  1. Figured this would happen given how long they've been 'negotiating' this instead of going back to normal after a week and Aron's comments on this being a money issue. Few things to note:

    1. I have to wonder about international ramifications too. "In the coming weeks, the two companies will begin discussions surrounding international distribution agreements in the countries in Europe and the Middle East” UK theatrical window is longer than most - *16 weeks*...

    2. Also worth noting that 17 days/three weeks is *not* a coincidence. The major studios have already been testing that for 7 years in South Korea with Super Premium VOD.

    - Oh and all on eyes what happens with Bond. Between this (though MGM retains digital but they're doing Bill and Ted day& date) and of course even more pressure from international cinemas following the Tenet announcement, I bet it's gonna stay November now instead of moving to 2021. PVOD by end of the year, first major tentpole to do so?

Perhaps I'm projecting - no pun intended - but I'm really not seeing a big demand here in the UK for cinemas to reopen (other than from cinemas themselves) . It's just not something anyone I know talks about. Any movie releasing this year is taking a massive financial bath and its basically an act of charity.

    and Robbie Collin lol

So that “unprecedented release strategy” involves opening it...one week later than international? Wow, WB, bravo on the bravery of doing something that Marvel have been doing for years.

This is just hilarious at this stage.

in all fairness I'm guessing opening it only in countries/cities/states that are all clear on those dates and then rolling it out as regions reopen might have been that but let's see

  4. I have strong doubts it will make Sep 4 if it didn't make August 12. WB is just asking for more bad press with that date instead of pushing it way out.
Will be curious to see with what they accompany the official announcement which I presume is tomorrow - remember that reports are that it could just open on that date whenever is open and other regions and cities join in when they're clear...however at least John Stankey isn't keen on that idea

Still don't think WB will go for a staggered release. I expect they'll soon admit defeat and copy Disney.

as industry-risking that may be for international (there is really a narrative coming out of *UK* film Twitter now that we should go out and risk it to make sure cinemas stay afloat) I as a viewer would just love this to move out to 21

No studio is gonna think about launching a movie on a streaming service that's not available in most countries.

For what it's worth, WB is giving An American Pickle a traditional theatrical release over here! At this point if any WB film goes to HBO Max it's probably gonna be US only and other territories pick and choose...

Didn't HBO Max flop? Would make no sense to send Tenet there.

A film like that on the service would be a huge subscriber boost...but no way would happen because Nolan of course. Just saying, Stankey seems like the sort of exec that's just frustrated about being beholden to some pesky cinemas, it's not a coincidence yesterday's earnings call was all HBO Max, HBO Max, HBO Max. A lot of these conglomerates (especially WB because AT&T) are about direct to consumer and controlling it all end to end from the internet provider to the platform, and the theatrical ecosystem and the budgets of films like Tenet (and filmmakers like Nolan evangelising the traditional not just experience but distribution infrastructure and industry) stand in the way

They're gonna do what Netflix did with The Cloverfield Paradox, except in cinemas...

For non-US countries, they'll play ads before, during and at the end of the Champions League Final on the 23rd of August, saying it's opening that night (opening Monday at 00:01 is "unconventional")

I think for markets and cities that aren't open - including US states - they go all in with 'cinema is back with Tenet' messaging, promoting cinema reopenings. Apparently though domestically they will be cutting down on national TV and outdoor.

  9. Studio insiders said the espionage epic will go out first overseas, where cinemas have reopened in many European and Asian countries, and have begun to reopen in China. Tenet hopes to arrive in the U.S. in the first part of September, even if only in select cities. Sources stress the situation is fluid, however.

Fake af. The intertitles have a different font from the usual Disney+ tv spots and there's no MPAA rating at the end. Compare that to this Artemis Fowl tv spot:

Aside from the new footage/tweaked dialogue point above, it does have an Australian M rating tag bottom left. it's not a domestic spot.

  11. From the Washington Post report:

The decision came about as the studio, parent AT&T and others involved with the release jostled over the best course of action. Nolan, his wife and producing partner Emma Nolan, and the WB distribution team have been pushing to release the movie now to bring entertainment to consumers and at least some revenue to the studio and theaters.

But Emmerich and executives at AT&T, looking at the numbers, have been worried that their investment, which runs to $200 million in production costs and perhaps nearly as much in marketing totals, will return a minimal figure in a corona-pocked world.

So the way that has been evolving has been interesting, at first the trades were painting it as Nolan vs WB, Nolan's PR has been trying to push that him and WB are on the same page, and now it's Nolan *and* WB vs the head honcho and AT&T.
