Nolan is the only one who seems to be pushing the agenda of being the “saviour of cinema”. Russell Crowe and the people behind Unhinged haven’t been coming over all sanctimonious as if they’re saving theatres by releasing their film. That’s the difference.

I’ve got to admit, as a fan of Nolan’s movies, this whole pushing for theatres to open before it’s safe to do so has put me off him slightly. It’s arrogant and very tone deaf to the situation we’re currently in.

And also, the entire industry including other studios and theatre owners have been keeping an eye on Tenet and making their plans based on it almost entirely. There’s a reason Unhinged moved when Tenet did from July to Aug.

According to two insiders, with foreign ticket sales expected to account for two-thirds of Tenet’s overall gross, Nolan and Warner executives discussed releasing the film internationally ahead of the North American rollout, a relatively risky strategy in an era of rampant overseas movie piracy, when most major motion pictures arrive in theaters worldwide on the same date. But according to these sources, the filmmaker — who, as one of filmdom’s chief evangelists for the theatrical moviegoing experience, penned an op-ed in the Washington Post calling the collective cultural experience of seeing a film in a theater a “vital part of social life” — wanted to help support American theaters in their time of need by sticking to the original plan.

as a viewer, I’d be delighted. But after the days of discussion about how much international cinemas that are open now are arguably hurting even more by not getting access to new content, Nolan (himself a Brit) reportedly picking that decision (also Regal is UK owned! is…  😬

  3. According to the author (on Twitter), the article's guesstimate is based on a (imo way overinflated) global P&A of 200m, plus interest on the production loan, which is an interesting point.

Yeah more realistically we're looking at closer to 600m I think. And yeah that's to break even just theatrically. Surely with COVID that goal post for blockbusters is gone now, they'll have to rely way more on all those other ancillary revenues.

If someone can fill me in on the details as to why gyms are open but cinemas are not (in California), it'd be duly appreciated. I'm not being snide at people who wish to keep themselves healthy. It's a necessity at this point. However, I'm genuinely interested in the logistics and health risks involved. Does it have to do with the ventilation system of theaters?

I'm glad Nolan and WB are being stubborn about having a proper theatrical release. I hope they don't buckle under pressure.

Are gyms open? Jeez, that's weird...even here in the UK there aren't plans to reopen them until like October.

But anyway you're using the argument NATO has in that NJ lawsuit and come on, going 'but look at this industry' when there's a pandemic still going on is dumb, sorry

There are reports from European countries that after initial customer flurries from shops reopening, retail footfall is about 50% of what it was the same time last year. The fear is still real, even in countries doing far better than the US. I've long held that WB were mad to even entertain the idea of not getting Tenet the hell out of summer and nothing has yet to change my mind on that.

If their (unlikely) goal is to take a hit for the industry to get people into cinema-going again then fine, I guess, but I think they'll still be disappointed.

WB Italy announced today they've moved Tenet from September 18 to August 2. Films, even blockbusters, in Italy usually avoid the summer...

They're definitely doing this for the cinema chains rather than their own interest...

Point is it's might be neither Nolan or WB's call; it will probably be the local health officials call.

I doubt we will go back to a total stay at home. lockdown;but keeping the mass gathering venues closed is a real possibility.

Surprised that after the last few months people still do not get this.

That's certainly what Nolan's likely justifying this with, if health officials say it's safe why shouldn't he open his film?

“In recent weeks, Warner, concerned about its “Tenet” investment, was leaning in favor of postponement, while Mr. Nolan, a fervent advocate for preserving the moviegoing experience, was more eager to press ahead. The discussions amounted to a fraught moment for Warner: Mr. Nolan is a proven moneymaker, and the studio wants to keep him happy.”

There’s been continual buzz back and forth as to whether Tenet will stick to its July 17 release date. We’ll know in the next week or two whether it needs to move by two weeks, and much of that has to do with the rest of the world’s 30K screens being open. I’ve heard that there is a distribution plan for Tenet that if New York hasn’t reopened, but most of the world has, the John David Washington time-travel thriller still would open. I also hear Warner Bros. had a marketing plan in place for Tenet, fired up and ready to go.
