figured 80 For Brady would skip the UK, but maybe they hoped interest in the stars would help. Or, I thought they would retitle it internationally to something more generic like "Golden Girls Trip" and try to downplay the football elements in the trailers.
  7. Very strong statement from his lawyer, though the victim recanting doesn’t always mean much. However, video is a different story. I wonder if the tape will be released? Also, it might be a good time for the "everyone knew" folks to provide some details about Majors, if they have any. There's lots of "everybody knows" gossip about other stars (some about predatory behavior, some not), and not all of it is true.
  8. Would the Pugh fans want to support the movie directed by Zach Braff? Their split was very amicable and she's had nothing but great things to say about him during the PR tour. She's personally done more to promote A Good Person vs Don't Worry Darling (lol), though the latter obviously got more overall publicity/hype. Anyway, Florence fans really hated her dating Braff and might see going to their movie as "supporting grooming" or whatever (they met when she was in her twenties but online Gen Z is super hung up on "age appropriate" couples). I don't disagree that Pugh may just have a big online following who'll post fancams all day but won't buy tickets just for her. Chalamet seems similar to a degree.
  9. On Reddit, saw his trajectory described as a Star to Tár moment. The incident with Majors reportedly happened inside a taxi. Many of them have interior cameras for driver safety, so there may possibly be footage of the whole thing. His rep sounded confident about "clearing this up" but wasn't there and is just going by what Majors told him. He's in Oppenheimer, not sure how large the role will be. Other projects are in the works, including a movie under that new Matt and Ben production company. Let's not forget Casey's biggest moment in recent years, allegedly throwing out the Ana de Armas cutout after she and Ben split up. He said it wasn't him but lol...
  10. Too bad that Goop is married to Ryan Murphy's producing partner/collaborator as this whole trial would make a great season of Feud. Lol maybe Rian Johnson will set Knives Out 3 at a ski lodge. . His fans will be totally normal about this, I'm sure...
  11. It's like the tabloids/blogs claiming some famous woman is pregnant or a star couple is splitting up. When it happens, claim you called it first and ignore all their "A Baby For Jen!" headlines over the years. OTOH, if a celebrity does have violent tendencies, there are usually people who know before the public finds out. With Ant-Man 3 massively underperforming anyway, Marvel can always claim they were already changing directions even before Majors' legal woes. Someone will make it a race thing if Jonathan gets fired while Ezra's movie didn't get canned (different situations but since when does Twitter care). Also, isn't Magazine Dreams about some violent incel type? So much for the Oscar hopes...
  12. In 2004, if your spokesperson said it was a "misunderstanding" and the charges got dropped, that was all she wrote. AFAIK, Diane Lane hasn't later come forward with abuse claims naming him and after other incidents (bar fight, public intoxication), Brolin claimed to have changed his ways. He's remarried with young children, by 2018 whatever happened with Lane could be written off as ancient history. Renner also had a contentious divorce with allegations flying and he's still in the fandom's good graces. But I don't know if Majors will get the same benefit of the doubt from fams/media, he's much newer to fame, for one (among other differences). I saw people guessing Barry Keoghan or Paul Mescal but Majors falls more under the "thirst tweet" type TBH. And you can't always tell which gossip is true vs someone trying to get attention on Twitter.
  13. And families don't think of Shazam 2 as a family movie because it's PG-13, so (responsible) parents don't want to take younger kids (under 8-ish). The first one had some surprisingly intense sequences compared to the tone of the trailers, of course people would think the sequel was more of the same. Shazam just isn't a series where long gaps between movies will work, everyone can see Asher Angel doesn't look any younger than, say, Tom Holland in his first appearance as Peter/Spidey. The conceit of a kid morphing into a man is gone-what's the point? * Yikes! I hope she heals quickly. His lawyer seems confident, but that doesn't always mean much. Is it like a Michael Irvin situation and there's video of the whole thing showing nothing happened, or...
  14. I was thinking "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret" because it's also Lionsgate and based on a book appealing to young-ish girls, though it's not the best match tonally.
  15. John Wick 4 is rated R and the audience so far is 69 percent male? Maybe they want to pair the Hunger Games spinoff prequel trailer with something slightly younger/more female skewing.
  16. Is this supposed to be an apology? Good thing he didn't watch "You People", I guess... * Anyone else following this? It's like Elle in Legally Blonde, except she never gets to the point. Can picture Taylor getting ready to play Vegas yesterday, wondering why her alerts were blowing up....
