  1. I've seen more than a bit, though perhaps not as much as I'd like. However, it's not actually in competition with BH6 and the overall dearth of suitable animated and/or family fare this year is bound to work to its advantage, especially since GotG (another action/comedy) played well with the family crowd despite the rating. Something with a similar 'genre' and audience appeal should do just as well (or a bit better as parents won't have to be worried about certain content with BH6 the way they would have to be with GotG). Besides, Disney Animated features tend to do okay, even if they don't do huge numbers. Remember that expectations for animated films aren't usually the same as for other types. Also... regardless of the box office take, you know that Disney will be making money hand over fist on toys and other tie-ins. I've already been seeing BH6 stuff available in toy stores for weeks.
  2. At first I was like "WTF" when I saw this trailer and then I realised that it's pretty true to... well... everything about Spongebob except for the animation. I generally really dislike when things go the "3D animated cartoon characters brought into the real world" route (ie: Smurfs) but Spongebob Squarepants is one of the few properties where I think the zany style of the show actually works well with that premise. I don't plan to see it in theatres myself but I might give it a watch on DVD.
  3. That one icon just makes me think of the line "we all float down here". Btw, where are my BoL numbers? I hope it has some good holds this weekend...
  4. I know there's been some worry about the Japanese reception of BH6, but this is encouraging: Here's a Japanese review of BH6: http://otakumode.com/news/544e3438fe25d42d762cefd6/Movie-Review-We-Attend-the-World%E2%80%99s-First-Screening-of-Big-Hero-6-!-Disney%E2%80%99s-Newest-Work-is-a-Story-About-the-%E2%80%9CBirth-of-a-Hero%E2%80%9D It seems like this may be well received in Japan, which would be great for its overseas box office. Here's a snippet: "I recognized some parts of the city and found myself thinking “Is that Shinbashi?” and “Is that Shinjuku?”, and in the city there are boards written in Japanese, telephone polls and vending machines, and cars and buses driving by that appeared to have a “made in Japan” vibe. Many times, signs will be rewritten in Japanese for the Japanese dubbed version of animated films, but the version I saw was the subtitled version. Basically, from here on out people all over the world will see Disney’s love of Japan. Jealous? Of course, the Japanese feel doesn’t end with the cityscape of San Fransokyo. This may touch on a few stereotypes, but, talking about Baymax’s kindness (and possibly form?), the director has commented on the diligence of the main character in working hard to achieve his goals and his unique idea that could also be called a waste of talent. In any case, while enjoying the film, I was awash in droves of love letters to all of us from Disney, messages that almost didn’t make it in time. It is a privilege that Japanese people are able to experience the film on this deeper level!" And, speaking of Baymax: "Disney has created many hugely popular characters over the years, but this is the birth of a new character (hero) whose name has been marvelously engraved on Disney’s history." The reviewer sums it all up pretty well at the beginning: " This film as well is a masterpiece that dispelled all doubts. Disney is in its element here, and because it differs from the so-called “Disney Princess” formula there is no need for comparison. Personally, though, it’s become a film I love even more than Frozen." If their reaction is any indication, this movie should do wonderfully in the Japanese market! I'm crossing my fingers!
  5. This is it, folks, we're under a week away now! Hang on to your hats!
  6. lol, Seriously though. These thread titles in general can make things confusing or hard to find. This isn't the worst, by far. I've seen a lot of 'em that can be a bit obtuse.
  7. Nolanite propaganda. Why isn't anyone mentioning BH6 coming out this weekend while they're at it? Oh yeah. Because it's Nolanite propaganda. Can't give a shout out to the competition
  8. Yeah... going up against Astérix in France would put it at a major disadvantage to any animated release.
  9. ...Why is Interstellar in the title for this? It doesn't come out until next week! I feel bad for the films coming out this week, they don't even get enough respect to not get their thread title hijacked by a movie that's not out yet.
