The PTA number is just the number of admissions divided by the number of theaters it's playing in and as such is a very unspecific number; sadly we don't get per-screen or even per-show numbers. But when you take in the genre / format, it can be interpreted in a sensible way. As an example, last week's Wish had a PTA of 320 - but as a family release it was playing during the day and even a lot of shows in the evening, often on more than one screen. So this PTA is actually pretty poor for an OW (ok, a lot of pressure has been taken out by already wide previews the WE before). Otoh, Renaissance had a PTA of "only" 166 but it was only playing in the evening and mostly on smaller screens; in some theaters only one show / day. So those 166 are a good number, and the per-show-admissions must have been a lot higher than Wish's.

Wish opened softer than expected after the strong previews, but Saw 10 had a good OW and Renaissance also a good PTA. In Austria, similar numbers but everything a bit higher, we had 4 releases in the 5-digit range for the 3-day-WE, plus a domestic dramedy on #5. Next weekend: Wonka will probably be the biggest opener; the book is not that well-known in Germany but the 2005 Burton movie topped >1mil admissions so I'd say it has a decent chance to become #1 over the weekend. Also opening: Domestic dramedy Das Beste kommt noch (remake of a french one) which will probably not make a big splash.

as far as I've seen it's a pretty limited release in Germany, so no big numbers but we should get some. I don't know if it's already playing in Austria, at least in my city it has no screens.

update: lower estimates for everything, heavy snowfalls seem to put a brake on the BO this weekend

First weekend estimates for Germany from insidekino.de: #1: Wish - 360k (that's lower than I expected, last week's previews must have taken a lot of pressure out) #2/3: Napoleon, HungerGamesPrequel - 175k each #4: Saw 10 - 140k (very good) so, on the positive side, 4 releases in the 6-digits-range. Otherwise it's looking sad, #5 atm would be Marvels with <30k admissions, that's awful.

Otoh, all holdovers had pretty steep drops (from already low levels), so overall, the weekend was still somewhat disappointing. In Austria, similar results (once more, Pumuckl much stronger, might get to 100k total), plus strong results for the Lord of the Rings triple-features which sold about 3.500 tickets (=10.500 admissions). At the theaters where it played, it was easily the biggest seller this WE (at mine, it occupied the whole Saturday on 3 of the 9 screens, among them the biggest, which were about 80% full) Next weekend: After this weeks super previews, there's no doubt Wish will have a strong real opening - anything below 400k would disappoint me. Also opening: SawX, with little competition in its demo, it might come near a 6-digit OW, too. So, overall a much better weekend!

would probably have been #3 this weekend, maybe even approaching 6-digits which would be an outstanding number. cinemas are in dire need of a hit ...

Doesn't look like it ... as I mentioned, presales are good but the number of shows is low which is limiting the OW numbers ... if the movie is really good, WOM should carry it into the christmas holidays when the long running time is less of an issue. And it's possible that it gets school shows which will of course push midweek admissions.

If it's spectacular enough, one million total should be possible (hey, a pretty dry Oppenheimer biopic just counted >4mil admissions this year, so Napoleon should be a blockbuster, but that's not how the BO works …)

Next weekend: Hopefully, a stronger weekend with the new Hunger Games movie - I don't know if anybody has been waiting for this prequel but presales look better than for The Marvels, it should hit 300-350k OW.

well , OD for Marvels and the 200k OW seems like a wet dream ... in fact, if this manages a 6-digit-OW at all it would surprise me. The time when every new MCU movie was bound to be at least a mid-sized hit are definitely over, this is deep within flop territory.

Five Night at Freddy's is fading fast but since it did this weekend what I expected from the OW, it's already a success! Family stuff held strong; there were even some increases. In Austria, the weekend was much better, with 4 family releases leading (Pumuckl doing better here than in its home market!); domestic Pulled Pork came once more close to the 10k mark - nice! Next weekend: Hopefully, a bit more business, with The Marvels as the obvious favourite - but the MCU has been on a bit of a decline so don't expect wonders (presales lackluster, too). Everything above a 200k OW would be nice at this point, 300k a roaring success. Also opening: Atatürk 1881 - 1919 - Turkish movies often have impressive PTAs; while I don't know if the secular Atatürk is still popular in today's islam-oriented Turkey, this movie should still attract quite a crowd at least on OW.

Next weekend: Domestic dramedy/romcom One for the Road, horror comedy Five Nights at Freddies, and - as if we didn't already have enough - one more domestic kiddie movie, Die unlangweiligste Schule der Welt. No, no hits in sight (to say nothing of a blockbuster), so one more mediocre weekend coming up … with fall holidays in many regions, maybe some stronger weekdays.

(In contrast, Wochenendrebellen doesn't work here) Next weekend: Some attractiv new releases (though once more no big hits) - #1 will probably go to Killers of the Flower Moon, and for the kids, the 3rd Trolls movie will try to find a spot among the strong holdovers. Domestic comedy Ein Fest fürs Leben (remake of a french one) might also attract some business though a 6-digit-OW seems nearly impossible; it will be more interesting how much of an impact it will have on domestic competition Wochenendrebellen.

The Exorcist was underperforming, not even able to beat the 3rd weekend of Nun 2. Oppenheimer has crossed 4mil total, wow. Domestic adaption Wochenendrebellen is having good legs as expectet of such a movie, 1mil total not impossible. In Austria, similar numbers with family stuff leading the charts; plus domestic crime comedy Pulled Pork on #2 with a nice OW (while Wochenendrebellen is doing much worse than in ist home market). Rehragout Rendezvous has crossed 300k admissions total (like its predesessor), a Golden Ticket - congratulations! Next weekend: Weather still pretty sunny (Sunday might become rainier) so no help there; but there are two big openers - the Taylor Swift Eras Tour movie is only opening on Friday but it should win the weekend with ease, presales looking very good. And a new adaption of a classical Germany's children's / YA book, Das fliegende Klassenzimmer - might also be good for a six-digit-OW though presales are looking lackluster.

early weekend estimates from insidekino.de: #1: PawPatrol 2 - 150k admissions (-27%) #2: Checker Tobi 2 - 160k (incl a lot of previews) #3: Nun 2 - 115k (-32%, good with Exorcist opening) #4: Wochenendrebellen - 105k (was bound to be leggy but flat would be awesome) #5: Exorcist - around 100k OW, struggling a bit #6: Creator - 90k (-15%, cool if true) while it's unclear how ranking order will play out between #2-#5, overall it's an ok weekend without a blockbuster but with a wide selection of attractive releases.
