If those GW projections hold (basically whether the 3D and singalong gambles really pay off) i will start believing in that kind of development
Until then i think i will still hold onto my conservative $190M... somebody has to stay under $200M for the sake of sanity
Btw i really want those number to become reality! And i think one of the advantages Frozen has over local animation is that multiple versions are available that might encourage repeat business which is usually not really a factor.
This is true, the same thing happened in Korea in fact. People who saw it in 2D went on to see it again in 3D, dubbed, 4dX etc.
Also over here 3D in most films usually account for around 10% of revenue but with frozen it was a whopping 25%. It was generally perceived as one of those movies where 3D heightens the experience rather than diminishing it. I'm reasonably confident it will be the same in Japan

The Roma II is also issued by TOHO... and its prequel gets around 6b Yen . So, biggest screen
True...but the first one only opened to just above ¥400 million, it had great legs though. No telling how big it will open this time... do openings generally rise for sequels in Japan?Competition is very fierce this week -
It is quite simple. It is a local new movie, and it is issued by TOHO.
BTW, in the Japanese website, Conan is the weekend winner because it has the most audience on 4.19~4.20.
Yes but even in admissions it was very close.
Keeping in mind it was Conan's OW and that it usually drops in the second week, the safer bet would be Frozen which hasn't dropped at all since opening week. We already saw this monday conan losing to frozen in admissions.
Conan being issued by Toho could be a factor I guess....
-
I really see no reason why Frozen should get less seats than Conan...
Thermae Romae II is a female orientated film so it could be frozen's biggest challenger this weekend.
-
Spiderman is sorely needed right now. Presales seem strong thankfully.

here is 15 weeks of data comparison. Mojo had weekend 5&6 missing, I guessed there.
post GW hold is critical to your projections I'm thinking.
So, there they have some data that MOJO doesn't include?
Yeah Corpse is a jedi master when it comes to the Japanese BO. can't believe he isnt japanese

What's this WOKJ?

$19m but $43 million in today's rate exchange.
Unfortunately yes, the gap is larger in yen.

Here is spirited away . No 25m week in number 9. Currency was 18% lower then. Drop two decimals from yen to get current dollars. First 7 weekend and weeks are bigger, but it was summer. The left hand column is weekends yes?
I could see Frozen with the GW bump possibly holding better than SA did for weekends.
But man those midweeks were huge for spirited away...

According to movie walker Japan, this weekend Frozen will have 631 screens ( last Sunday : 594)
but spiderman 2 will have 708 screens . This is the updated information so far.
So they're taking screens from conan?
Also does that increase include the 150 3D dubbed screens you mentioned?
-
I've been hoping frozen's popularity would lead some Japanese people onto here but so far nothing. Well I guess there's still time...
-
Corpse is not Japanese.
Really? Well that's a shock..
-
bom sometimes merges countries
That's a pretty good idea actually. makes tracking a whole lot easier.
Is anyone here ACTUALLY Japanese and living in Japan? I'm curious how the general reactions from the Japanese people are.
Corpse is the only Japanese I've seen. Labas does a pretty good job bringing us reactions though.

It remains to be seen what kind of effect the ferry disaster will have on TASM2's opening. It certainly impacted last weeks box office.
For now it looks have a bigger OD than CA2 at least but CA2 had huge presales going into the weekend (177k with 62% share)
Tasm2 will have to do the same to open big.
TASM had 1.7M admissions in a 4day OW so 2m in a 5 day OW isn't out of the question. whether it can co-exist with the fatal encounter the following week is the bigger problem really.
Current presales: 51,553 (44% share)

Oh yeah, I assumed they didn't without checking.
The only way they could know how much it made in others is by subtracting the total number with what they have for each country, which would make each country "accurate" by definition so it would be pointless.
Or something else then. I find it hard to believe a country like indonesia doesn't have BO tracking of any sort. Maybe with a little effort they could track those countries.
-
ThanksI am more surprised is that Rsyu sumed all of those numbers. wow! you have my respect!
it's really not really that difficult using excel

Japan has been updated. It shows as $104m, might be lower than actuals though. They should put countries they don't track/list under "others" category or something. That way we can know that the grosses of each country is accurateNotice how the Frozen OS page only has 53 markets listed, but Frozen was released in more than 70 markets... Also BOM has not yet updated the last week of Japan grosses, but those numbers are taken in to account in the total OS number.
-
That makes sense I guess but a $40m error is still huge. Some of those grosses must be really off...It has always been this way, BOM gets the individual country numbers from various sources, sometimes local. The total OS number is not an addition of all of BOM's individual county tracking, but rather a direct number from the distributor. BOM has never tracked every single market so have to do it this way.
-
THIS!! Seriously, when BOM stopped reporting box office from Indonesia last year I was like NOOOOOOOO! I'm dying to know how big Frozen is in term of box office numbers. Btw Despicable Me 2 was the highest grossing animated film ever with around $6.2m. Do you think Frozen beat it? Minions are extremely popular here though.
Actually now that you mention it, I did a quick comparison between the reported OS number and the sum of the grosses of each individual country and there's actually a big discrepancy.
Bom reports that frozen has grossed $729,300,000 (a suspiciously round number) but the sum of the gross from each country comes to $689,147,955. I smell something fishy....
-
That's V helpfulIf I'm not mistaken, "V" here stands for "Victory", so "V6" means it's #1 for the 6th week.
thanks

JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW
in International Box Office
Posted
Admissions it is 11th highest and 2nd among foreign films
Gross it is 6th highest and again 2nd highest among foreign films
local films are more popular here, frozen and avatar are generally viewed as the exception.