  10. New review is up online but not on RT. Newsarama gives 10/10: Big Hero 6 is a movie that knows its audience, knows the zeitgeist of the modern sci-fi/comics scene, and brings this wisdom to bear in the form of an airtight script, breathtaking animation, and impossible charm. If Big Hero 6 does half as well as it deserves, it will be a strong proof of concept for Disney's Marvel animation model. http://www.newsarama.com/22601-big-hero-6-review-10-10-heir-to-both-the-incredibles-and-avengers.html
  11. Got my BH6 above WiR club up! Let's do this! (I'd do a BH6 above Intersteller OW but I'd probably get laughed at)
  12. I'm sure it won't last, but it's an encouraging sign!
  13. Anyone who is worried about Interstellar and BH6 opening the same weekend really shouldn't be. Their target audiences (if not their entire potential audiences) are completely different. No parent in their right mind would take their kid to see Interstellar. That's a great way to bore your child and torture the rest of the audience for three hours. And even those who elect to ditch the kiddies and go see Interstellar instead of BH6 are liable to go see BH6 eventually anyway. If anything, I think BH6 has a wider possible audience range than Intersteller for that very reason. Heck, it may even be able to pull the teen and young adult male crowd since it's a superhero movie about a robot, which would be a nice trick. OTOH, there is no way Intersteller is going to be pulling in the kiddy crowd. Different audience. It should do fine.
  14. Nah. The thing is... Disney OWNS Marvel. They can do whatever they want. If they wanted to slap Marvel's name on it, they could do it and the people at Marvel wouldn't be able to stop them. It was their decision to not play up the Marvel connection. I really think that Disney is underestimating its own animated movies lately. They haven't gotten as much promotion/hype as Pixar or Marvel.
  15. I hate to say this, but WiR had a more immediate pull because the trailers showed showed characters from actual popular video games (which had its own problem when people realised that their appearances only amounted to cameos). But don't let that discourage you! I think this has the potential to be leggier than WiR. It just needs good word of mouth and at least it shouldn't get that 'the big thing we went to see turned out to not be a factor' response from viewers.
  16. Hmm... is it too late to start one? I would have asked earlier but for some reason I kept thinking BH6 released closer to Thanksgiving.
  17. I'm so excited for this movie! And don't worry too much! This forum may not have a lot of activity, but I've heard quite a bit of GA talk about it around here.
  18. I've read this book and I actually quite enjoy a lot of it. To capture the feel and suspense of a zombie scenario in text is kind of hard for most authors, but Stephen King is good at playing suspense and tension (and human behaviour). It has an interesting take on the 'zombie/not-quite-zombie" scenario but it does derail slightly toward the end and kind of gets into WTF territory. It also has an ambiguous cut-off ending which is something King seems to like a lot in his work (ambiguous endings have become more common in movies lately though, which is probably why they changed the ending of The Mist, so I'm not sure what they'll do with this one. Cautiously optimistic, but Stephen King horror adaptations tend to be more miss than hit. Now just awaiting word on a new IT adaptation... a 6 hour miniseries would probably work better for that than a movie though.
  19. Guardians had a good hold, though it should finally drop from the top ten next weekend. I wonder, given the drops, whether it'll be above DT2 next weekend though. It's had a bit better holds than Dolphin 2. Also wow... AWotT and No Good Deed both had some steep drops this weekend.
  20. I'm actually thinking that Alexander will open pretty well. They put a lot of focus on Steve Carell in the previews I've seen and I know a lot of people who are fans of his. They're not playing up the kiddy aspect of the movie too much in trailers and I think that combination is going to draw in people who are fans of Carell's normal goofball stuff. At the very least it shouldn't be too off-putting to parents like some kiddy fare. And he has shown he can do kid-friendly comedy successfully. Despicable Me did very well and the sequel blew its predecessor's take way out of the water (Fourth Highest animated film, third highest box office of 2013). I'm not much for live action family stuff, but I'm going to give this one the benefit of the doubt where box office take is concerned. That said, I really hope it doesn't knock Book of Life flat. I think the two movies will have different secondary audiences (though they both obviously share the kiddie demographic).
  21. I talk to a lot of people who haven't heard of it... Then again, if it's like Inception, it may benefit from people going to see it extra times to try and figure out what the hell is going on.
  22. They marketed the hell out of Rocket and Groot for this release. One thing that the Japanese definitely don't seem to mind is oddball characters.
