  1. Fucking stoked for this. My phone battery is shit enough already and having to check in everywhere can take its toll if I'm out and about. Public phone charging stations should be considered necessary infrastructure imo, considering how important phones are in modern life, and especially since they have our vax status on them now.
  2. Does anyone wear a mask during the actual movie though? I certainly don't, as soon as I sit down the mask is off and I'm having my popcorn and coke. And even when I'm done with my food, the mask stays off.
  3. So it looks like Matrix is not getting previews, it's starting just from Boxing Day. It's a bit disappointing since I won't be in Sydney for the Christmas/New Year period and I was hoping to catch it on a really big screen.
  4. Well, still the biggest Denis opening yet Prisoners 1.09m Sicario 1.68m Arrival 2.17m BR2049 4.53m Dune 4.83m It's also one of the top 10 OW this year. A weak year to be sure, but I don't think 4.8m is all that bad. The problem will be legs more than anything, it has only two weeks to make as much as possible before Spider-Man opens, then we get the Boxing Day rush the week after that.
  5. Dune opens to 4.84m, overall weekend numbers 12.2m slightly up on the same weekend in 2019. We should see solid drops next weekend, before Spider-Man opens and dominates.
  6. AEG consistently had big drops despite having effectively no competition, -60%, -60%, -44%, -50%, -48%. Only on its seventh weekend did it have a sub 40% drop but by then it made only 500k. TLK’19 seventh weekend it made 1.1m.
  7. I went to see Dune at the Onyx Screen in Entertainment Quarter (Fox Studios). I was a bit worried about eyestrain, but I needn't've been. It was actually pretty cool, especially when there's nothing onscreen, because it goes *dark*, like pitch black. You don't realise how much light there actually is with a projector until it's not there. The movie was great too but I didn't realise it was part one. Fair enough I guess though, there was a lot of story being told and to have condensed the whole book into one movie it would've just felt too rushed. Great effects and cinematography too, surely deserves nominations for both.
  8. With the most recent update, a few milestones have been reached in 2021, firstly James Bond takes the lead, which he might keep for the rest of the year. And with a gross 408.4m the top 50 has now overtaken 2020's *entire* gross of 401.2m. I'd estimate the overall yearly gross to be about 500m. Not that it was ever really in doubt, I think 2021 overtook sometime in October, but it's still nice to know for sure. It's still a far cry from pre-pandemic times though, we averaged a bit over 1.2b each year from 2015-2019.
  9. I was in the city on Saturday, and if the number of people shopping and milling about and being pretty lax with masking rules is any indication, then I reckon everyone is pretty over restrictions and are ready to get to living like they were. A lockdown would be a much harder sell now then back in June.
  10. I sincerely hope there aren't. Nothing about Omicron is showing itself to be worse then Delta, we're super vaccinated, antivirals are coming online etc... Governments, especially state govts are super cautious though. NSW should be OK, but Vic and WA in particular have been pretty trigger happy, and Qld are a bit up in the air as they have the lowest vax rate.
  11. Total gross +21%, but that doesn't include weekdays. Although the blockbusters have been doing well, it's still pretty top heavy, the number 10 movie was less every single time. vs vs vs vs
  12. No midnights at Burwood, C-Town, Ed Square, Livo or Miranda yet (ever?), but it is getting midnights at Blacktown and Wetherill Park Hoyts. Wonder what that's about. Back in 2015-17, SW got multiple midnights at suburban locations, and it was selling them out.
  13. Fair enough. You can check seats per screen for Event here, you’d still have to work out by subtracting though. https://exclusives.eventcinemas.com.au/venues/
  14. Total weekend was just shy of 13m, down in the equivalent weekend in 2019, but that had two big movies opening (Frozen 2 and Knives Out). But then nothing big opened again until Star Wars whereas this year we have Dune still to go before Spider-Man, and stronger holdovers. I wouldn’t say the box office is totally back yet, but we’re on a good run at the moment.
  15. You keep checking just Hoyts, but I promise Event Cinemas is easier to check, just gotta mouse over the session! Village Cinemas is pretty obnoxious, it’s a two click process and I don’t usually bother checking them. But they have loads of screens in Victoria.
  16. OK, it might be an America thing, because they both made double what Raya did in Australia. Even lesser movies like Space Jam 2 and Tom and Jerry made more than Raya here. And of course Luca and Soul weren't released theatrically here either. I hope it was worth the D+ subs, because otherwise they were leaving money on the table.
  17. Depends on the movie though, Disney hasn't had much luck with theatrical kids releases but The Croods 2 and Peter Rabbit 2 did very well. I reckon Soul would've done better than Raya.
  18. More Dine and Discover vouchers coming! It would be interesting to know if it had any effect on the box office in NSW. I used both my Discovers at the cinema.
  19. Think I might do the ole double on Saturday and see A Boy Called Christmas and Titane on the same day. Two movies that should have wildly diverging viewing experiences.
  20. He's been making it for a while, not sure why that's breaking news exactly. It also won't beat Demon Slayer. DS didn't just beat Spirited Away, it gosh darn smashed it.
  21. A good poster wouldn't have gone amiss either, This would have captured my attention straight away if they'd used this. Whereas this is a poster I wouldn't remember after I stopped looking at it.
  22. It's totally possible for movies to fall through the cracks if they aren't advertised correctly. I saw two movies the week before it was released (Shang-Chi and Flashback) and there was no trailer attached to either film, I didn't see any posters for it at the cinema, it had no online presence etc... It just escaped my attention. Maybe it was just a function of lockdown, because usually I'm constantly looking at what's releasing and when cinemas were closed that just depressed me. But even before lockdown I don't remember any trailers or anything for it, whereas literally every film had trailers for Bond and Venom 2.
  23. If it’s comment you’re seeing a lot, then maybe it might be true?
