Um...yes? Did think it was a downgrade from GvK and probably second-worst of the whole Monsterverse saga behind only King of the Monsters. Had fun with it, but there were some deep flaws in the direction (mainly the VFX and comedy) that drag the piece down. But I get the appeal. And the kids in the audience seemed hyped, so good for them.

I love Anya and I have no problem with Miller's creative decisions, but I do wonder if Furiosa would be looking a lot better in terms of buzz and hype if Charlize was reprising her role again. Kinda feels like a Solo situation, and at least that was still part of the biggest sci-fi movie franchise of all time.

Generally agree with most of this. Though probably gonna aim a bit higher on Despicable Me and Twisters (DM4 is definitely the strongest contender to unseat Inside Out 2 for movie of the summer IMO), and lower on Deadpool (superheroes are box office poison now 👀)

That one is easily the worst, so it’s what she deserves. I know there are people here who love it, but even if you are just here for the monster action, I can’t see the appeal when everything is pitch black and full of thunderstorms, so you can’t see shit. Just an ugly looking movie in general. GvK is flawed as hell, but at least I could see what I was looking at.

Honestly, if they just kept the airport fight, the reception of the movie would have done a total 180. It justifies the build-up we got, we have a cool action scene midway to keep the audience avoiding restless, and the climax is still satisfactory. Just not cutting to news footage would have made things so much better. Jaws still showed the shark eating the tourists. If they cut away to news footage and a kid watching on TV, people would not regard it as the classic it is.

I mean it still did well above the mid-30s most here expected, and the focus on the original cast as the main hook was arguably a detriment. The audience who would care don’t go to the theaters anymore, and Afterlife emphasized the new cast and Stranger Things vibes to bring in new, younger crowds. I doubt a third movie would do well, but this is fine enough imo.
