  1. I wouldn't read too much into presales (which is pretty decent actually). Movies released around this time usually rely more on legs than huge openings.
  2. Harry Potter Series Box Office (admissions) 1. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone (2001): 4,300,000 2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002): 4,000,000 3. Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban (2004): 2,532,000 4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005): 3,615,000 5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007): 3,475,000 6. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (2009): 3,002,669 7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt.1 (2010): 2,809,053 8. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt.2 (2011): 4,400,298 Philosopher's stone and Chamber of Secrets did the best amount of business considering the relative small size of the box office back then. Philosopher's Stone in particular, would adjust to around 11M admissions if we factored in just the box office growth from back then to what it is now. Presale update for Fantastic Beasts (D-1 1:35PM Local time) 01. 86,953 (48.6% share)
  3. Fantastic beasts presales update (3:30PM Local time) 1. 25,782 (25.0% share)
  4. Basically what I've come to expect from a Marvel film which is solid entertainment, good visuals, with a few light laughs mixed in. I recommend that people who found it boring lighten up a little Rating: A
  5. Fantastic beasts and where to find them presales started today. 6. 3,210 (3.5% share) can't wait to see it!
  6. Crowd reaction for Dr strange was great at my showing. I heard scattered clappin at the end which is extremely rare in Korea current naver rating audience: 8.97 netizen: 8.87 Critics: 7.03 very decent ratings
  7. Seems like a pretty normal, post culture day drop to me. I think CA:CW and AoU showed that Marvel, while hugely popular have a fairly limited audience demography in Korea. That they had bad legs doesn't really mean that they were badly recieved, they just ran out of audience from the target demography to watch it. I don't think Doctor Strange's run will play like those films though with the difference in release date, showtime allocation, anticipation factor etc.
  8. yeah, that's an amazing OD for Doctor Strange. Interested to see how today's number will play Yeah sherlock is pretty much a household name here, especially among the younger generation. The theatrical release did okay, 1,278,885 admissions and $8.3M, which was a tidy bit of business, especially relative to the other territories.
  9. 2M seems a tad high to me, especially outside of the holiday frame but 1.5M is more approachable. Word of mouth will have to be excellent though. Optimistically it could play like 120K-300K-170K-240K-350K-320K.
  10. We can expect inflated numbers today being culture day and all.
  11. Docter strange came in 2nd in the box office yesterday with advanced showings (evening). Admissions were 118,020. it'/ currently first in presales with 71.3% share (268,233 adm)
  12. My favorite scene in the movie (and I'm sure for a lot of other people too!). I think it works so well because everyone can relate to it on a really deep and personal level. Absolutely lovely film and one that is infinitely rewatchable. A+
  13. The first one did pretty poorly so I'm thinking there's a high probability that it will happen. Tom Cruise is one of the most beloved hollywood actors in Korea and he's as popular as ever nowadays. If the film is watchable, it should do pretty well.
  14. I'm pretty confident Dr. Strange will open at #1, the gap in presales is huge right now. Marvel films are an established brand here and Benedict is a well known and popular actor here which will help. Legs will depend on word of mouth and the quality of the film.
  15. Pretty bad for Inferno, considering Da vinci code and Angels and demons did pretty well in Korea. Ratings on Naver is pretty decent though (low 8s), maybe it'll have some legs
  16. Marvel films in Korea Films from the MCU have enjoyed a high success rate in Korea ever since the first Iron Man came out. It'll be interesting to see whether Doctor Strange can be added to the list as another hit for Marvel. MCU admissions (Chronological order) -phase one- 1. 4,316,003 Iron Man (2008) 2. 992,064 The Incredible Hulk (2008) 3. 4,498,335 Iron Man 2 (2010) 4. 1,694,529 Thor (2011) 5. 514,417 CA: TFA (2011) 6. 7,074,867 The Avengers (2012) -phase two- 1. 9,001,309 Iron Man 3 (2013) 2. 3,039,889 Thor: The Dark World (2013) 3. 3,963,220 Captain America: The Winter Solider (2014) 4. 1,311,190 Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) 5. 10,494,499 The Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) 6. 2,841,699 Ant-Man (2015) -Phase three- 1. 8,676,320 Captain America: Civil War (2015)
  17. Doctor strange presales (D-1) 116,267 (70.1% share)
  18. On an absolute scale, TFA didn't do badly at all. It just did poorly when compared to other territories but the star wars/star trek brand is close to a non-entity over here so it makes sense. But yeah, films like star wars and star trek are basically space operas with little to no relevance to scientific facts and themes which is the difference I think you're alluding to between the sub-genres.
  19. It was just released two days ago. I'll give you the admissions and gross i dollars Pre-release: 43,283 ($335K) wed: 61,271 ($432K) Thu: 71,116 ($499K) Not a bad opening considering the age limitation and the genre. Horror flicks hardly ever open big. Ratings are in the mid 8s out of 10 on Naver which is pretty good for a horror film. It could increase during the second week if it gets good word of mouth.
  20. It'll be showed at the Busan film festival today but it doesn't seem to have a commercial release date yet. But you're right, the market is very open to sci-fi themed movies right now and with good WoM it could easily break out.
  21. Peregrine managed to beat asura. Impressive.
  22. Early naver ratings for 9/28 releases Asura: The city of madness -Audience: 7.80/10.0 (188 votes) -Netizen: 7.52/10.0 (1,277 votes) Sully -Audience: 9.56/10.0 (9 votes) -Netizen: 9.26/10.0 (47 votes) Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children -Audience: 9.60/10.0 (42 votes) -Netizen: 9.34/10.0 (170 votes)
  23. <Song Kang-ho hits 100 million admissions> With his most recent film "Age of shadows" reaching 7M admissions, Song Jang-ho has become the second actor in Korean film history to acquire more than 100M admissions, the first being Oh dal-su. Unlike Oh dal-su however, Song Kang-ho has set this record with films in which he was the main lead making the feat all the more impressive. Song Kang-ho last year celebrated the 20th year since his debut in 1996 with the film "The day a pig fell into a well". He has since enjoyed a stellar career with films like Swiri, Number3, Memories of murder, JSA, THe Host, Snowpiercer and so on. 24. It's pretty good, enjoyed the action and acting overall. The film itself has a pretty similar feel to Assassination from last year.
