Corpse thinks it's to do with the audience becoming less accepting of 3D. Apparently Japanese films mostly eschewed 3D and are now going like gangbusters (and have been since the start of the year). Whereas Hollywood films are essentially locking people out because of the over-reliance on 3D.But, the overall trend over the past few years has been an increase in the Japanese share of the box office. The 3D issue must be accelerating the process.
I agree completely. But the question is, why have Hollywood movies been shunned so hard? It's not just a bad year for Hollywood, it's downright terrible.
Well, there were three this year, none last year, none in 2010, two in 2009 and one in 2008. Six in five years. Try two in 2001, and three each in 2002, 2003 and 2004. 11 in four years. This is for movies >50m tickets.
True, but attendance has certainly fallen by the wayside since 2001. Movies just don't regularly sell that many tickets anymore. Of course, hindsight is 20/20.
