"Night Train to Lisbon" managed to stay #8 despite 3 openers in front ... super drop! But overall a rather weak weekend. Let's hope business picks up with scholl holidays starting Friday. There's a lot of openers again, so the chart will look a lot different for next weekend: French productions "De l'autre côté du périph" (buddy-cop-thriller witch Intouchables-star Omar Sy) and "Un plan parfait" (rom-com with Diane Kruger and Dany Boon); Dreamworks' "The Croods"; German girl/horse-bestseller adaption "Ostwind" (should do a bit better than Rubinrot); and finally "Spring Breakers", plus some limited releases.
  2. The portrayal of grown-up men in "Hangover" and "Hangover 2" is such an affront that I'm forced to take legal action against the release of "Hangover 3".
  3. Frankly, I don't understand why this got those screens in the first place. It's neither 3D nor is the cinematography better than an ambitious TV production ... of course, it's distributed by Constantin who have more influence here in Austria than is healthy for the industry.
  4. Japan could add some nice numbers ... "Brothers Grimm" made 9mil US$, "Van Helsing" 24mil - I would expect H&G to fly somewhere down the middle, say 15mil. In Italy, say about 5 or 6 mil - again, hard to beat Van Helsing (9mil)
  5. What an absolute disaster for Rubinrot in Austria ... and that with the biggest screens in many theaters up to the evening shows!
  6. Congratulations to 200 - one of very few milestones this film's going to tick off
  7. Back in its day, that was an event movie. By now, the buddy-cop-comedy/thriller is a tired genre, and it wasn't new in '84 when it came out, but this film walks the fine line between comedy, thriller and action with quick steps and never overstays its welcome. The AxelFoley/Rosewood/Taggart triangle works perfectly, it's full of wit and really funny gags, and Eddie Murphy has perfect timing. Plus, it's got a slimy asshole as the main villain with some character faces as his suits, it's got a soundtrack that maybe doesn't stand the test of time but gives a little extra drive and basically does its job, and some fun stabs at Beverly Hills and LA. The only weak point afaik was the girl (Lisa Eilbacher, had to look her up) who never stands a chance against the hard-acting men here, she was just some eye-candy. But since her role was small anyway and there's no romantic interest in this film (if you don't consider the Foley/Rosewood banter) that doesn't hurt much. So, A from me!
  8. B from me This is obviously a mess, but an entertaining mess - maybe I'm jaded by the supertight Hansel&Gretel which I saw a few days before, but there's a lot of fat that could be trimmed here (the origin story for a start has to go, absolutely stops the film dead in its track). Plus most of the actors are really bad at comedy - even the Russel-Crowe-lookalike they cast as Jack Knife, he hasn't got a single funny bone in his burly body, why, they could have cast Crowe himself and it couldn't have been worse. And some are not only bad at comedy, but bad overall, like RZA or Bautista. Plus the soundtrack is - ok, it's not as grating as Ladyhawke's but they're playing in the same league. And the storyline is convoluted, with too many protagonists and factions. As is the screen sometimes, those split-screen scenes don't really work. Now, what's to like here? - Some really nice and original fight choreographies (for instance the widows binding BrassBody) - Gorgeous sets, bright colors, fun costumes! - Silly weapons galore - Girls, girls, girls, about 50 of them, as pretty as they come and scantily-clad too! - Byron Mann, playing "Silver Lion". Didn't know him at all but he moves through his scenes with wit and elegance like a chinese Christoph Waltz - he got the comedy timing everyone else here is seriously lacking. Every scene he's in is saved by his presence. - Lucy Liu - she's also able to save her scenes. Between them, they save about half the movie! - btw, this film was snubbed at the Oscars this year; it should have been the frontrunner for best hairstyling. Shame. Conclusion: an enjoyable mess, consisting mainly of cool scenes loosely connected by a sketchy and convoluted storyline with not very likeable characters. Very much like "Kill Bill" btw, only it's much shorter and therefore more entertaining. Recommended for viewing under the influence.
