  1. Yeah... At that point, wouldn't they stand to make more by releasing it on Blu Ray and DVD? Not that they aren't going to be making bank on those dancing Groot toys once they hit the market anyway.
  2. True. If I recall right they were also mentioning a heavy teen girls/young women audience and that does seem to favour Friday evenings, at least if they're hoping for them to turn out in groups...
  3. Yeah, it's possible but it may not suffer the same fate considering D&D2 is a fairly standard lowbrow comedy and SC2 released with a glut of comic films preceding it. I personally wouldn't waste money on D&D2, but I'm guessing it's not trying to be particularly deep.
  4. It'd be nice to see something hit 300m domestically. I expect the next Hunger Games will and possibly The Hobbit 3 or Interstellar, but realistically unless something completely shocking happens we're looking at less than five films this year that can even potentially pass that mark... And that's assuming GotG doesn't top out between 280-290 or get its legs cut out from under it by Disney pulling it early. Edit: The Hobbit 3, even. Surprised I got that number wrong but maybe it was because I found #2 so underwhelming.
  5. Not that I'm complaining about the idea of GotG coming out on top this weekend... but where is this prediction coming from? IIS had higher Friday numbers... do they really think it's that front loaded and will drop so much or is there something else I'm missing? Also... just wow. I expected SC2 to tank, but those numbers are just sad.
  6. Not to burst your bubble, but IIS is probably going to be on top this weekend, not TMNT. OTOH, I'm kind of expecting SC2 to do what Expendables 3 did last week and wind up in third or fourth.

I'm wondering this too. I've not heard anyone in the local comic shops mentioning Intersteller, nor on any of the forums or blogs I frequent... or on facebook or twitter. I haven't gone looking, mind you, but seriously, coming to these forums is the first I'd even heard of it.
  8. Urgh. Not surprised to get verification that they severely altered the Giver. If they had released it 20 years ago as intended, it would have been fairly unique. I'm also sad to hear that not only did they age up the characters, but that they added a pointless romantic subplot as well? Can anyone verify this? I mean damn... they really did their best to make it a generic YA release, didn't they? Not surprised that they got such low numbers. Frankly they might have done better if they'd been a more faithful adaptation because there wasn't a huge chance of them getting the general YA market that Hunger Games and Divergent did... they could have at least avoided alienating what fanbase the book does have.
  9. It should depend on how well the Hobbit pulls numbers. Several folks I know were tired after the first two but I'm guessing people will still go see it because it's the last.
  10. You just know they're laughing their way to the bank with this one. 17.7 isn't huge, but their 5 day gross has already covered their expenses. Anything from here is just icing on the cake. Gotta love low budget films.
  11. I'm interested in seeing how both of these movies hold since there aren't many other choices for families until Dolphin Tale 2 and The Boxtrolls come out . Though considering school is back in, weekday numbers are bound to drop for both films.
  12. To be fair... some of the TMNT purist fanboys have also gone way over the top with bitching about TMNT... and there's fans of other MCU properties bitching about GotG and also fans of TMNT leaving messages about how TMNT has 'clobbered' Guardians in the box office. And all of the above fans plus DC purists griping about the upcoming Batman and Superman movie. It's kind of the nature of fans to bitch.
  13. I guess the real question I have is whether Sin City will make 20 mil, or if any of the other upcoming releases will, or if it's going to be a matter of the ones running now just slowly winding down until we get something big opening.
  14. Box Trolls looks intriguing, but I haven't been seeing a lot in the way of advertising/marketing for it. Most of what small buzz I'm hearing is from the community of animation buffs, especially those excited for a stop-motion release. That is not going to have any bearing at all on the target demographic of kids though. It may get a boost for being a new family film in a market that's been sorely lacking this summer.
  15. I think I have to agree with you here. I remember being surprised that it was even being fielded considering how long ago the first one came out.
  16. What are people thinking in regards to Sin City's release? I know everyone is talking about the next few weekends being slow but I keep seeing the Sin City display adverts at the local theaters.
  17. Guardians had a good hold on Friday, especially considering it dropped so many screens. It would have gotten higher if not for that. We went to see it Friday night and the theater was packed. The usher actually had to come around and see if there were available seats for some people who wanted to buy tickets. There weren't. Normally I'd imagine they'd go to TMNT as an alternative but I doubt they wanted to wait an hour and a half until the next showing. Or that they'd want to attend an 9pm showing with kids in tow. Very impressed with Boyhood and 100 Foot Journey. Both are on my to-watch list.
  18. Yeah, I kind of agree. Most folks seem kind of ambivalent to TMNT and the general attitude is kind of "not great but not terrible" or "an okay flick to take the kids to". Most of the real vitriol I've seen is from die-hard TMNT fans who liked older versions and compare it harshly to the movies/cartoons/comics they personally loved.
  19. Can anyone verify that Adam Warlock's cocoon was open in the post credits scene? Some people have mentioned it but I hadn't spotted it myself.
  20. Haha. Yeah. I'm just impatient and having to wait an additional 5 hours drives me batty.
  21. Sometimes it sucks living in Eastern time. Most of the final numbers roll in while my schedule has me unavailable.
  22. So is Turtles off 58% or is it off 60%? Deadline is saying 60, but I'm not finding verification.
  23. I encourage it. But admittedly I like Scar-Jo more than Angelina Jolie. OTOH if Lucy had come out before her role as Black Widow, I'm not sure it would have done so well.
  24. See Transformers 2 - 4 as further evidence that dumb crap can make money. Not fair maybe but it still happens.
