I hate Illumination and love Pixar but I am glad to see this Minions do well. Animation needed a win at the box office, and if it takes the annoying Twinkies to do it, that’s fine by me. (also even as a Pixar fan, lightyear absolutely sucked so I’m pretty pleased with it underperforming anyway. Go minions!)

Anecdotal evidence, but I saw it with my summer camp and literally everyone, kids and counselors, were confused why the green aliens from toy story weren’t in it. Even as what it’s meant to be, a movie that would’ve made Andy wanna go out and buy a buzz toy, it fails because it really lacks any level of fun factor

as probably the biggest pixar loonie on the forum (who also didn't like Lightyear), the tim allen talking about on Lightyear is so bizarre. Tim Allen was recast in 2000 as the REAL Buzz Lightyear fanboys would KNOW where's the complaining about patrick warburton being the original man, not the toy smh

Saw Top Gun today for a second time, but this time with my dad. Great Father's Day outing; ending got me more choked up this time but yes this is definitely true. We went to a 1:55pm show at my parents' Cinemark and it was completely sold out by 1:20 with the next showtime not until like 3 lol. Small-ass auditorium too (although thankfully with a great sound system still).

CAYOM - New Franchise Rights Thread
Blankments replied to Alpha's topic in Create A Year Of Movies (CAYOM)
can't believe i forgot this three days ago... I WANT THE RIGHTS TO CARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
I mean, hypothetically if I’m in charge of Disney I release turning red and Luca exactly where they were supposed to anyway in theaters. My post is about the bullshit reasoning given that TR was sent to streaming because of omicron but sure in my covid fearing Chapek idiocy hypothetical world we move TR to summer and Lightyear to the end of September slot just because TR’s marketing campaign was in full swing at the time of the move
-
Said it earlier in the thread but if the covid concerns were legit (they definitely weren’t), they should’ve moved Turning Red to this date. With the reviews and WOM it got, it would’ve certainly at least matched the weekend of lightyear in box office while definitely getting much longer legs the known ip of lightyear is a negative; not a positive when it comes to Pixar movies appealing broader than just kids
-
genuinely think the turning red decision helped kill lightyear even worse. Like if Luca was the last one, that’d be a full year ago, still before Black Widow, Shang-Chi, Jungle Cruise even space jam 2, it wouldn’t be nearly as rough. The devaluation of Pixar was refreshened with that for sure idk I’m stuck on the el sorry this is rambly

Was talking to a six-year-old at work today who was talking about how he loves seeing movies with his dad (specifically BAD GUYS), and when I asked him if he was gonna see the buzz lightyear movie with his dad, he said he thought it was supposed to be on Disney+ like the other Pixar movies anecdotal of course, but kids are smarter than we give them credit and this was the first time I was like “huh maybe the doomsayers are right” 😬

Turning Red would’ve made more money on this weekend than Lightyear; an original Pixar movie with those reviews would inherently appeal more to people without families AND to discerning family audiences. It also would target more obviously underserved demos this summer than Lightyear, a movie about a superhero with a flaw of being too much of a maverick, does. classic Chapek

We may have had our differences a few times, but grim has always been a mod who can handle the tough stuff and if he hadn't been around the weekend threads the first few years I joined, this place would've been a very different place. Thanks for all you've done @grim22, and I hope you enjoy more time with your family
