Leaving Superman out was probably a mistake, but considering he was the most criticized element of BVS, maybe it wouldn't have made much of a difference.

What? Luthor was the only character to largely be hated on. I didn't hear many saying the characters or actors were BvS's issue...

Batman Begins isn't certainly my favorite of the trilogy (I'm a fan of all three), but it's certainly the best pure live-action "Batman" film we've gotten to date.

It's good though the 2nd half is pure popcorn action. The first draft of the script was better, Nolan rewrites were bizarre.

A rebooted Batman ‘done well’ is not coming close to 1.5 billion, I’ll take that bet(if I were a betting man) against anyone on this board. Excel ran the numbers of TDK and TDKR(which I don’t believe) around 1.2 billion, still far short of 1.5 billion. It’s not happening. A rebooted Spider-Man film ‘done well’ with the addition of Iron Man didn’t even cross 900 million. Most people consider SH a tremendous success!!

$1.2b without a bunch of factors that would easily be in its favor today...

3d, China, Inflation, maturing of the intenrational market are all 100% included in the global market being 38.5b instead of 27.7B

These movie were trully massive domestic, but Dark Knight oversea performance in 2008 was exactly the same than a terrible indiana Jones movie, lower than Shrek 3 much lower, 100 millions than The Davinci Code 2 year's before.

Still today DC movie oversea are not that special, not sure why it would have changed.

Comic book movies are much more 'in' internationally today than they were in 2008. TDK largely helped initiate that trend.

The Avengers is the most attended film of all time world wide. Hands down.

Not sure if this is a serious remark or not. It should be obvious TDK $535m in 2008 dollars and no 3D translates above Avengers $620 with 4 years of inflation and one of the largest 3D shares in history...

Also not sure even Dark Knight that went has well has it could, did 1 billion in 2008 without a China release but it was not a big market then.

It is a bit below 1.5 billion in 2017 performance.

    Not a perfect metric but

    Global Box office :

    2008: 27.7b

    2016: 38.6b

Using the ratio in market size, that is a 1.4B performance and now the competition is quite big in the genre and Batman was used a lot recently before that new iteration.

That is a good point, in 2012 batman was making 1 billion in is solo movie, Iron-Man without RDJ/MCU brand helping it ? Maybe, maybe not....

A bit like Wolverine, Iron-Man has a superheroes is totally untested vs the many recasted, often giant Box office that are Batman and Spiderman.

Realistically adding 3D, China, inflation, maturing of international markets, sneaks at 6 PM instead of just midnight, and removing the terrible shooting puts the grosses at:

    TDK: $755M/$1.7B

    TDKR: $$645M/$1.6B

Those movies were truly massive. Each sold out midnight showings weeks and weeks in advance. Star Wars is the only thing that really compares to it today. JW was much more was up heavy than either TDK film were the buzz was straight deafening for months.

We'll see about that when RDJ is no longer playing the part. Spider-Man is still a hell of a lot more popular than any of them if we just look at the kids merchandise.

Yet Iron Man-Spider-man combo this summer wasn't anything special and barely topped THOR solo.

Perhaps audiences are beginning to get over these team up films.

1.5 billion?? What freaking load of bull. No Batman film has come close to even 1.2 million, but a rebooted Batman film will outgrossed TDK and TDKR?

    Put the pipe down.

    Wrong.

    1) Neither of those had 3D

    2) International was not close to what it is now in 2008

    3) TDKR domestic suffered greatly from shooting

The Dark Knight was the 2nd biggest domestic hit of all time and 3rd biggest globally at time of release. It remains the most attended of all superhero films. The Dark Knight Rises would almost certainly set the OW attendance record had the shooting not occurred & it would have lasted 3 and 1/2 years.

With inflation, each of those films hits:

    TDK: $670M dom/$1.25B ww

    TDKR: $514m dom/$1.27B ww

That is without 3D and IMAX growth. TDKR lost dozens of millions from the shooting killing much of the opening weekend buzz among GA

Christopher Nolan is not coming back nor should he.  The guy produced and directed a shoddy final movie that he was contractually obligated to do and everyone involved couldn't wait to be done with and it showed.

What? TDKR is the strongest thematically of the 3. TDK is easily the most flawed of the films if one ignores Ledger and Eckhart's insane performances. Nolan himself was obsessed with the TDKR storyline to the point he canceled his Howard Hughes film. Only thing Nolan disliked about TDKR was inability to bring back HL.

I don't think those are on this level...   this is a movie if done right could have challenged Avengers and Jurassic World numbers.

Would have required totally different reactions to BVS and SS, if not requiring no BVS all together.

BVS blew the novelty factor of JL & everyone knows it.

  11. Serious Excel for a moment.

From 2008 through 2016, Batman was the biggest character on Earth. Yes there were bigger brands, but no solo character film would out open a Batman film. Now in late 2017, we have a Batman film featuring Superman and red hot Wonder Woman possibly opening below $100m.

When/if done well, solo Batman films will challenge $1.5b on their own.

Why not protect this mega character instead of running it into the ground? Bizarre strategic decision.

I realize that heads already rolled at Warner Bros.  but I think if this number holds up then heads should roll again.   This would be maybe not the biggest bomb but definitely the most disappointing box office result of the last twenty years.

    What?

The Hobbit, Mocking Jay 1 and 2, Fantastic Beasts etc were all similar fashion. BVS was always going to steal novelty factor buzz & then add in 1) that everybody hated BVS and SS, 2) mid November instead of summer, 3) Thor break out, 4) not great reviews. Boom. Barring a very leggy run, this should be end of Batfleck & start of several lucrative solo series.

Really should wait a good 7-8 years for the series to play their course and they reintroduce Batman solo. Batman Begins would be near 20 years old by this point anyway and the character ready for a return.,
