But that wasn't trying to capitalize on a hugely successful movie that was celebrated by women for being empowering lol

JL was filmed long before WW came out and Snyder/Whedon subjected Diana and the Amazons to the male gaze in a very pre-#Time'sUp way. One can never know whether or not the tone-deaf Snyder would have changed anything about Diana's portrayal in JL in light of the reaction to her solo film, however. He considered Sucker Punch to be his feminist manifesto, after all.

All 17 MCU movies before BP never had relevant roles for black women ether, with the exception of the one black actress painted green in the GOTG movies.

This is true but Feige is correcting that like mad now. He told Vulture (or was it Variety?) that he expects DeWanda Wise to become a fan favorite after she appears in Captain Marvel. She is probably playing Monica Rambeau, who was the first female Captain Marvel in the comics. Monica/Spectrum is arguably the most powerful heroine and one of the most powerful Avengers, period. She's definitely Marvel's fastest hero since she can travel at the speed of light, among other things. I can't wait to see what they do with her.

I guess it’s too late now to give Ryan Coogler Star Wars IX.

They should consider giving some movies though. He can’t be worse than J.J. Abrams or even Rian Johnson.

Kennedy would hire him because of his vision and then fire him because his vision didn't match hers. Why would Coogler subject himself to that nonsense?

Angela Bassett actually has a pretty good role in Black Panther. I'm all here for her making a comeback between 9-1-1 and now appearing in this monster success.

Angela and Viola should both play Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad 2. I wanna see them play Bad Cop/Worse Cop, tossing wigs and cutting bitches with their stiletto heels like Okoye and Nakia.

So BP might take the 2018 DOM crown. :hahaha:

Nostradamus couldn't see that one coming.

    :hahaha:

Every year has its surprising success stories. BP appears to be the first for 2018, though I think that many people knew it would do very well. Just not this well.

I've been a fan since I read T'Challa's very first appearance way back in 1966. His current surge of popularity was a long time coming and is all the more precious for that.

  6. The numbers don't surprise me one bit. The theater I went to gave BP most of its 16 screens and scheduled 27+ shows. All of them were more than 90% sold, with only the worst seats left. My show let out at 10:40 and the lobby was even more crowded than it had been at 7:45. The place was packed the way it was for AOU and IM3. I'm not making a prediction of similar numbers, but I won't be shocked if that happens.

I don't think that there really is such a thing as a coherent group of online Star Wars fanatics. The fanbase is way too large, even the obviously much smaller hardcore base, for it to be clearly defined group.

Even when just talking about general groups, which doesn't take individual opinions into account, you have the purists ("everything but the OT sucks!"), the legacy fans ("the old EU was soo much better than this new stuff!"), the ones who hate the prequels but like the new ones ("practical effects, not this CGI stuff!"), and the ones who like all movies to varying degrees. None of them are clearly dominating the fanbase, at least not when it comes to the noise they make online.

I was referring to the people who wanted everything to go according to their own expectations or theories. There seem to be a sizable number of fans who are enraged because they are convinced that they know, absolutely, how Luke would behave in any situation and he didn't act that way in TLJ. And then there are others who came up with wild theories about certain things that proved not to be true, which set them off. I won't even get into the strange shippers and their fantasies.

When so many people passionately believe in their own inner Star Wars narrative, they will never accept the story as it evolves on screen. Someone like myself, who could be considered a casual fan in comparison, views the movie as the continuation of a dynamic creation that will go on for decades. While I disagree with some developments I'm not inclined to try to write the story in advance of each film's release. There is more joy in being open to the possibilities ahead than in trying to force the narrative to conform to our expectations.

Well someone asked some fans who went to see it on opening night and they liked it.

    Shock horror.

I loved TLJ myself. But even though I'm a day-one fan, I don't think that the current lot of online Star Wars fanatics would count me among their number.

  9. I was surprised to see the notice as soon as I logged in. I took a few weeks' break from this forum precisely because the omnipresent nastiness became depressing. Once it started detracting from the fun of following box office and movie news I bailed. It's better to get pure numbers from the trades and BOM than to wade through endless snark.

it will be interesting to see how this experiment in positivity/less negativity works.
