  1. My 2PM showing for Homecoming was jam-packed. Expect a strong opening, possibly 400K admissions.
  2. Yeah, some chains have opened up pre-buyable tickets up to July 30, which is actually pretty bizarre. For sure, I'm definitely watching this. All signs point it to being a thoroughly enjoyable movie-experience
  3. I think maybe 300-350K. 500K for OD is huge.
  4. Spider-Man: Homecoming presale update (4PM local time): 178,738 (73.8% share)

  6. Something along the lines of 1.3-1.5M admissions 3 day OW would be a good opening I think, putting it in the top 20 OW for a July release. That would put the 5 day somewhere around 1.8-2.0M-ish admissions.
  7. Presales for Spider-Man: Homecoming already highest of the franchise with one day to spare.
  8. I thought Okja was a pretty heartening film, one where you can appreciate the message it is trying to convey whilst being able to crack a smile at the often, over-the-top dialogue and situations that are presented. The gentle mix and contrast of cultures as well as values was also something I found to be very interesting and thought provoking. I felt the acting too was noteworthy. Some of the performances in Okja was so over the top it was actually hilarious. Jake Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of the insecure, alcoholic TV animal specialist, Paul Dano shown as the principled leader of ALF who nonetheless weighs his entire operation to be less than the opinion of a single little girl, and Tilda Swinton as the foul mouthed (great delivery on the curses) and somewhat childlike CEO of a multinational corporation all juxtaposed and fused together gloriously into something quite bizarre and unexpected that I couldn’t help but laugh at it all. Whether or not the characters in Okja were written that way for comedic effect, it definitely made the performances more memorable. I also thought it was interesting that the plot centered around a genetically modified pig for consumption purposes, because to my knowledge they already do this in several countries. I read a paper recently that said geneticists had found a gene that suppressed growth of the “lean meat” portion of a pig (which is highly favored for consumption) and that they had cloned a breed of pigs with this gene’s function knocked out to create a more commercially advantageous organism (ie, with more growth in the lean meat area). While there is indeed a general consensus in the scientific field that such genetically modified organisms are harmless in themselves, I must confess I still find it a bit disturbing that humans are actively fiddling with the fabric of nature and life in such a way. Just my two cents. Rating A-
  9. No not really, REAL has an 18+ rating for one compared to Anarchist's 12+ meaning narrower demography. But even without that, REAL has been plagued with problems and controversy during filming and production, which snowballed and culminated in generally negative reactions during advance screenings. Consequently, REAL's rating on Naver has been plummeting post-release, having already fallen to 4.59/10.0 after just one day.
  10. TF5 went from 6822 showtimes yesterday to 3595 showtimes today yet admissions inexplicably rose 6.5 points against two new releases.
  11. Presales usually start picking up in earnest on the week of release. Hardcore fans aside, people generally don't book a week in advance having said that, it's doubled since yesterday so I'd say that is a decent increase.
  12. I think it's ideal to compare Spider-Man: Homecoming to TASM, which is the most successful Spiderman film to date and had a similar release date (June 28). This is the presale figure for TASM on the day of release (it's the film in #1 slot with 123,580 presold admissions) TASM opened to less competition but had Deranged in its second week, which managed 4.5M admissions. Spider-Man: Homecoming opening week will be against 3 local films in their second week but the good news is that it looks like it will have little competition until Dunkirk hits the theaters on July 20. With the added factor of RDJ (huge in SK) $30M should be the floor in my opinion. Hopefully the presales will start to pick up soon. Spider-man franchise in Korea 1. Spiderman (2002) Gross: $16.9M Admissions: #no data 2. Spiderman 2 (2004) Gross: $13M Admissions: 1.5M 3. Spiderman 3 (2007) Gross: $34M Admissions: 4.6M 4. The Amazing Spider-man (2012) Gross: $36m Admissions: 4.85M 5. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) Gross: $33.8M Admissions: 4.17M
  13. That would be bordering on 'hate' levels IMO..tomorrows numbers should give us an idea what the weekend will look like.
  14. It didn't hit me the way Frozen did, can't really describe why. Still, I enjoyed it well enough. Rating B+
  15. Yeah..we all knew it would sometime this week, but I don't think many would have imagined it would start collapsing against zero competition. No way to explain that 22 point daily drop other than toxic word of mouth.
  16. Great film, I really enjoyed it. As some have mentioned, the ending felt a tad predictable (he kills everyone again) but it's one helluva ride to be sure which more than made up for it for me Also I have to say, I got a huge kick out of the Morpheus-Neo reunion felt like old times Grade: A-
  17. [Tuesday Box Office] Transformers: The Last Knight (6/27) Admissions: 78,144 (-22.7%) Total admissions (with previews): 1,929,652 Gross (USD): $531K Total Gross (USD): $14.12M Seat Saturation: 6.1% It probably won't even gross $20M. Kinda shocked at how bad this is doing.
  18. 2017 summer blockbuster Preview #3: A Taxi Driver (August 2) Synopsis A Taxi Driver (택시 운전사) is an upcoming South Korean drama film directed by Jang Hoon, starring Song Kang-ho and Thomas Kretschmann. It follows Man-seob, a taxi driver from Seoul, who gets involved in a German journalist's reporting of the events of the Gwangju Democratization Movement in 1980. Gwangju Decomcratization movement The Gwangju Uprising, alternatively called May 18 Democratic Uprising by UNESCO, and also known as Gwangju Democratization Movement was a popular uprising in the city of Gwangju, South Korea, from May 18 to 27, 1980. Estimates suggest up to 606 people may have died. During this period, Gwangju citizens took up arms (by robbing local armories and police stations) when local Chonnam University students – who were demonstrating against the Chun Doo-hwan government – were fired upon, killed, and beaten in an unprecedented attack by government troops. The uprising eventually ended in defeat on May 27, 1980. Analysis A Taxi Driver sees actor Song Kang-ho return to the big screen less than a year since his last film "Age of Shadows" from 2016. He remains highly prolific and is one of the most respected actors in Korea today with over 100M admissions to his name. A typical powerhouse performance from Song Kang-ho coupled with a theme that is an emotional point for many Koreans, released during peak summer box office means this could turn out to be another 10M+ admission film. As long as they release several weeks after A Battleship Island, the box office should be able to accommodate both films, similar to how Veteran and Assassination coexisted in the summer of 2015. Despite being released two weeks apart, both films went on to do 13.4M and 12.7M admissions respectively.