  17. The per theater averages for the awards season fall release have plummeted post-pandemic. Compare how the Best Picture nominees did on Oscar weekend 2018 March 2-4, 2018: 11 (12) The Shape of Water Fox Searchlight $1,479,352 +13% 832 +111 $1,778 $57,609,421 14 13 (11) Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Fox Searchlight $1,292,173 -6% 770 +79 $1,678 $52,180,601 17 14 (13) The Post 20th Century… $1,069,501 -14% 671 -124 $1,594 $80,527,737 11 15 (14) Phantom Thread Focus Features $752,545 -24% 715 +64 $1,053 $20,286,709 10 16 (19) Darkest Hour Focus Features $696,160 -7% 913 +118 $762 $55,550,377 15 17 (18) Lady Bird A24 $568,742 -31% 710 +109 $801 $48,321,868 18 And this was in Black Panther at in its third weekend at $66 million... There were also other movies not in Best Picture but boosted by other nominations. Clearly, cinematic universes and "prestige" movies used to coexist just fine. To be fair to this year's contenders, most were available for legal home viewing well before the ceremony. Theaters were often playing the nominees maybe once or twice a day, possibly at reduced prices as well (Avatar 2 excluded). Oscar weekend 2023, Best Picture nominees: 8 (6) Avatar: The Way of Water 20th Century… $2,656,192 -27% 1,675 -625 $1,586 $674,653,377 13 - (-) Everything Everywhere All At Once A24 $347,224 +69% 584 -52 $595 $73,783,426 51 - (-) Women Talking United Artists $186,578 +16% 527 +300 $354 $5,380,338 12 - (-) The Fabelmans Universal $62,875 +25% 567 -24 $111 $17,340,235 18 - (-) TÁR Focus Features $52,590 +18% 185 -259 $284 $6,763,035 23 - (-) Triangle of Sadness Neon $37,710 +11% 514 +104 $73 $4,608,096 23 - (-) The Banshees of Inisherin Searchlight … $32,516 -25% 505 +235 $64 $10,571,354 21 Some of these per theater averages are just dire (especially compared to 5 years ago) and this was Oscar weekend. Except for EEAAO, attendance was only going to get worse for the other nominees after the Oscars. Theaters probably made more on private screenings or some random Fathom Events thing...
  18. It was? But it was like that before the pandemic, especially for the nominees without much momentum after the ceremony. The 90th Oscars were on March 4, and several Best Picture nominees that year stopped reporting numbers by the end of that month. It's all relative: weak Oscar movie box office by the standards of 5 years ago is stronger than what Tár, Banshees, Women Talking, etc. brought in recently, so stuff like Phantom Thread and Call Me By Your Name still lingered in theaters a bit longer after the ceremony vs now. I imagine EEAAO and The Whale would be the only winners this year to get much of a post-ceremony box office bump. Everything else would likely be playing to even emptier auditoriums than before.
  19. Apparently, it's a play with songs, not a musical, and an adaptation of the short story (vs the movie). This is different than the opera in 2014 (who knew?): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brokeback_Mountain_(opera)
  20. Maybe new movies give a bigger concessions boost? All these theaters have formulas for what they keep vs drop. We have an 18-plex here playing EEAAO once at 10 PM today but a whole screen dedicated to A Snowy Day in Oakland this weekend, and I get it considering the audience that goes there. Shazam 2 really isn't a movie that can wait multiple years between sequels, given the concept. I like the idea that the movies should be animated, and then you don't have to worry about so much aging child actors.
  21. A Snowy Day in Oakland seems to have a nice message and I've heard of most of those actors, but it looks so cheap. Not Boogievision* cheap, but still... *In case you missed last year's Unfavorable Odds, directed by the auteur Boogievision. This got released in nearly 450 theaters last September: Stunningly, not a box office hit: Theatrical Performance Domestic Box Office $86,203
  22. I love that Florence is doing more to promote the movie she made with her ex vs. her big WB star vehicle that premiered at Venice last year.
  23. This movie will make up like 40 percent of the US Open's TV ads with Zendaya and the cast showing up to multiple days of play.
  24. Affleck doesn't sound like he would have ever been interested in directing in the Gunn Cinematic Universe, even before this meeting. It wouldn't be the first time Gunn has gone on Twitter and made everything sound hunky-dory in DC world, only for it to turn out a few weeks/months that the two sides were worlds apart and are going their separate ways. I'm not sure why Gunn continues to engage on Twitter; you'd think he'd be way too busy at this stage of his career and would want to ignore the toxicity. I'm sorry, if Netflix could make Don't Look Up for $75M starring Leo and JLaw (both paid very nicely by all reports), plus Meryl, Cate, Jonah Hill, Chalamet, Tyler Perry, et al with multiple public crowd scenes and VFX... A Netflix romcom needing $150M is absurd and IMO less of a streaming/upfront salary issue than a product of Meyers taking half a year to film a studio comedy when most directors get it done in 2-3 months. She did make The Intern with WB, but the budget/production time was far lower than normal for her. Also, will WB want to release a movie called "Paris Paramount"? At least Netflix and Paramount had some sort of deal for a time (Paramount cast-offs getting moved there in the pre-Paramount+ days).