  9. Saturday trend for Germany - seems the race for #2 will not be that close: 1: Oz: 200k admissions (good hold, -27%) 2: H&G: 160k (ok hold, -34%) 3: Rubinrot: 125k (rather disapponting for a young-adult-bestseller) 4: This is 40: 90k 5: Night Train to Lisabon: 75k (super hold, -13%) 70k admissions for Kokowääh2 and JackTGS (ugh) Weak numbers all around (with the exception of H&G) and a really bad weekend overall; still let's not despair, Germany's January and February were top and should more than balance the weak March.
  10. Yep, ticket prices are reallyout of control sometimes ... Yep, we watched it, see Crowd Reports and Review thread.
  11. Yep, 1mil admissions total should be doable with this hold and holidays on the horizon. Still nothing to write home about, but better than it looked last week. As I said, with family films, it's all about the legs.
  12. Germany Friday trend: Oz 200k, Rubinrot and H&G about 150k each for the weekend. Slo, Oz with a decent drop, might profit from holidays starting next weekend.
  13. At my theater, according to presales, Rubinrot opens better than Jack but not by much. Oz is leading in presales, #2 yet unclear with H&G, Rubinrot and some adult fare about head-to.head, but family films usually have little presales anyway. Keep in mind that "Rubinrot" is a German production and while we in Austria share much with our northern neighbours (including the language, kind of), german films usually do a lot better in Germany, and Austrian films in Austria. See recent examples Kokowääh2, Schlussmacher ...
  14. Opening night for "Jack the Giant Slayer" - somewhere between underwhelming amd piss-poor, even worse than I expected. Ok, it's only Thursday, so maybe it can pick up some speed during the weekend but I don't think so.
  15. Weeeell, there's a bit of a difference. I mean, I can fully understand Brando feeling out-of-place in Superman (or Laurence Olivier in Star Wars), but Apocalypse Now is a different kind of film than either Superman or Star Wars. With shooting conditions the way they were, it takes a real asshole to see itself as the most important part of the team. (btw, while I can understand them, I still think it's very unprofessional behaviour poking fun at the people who pay you - if they found those roles that much below their dignity then why take them in the first place?!)
  16. yep ty, edited it! I don't know Taxi but for me he's always Doc Brown. btw, he made a truly menacing villain, but was this the only role where he played a baddie? Usually he seems to get cast as a kind of crazy, but lovable guy.
  17. It's a monster of a film. The pacing is uneven but many of the scenes are truly unforgettable. The scale of outdoor shooting was a feat nearly unparalleled in film history. And once Willard reaches the temple, the film reaches at the same time a brutal intensity and nearly drug-like dream quality.
  18. It's 9 minutes longer but don't ask me which scenes got added/expanded.
  19. I had my suspicions but still saw this on the big screen - and while it delivers some beautiful images and a nice touch of bitterness, ultimately it fails as a feature; it's simply much too long. Still, the opening sequence is 10 minutes of pure childhood adrenaline/angst, and some of the sets and masks are really good, so I'd recommend it for "sampling" (= watch it with the fast-forward button firmly under your thumb).
  20. Solid A, one of the most enjoyable films ever! Especially if you're into toons like me ... The pace is breathtaking and it's so full of background jokes, sight gags and wordplay that you have to watch it multiple times. Plus, Bob Hoskins manages to stand his ground against nearly everything the animators throw at him. And Christopher Lloyd makes a memorable villain. This must have been a director's nightmare but Zemeckis did it brillantly - the guy made some truly inspired films! Just to get am idea how good HFRR really is, go and watch "Cool World", which tried about the same concept 4 years later and was a boring mess despite more starpower.
  21. Well, it's up to you Krauts ... no show here in Austria, sadly. The nearest shows for me would be in Munich ... and that's only one show on Sunday! http://www.kino.de/kinofilm/ziemlich-beste-freunde/imkino/138335
  22. Obviously profiting from school shows, Intouchables is reaching out for the 9 million admission mark in Germany (which would be the 3rd "Golden Screen" awarded for 3mil adm.); this weekend it has overtaken Star Wars ep.1 and ranks #19 on Germany's all-time chart (since 1968).
  23. Bond Nr. 3, and the first where everything is finally and securely in place with Desmond LLewelyn as Q. Gert Fröbe as the titular villain is one of the most memorable characters among Bond badboys. And Honor Blackman as the Bond Girl with the most memorable name
