The expectation of anyone with common sense who knew it's the crown jewel of Disney's library, who knew it was the 2nd highest grossing film ever after JP when released, who knew it only added to its appeal over the years (its 2012 re-release gross doubled JP's 2013 re-release) via its record breaking stage musical. It's an underperformance any way you slice it. Pulling less in its second weekend than BATB is actually embarrassing.

I didn't care for this movie but it's nice to see it do well. And good for Lily James who is better than the overrated Americans JLaw and Emma Stone. Is there anti-Brit actor bias? How ‘Yesterday’ became a summer counter-programming hit in the US https://www.screendaily.com/news/how-yesterday-became-a-summer-counter-programming-hit-in-the-us/5141508.article

Instead of lame remakes I wish more classic movies got theatrical re-releases. I realize it's expensive P&A wise so it's prob not worth it unless you have an undeniable title. Speaking of which I feel like people forget how well THE EXORCIST re-release did in 2000. Those PTAs 😮 2000 Date (click to view chart) Rank Weekend Gross % Change Theaters Change / Avg. I'm looking at the top 10 and it's truly HORRIFYING. The only studio movie worth rooting for stars an alligator. That's how dire things are: the freshest, most exciting major studio release of the Summer is an alligator in the basement movie. Decades from now this will be seen and analyzed as such a dark time in film history.

Disappointing #s for TLK. This was a strong contender for biggest opening weekend of all time. I blame the National Geographic lions creepily singing with no facial expressions. I also blame poor casting choices like Beyonce who lacks the talent to be anything but Beyonce. People want to hear their beloved Nala, not some tacky popstar.
