filled with envy right now

I'm 100% KoreanIt's much more simple than than. Basically I joined just before Avengers was released and then the masses followed suit when they realised I was here
(that's what I like to think anyway)IN seriousness though I am not sure how many of the korea members are Korean and how many are foreigners living over here. (I am not Korean for example)
I wish more people made this kind of "insane" wager at the beginning of frozen's DOM and OS run. We could have seen some amazing sights!I'm ready to make a wager. If Frozen will make 200m in japan, i will braid my hair in Elsa's style and post it for everybody to laugh at. I'm a guy with a long hair.

Do you have any presale numbers olive??I counted again and Frozen will have 583 screens in Japan on Friday.

2014 february SK box office
admissions: 18,56M (-15% from 2013)
gross: 138,788,716,956 won ($129.95M) (-12.2% from 2013)
Besides from miss granny and frozen, no other movie managed more than 1m admissions hence the overall decrease.
Korean movies accounted for 53.4% of movies.
Korean+hollywood movies accounted for 97.3% of admissions.

In South Korea you are very ambitious about English learning and conquest of foreign markets, this is why there are many of you here.In Japan they're much more inward-looking and their English skills are weaker..they slowly try to improve because they know they need it but that will take time. It's sad but that explain why we don't have Japanese members here, despite Japan clearly has a bigger population than SK.
Frozen brought me here specifically but I catch your drift
-
Just when you thought frozen couldn't break any more records in South Korea it breaks more.
Frozen sets a record for the most VOD sales ever according to "Olleh tv" which provides internet tv services.
On the day of it's release (3/3) frozen set the record for largest gross in a single day with $552,434
As of 3/10 it has grossed a total of $2.03m with 156,000 downloads
To put this number into perspective, in the same time period frozen managed 153,000 admissions in theaters with $1.19m in gross.
other big internet tv companies "U+tvG" and "B tv" also announced that frozen broke daily sale records but did not disclose their cumulative gross. Frozen is also ranked #1 & #2 (different versions) in download on Korea's biggest portal site Naver. exact numbers for that I don't know
And all this in a country where illegal downloads is second nature to people

We need more Japanese members on here! Too little information on the finer details such as BO buzz
-
Kinda like Miracle in Cell No.7 then? I laughed a lot and cried a lot watching that movie. Sounds good to me.
Yeah many are drawing that comparison actually. Miss granny has more songs though which made it more enjoyable to a music lover like me
-
Are there any presale numbers available?? Or doesn't Japan keep track of that? I've read some reviews by Japan netizens and overall it seemed positive which is good.
-
It's a lot like the movie "big" (starring tom hanks) only with a female lead. It's a humorous and touchy-feely type of movie. Nothing spectacular but well worth the watch in my opinion.Wow Miss Granny is still doing great. Is the movie any good? It's released here today, and I'm kinda interested.
-
Its doing very well in sk, biggest OS market to date.As of 3/9Admission: 1.5mGross:$10.6mUK comes next with $8.9m and france grossed $6.2m
-
Heh $100m for me
don't make me a liar Japan!!

To be fair to omni I think he's a pretty strong frozen fan. He just bases his predictions within the realms of reason. Frozen destroys reason

Do hollywood movies generally get more sc than local films?Friday in Japan552+ screens Ralph 421Final SC may be over 600, still 10% less than MU.MU 661 screensThe Wind Rises 454(very big SC for a local movie)
-
Here goes an example:
In Argentina:
Frozen (2014) / 1.93 M admissions / $11.5 M / ARS 90.56 M
Shrek the Third (2007) / 1.94 M admissions / $6.2 M / ARS 18.63 M
Almost same admissions but in money the difference is hugh...
ARS = Argentinean Pesos
Thanks for that. Glad to know Frozen got the better exchange rate!

I'd say admission numbers are the more objective barometer when ranking movies, as population fluctuation is pretty stable when compared to currency. Having said that currency is much more useful in comparing budgets and gross to see how well the movie did financially which is probably what the studios care about more. Both are important when comparing movies imo.Are their any countries besides sk which uses admissions as their main BO barometer?

I doubt it gets to 10M OW, I'm not even sure if any movie hit that number last year. 5M will be great and should lead to 60M+.
Yeah, none hit 10m on OW last year but there were multiple (3 or 4) in 2012. interestingly Hollywood films have more 10m+ OW than Japanese films 23/34.
-
Isn't $10m a little bit too high? Frozen is WDAS, not Pixar. They are different. FN was released after MI broke out, and Hollywood movies were more popular back then. MU and TS3 are sequel/prequel. I don't think they're comparable. Besides, $10m OW is very rare lately. Even The Wind Rises couldn't manage to do it. And it was heavily promoted as the last movie from Miyazaki.
Pretty valid point I guess, especially now that you mention TWR's OW. Still Frozen does have extraordinary global hype at the moment and 2 oscars to it's name (Something I don't think the previous animated films had) which should translate to a good OW for frozen.
Record book was thrown out of the window in SK (grossed tangled X10) hoping Japan follows suit

Some OW numbers of WDAS/Pixar films in Japan
Title/OW/% of total gross/total gross
FN- $10,331,939 10.1% $102,441,470
MU $8,374,662 9.3% $90,141,508
The Incredibles $7,299,536 14.6% $49,967,205
TS3 $11,156,768 8.8% $126,660,533
Monsters, Inc. $4,471,902 6% $74,437,612
Tangled $1,743,372 5.6% $31,081,461 (Low OW was because of the earthquake I think)
WiR $3,629,743 12.2% $29,646,724

Are we looking for 10m opening weekend in Japan?
That sounds solid. Similar to FN's OW.
-
The lego movie failed in korea primarily because of disagreements between WB and 2 of the 3 major local distributing chains. DoS faced the same problem. 300 RoaE sorted out the disagreements and as a result it's doing well (#1 at sk box office)
-
Finally BOM updated the swedish box office. Frozen: $8.4 M until March, 2nd
that's a solid performance
It makes frozen the current highest grossing movie of 2014 in sweden (not saying much this early in the year but still) and it looks likely to end in the top 5 grossing films of the year.
UK continues to surprise too

Yeah I was thinking of 9m as the optimistic scenario where it would keep hold of it's screens through lack of competitors more than anything else. It will get close to that mark though
-
Was thinking almost the same thing. If you think that Frozen has effectively 'stolen' 7million admissions from somewhere I think its safe to say that maybe even half of that would have gone to Miss Granny.
The reverse is also true I think. Miss granny and frozen both prevented each other from reaching their full potential.
I'm thinking miss granny will finish at around a resectable 9m admissions.
