The numbers are certainly small and not particularly exciting on their own, but the box-office is having its figures reported again and last weekend saw major increases (albeit still small numbers). This all came a few weeks earlier than I was anticipating.
  2. I started watching Foreign films and already have one for you to consider: wonderful film, I should see more from Kusturica before the deadline.
  3. I made a preliminary list and found 79 foreign films that I like. But with half of them being Japanese, I really need to catch up on other foreign films.
  4. My number 1 placement last time wasn't enough to get it in to the top 100 last time, so i'll try again now. FYC:
  5. Wow Panda, this an incredible amount of work you put into this, great job. As for the films themselves, I thought The Lion In Winter was a monotonous couple of hours of endless shouting at each other, which for me made the film incredibly boring. Lincoln on the other hand, even though it didn't make my list, is very good (but takes places in the 19th century and not the 18th).

  7. Glad that Winter Soldier is the highest ranking MCU film on the list, but also that it isn't crazily high on it either.
  8. Weekend Ranking (Admissions): 04/11-1201 (01) Birds of Prey (Warner Bros.) Week 4 02 (02) Not Quite Dead (Shochiku) Week 4 03 (03) Parasite (Bitter's End) Week 14 04 (06) Fukushima 50 (Shochiku) Week 6 05 (05) Howling Village (Toei) Week 10 06 (04) Mask Ward (Warner Bros.) Week 6 07 (07) Yayoi, March: 30 Years That I Loved You (Toho) Week 4 08 (09) Midsommar (Phantom Film) Week 8 09 (08) Psycho Pass 3 - First Inspector (Toho Video Division) Week 3 10 (12) Captive State (Kino Films) Week 2Here's the past Weekend's Top 10 ranked by admissions. As per the usual, no weekend figures were released this week due to theaters being closed in Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures (which were also apart of the state of emergency declaration last Tuesday), which account for 80% of the national box-office. And when you take into account that some other theaters across the country have also closed, the box-office is down over 90%. And for the first time, no cumulative totals were reported this week either. Everything is earning peanuts at this point though, so their totals are barely moving at this point, so it's not a total surprise.
  9. Weekend Ranking (Admissions): 04/04-0501 (02) Birds of Prey (Warner Bros.) Week 3 02 (01) Not Quite Dead (Shochiku) Week 3 03 (04) Parasite (Bitter's End) Week 13 04 (03) Mask Ward (Warner Bros.) Week 5 05 (07) Howling Village (Toei) Week 9 06 (05) Fukushima 50 (Shochiku) Week 5 07 (06) Yayoi, March: 30 Years That I Loved You (Toho) Week 3 08 (08) Psycho Pass 3 - First Inspector (Toho Video Division) WK2 09 (10) Midsommar (Phantom Film) Week 7 10 (11) Mishima Yukio vs. Tokyo University (Gaga) Week 3Here's the past Weekend's Top 10 ranked by admissions. Once again, and unsurprisingly especially now with the stay-at-home order, no weekend figures were released. This weekend is down 90% compared to the same weekend last year, and the box-office is down a projected 63-75%, higher than the reported 55-60% range from last week. Goes to show just how much the box-office really depends on Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures. Here are the reported cumulative totals, though, which are still be reported, just sparingly and kind of randomly:Reported Cumulative Totals (As of 04/05):¥4,580,000,000 ($42.0 million) / 3,300,000 admissions - Parasite (Bitter's End) 87 Days in Release ¥1,360,000,000 ($12.5 million) / 1,080,000 admissions - Howling Village (Toei) 59 Days in Release ¥740,000,000 ($6.8 million) / 565,000 admissions - Fukushima 50 (Shochiku) 31 Days in Release ¥700,000,000 ($6.4 million) / 550,000 admissions - Mask Ward (Warner Bros.) 31 Days in Release ¥600,000,000 ($5.5 million) / 440,000 admissions - Midsommar (Phantom Film) 45 Days in ReleaseParasite might be able to challenge some records for time spent in the Top 5/10 (it has never left the top 5) if this mess would continue past May/into June. Of course, the validity of such a high ranking/record if it occurs under these circumstances comes into question.
  10. They haven't been mentioned here, but am I correct in assuming that The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and Once Upon a Time in the West qualify?
  11. Weekend Ranking (Admissions): 03/28-2901 (02) Not Quite Dead (Shochiku) Week 2 02 (01) Birds of Prey (Warner Bros.) Week 2 03 (05) Mask Ward (Warner Bros.) Week 4 04 (04) Parasite (Bitter's End) Week 12 05 (03) Fukushima 50 (Shochiku) Week 4 06 (06) Yayoi, March: 30 Years That I Loved You (Toho) Week 2 07 (10) Howling Village (Toei) Week 808 (---) Psycho Pass 3 - First Inspector (Toho Video Division) NEW 09 (09) Stolen Identity 2 (Toho) Week 6 10 (08) Midsommar (Phantom Film) Week 6Here's last weekend's Top 10, ranked by admissions. No weekend figures were released. I don't know if weekend figures will remain unreported while theaters in Tokyo and surrounding prefectures are closed, or if this weekend was just a one-time instance since it was the first weekend with so many theaters closed. As a result of these theaters closed, the box-office is reportedly down 55-60%.However, numbers are still being recorded despite no weekend figures being released, as some select cumulative totals were reported, so here they are below:Reported Cumulative Totals (As of 03/29):¥1,316,616,900 ($12.1 million) / 1,015,160 admissions - Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku (Toho) 52 Days in Release ¥1,127,550,300 ($10.5 million) / 867,294 admissions - Stolen Identity 2 (Toho) 38 Days in Release ¥728,000,000 ($6.7 million) / 558,000 admissions - Fukushima 50 (Shochiku) 24 Days in Release ¥665,840,600 ($6.1 million) / 527,436 admissions - Mask Ward (Warner Bros.) 24 Days in Release ¥389,116,100 ($3.6 million) / 264,986 admissions - Birds of Prey (Warner Bros.) 10 Days in Release ¥350,000,000 ($3.3 million) / 248,000 admissions - Not Quite Dead (Shochiku) 10 Days in ReleaseAgain, this might just be a one-time thing, but I do expect the next couple weeks to probably be like this. Still, I'll update what's available.
  12. I have seen a total of 433 films for the decade, here's the top 100 of those:
  13. When I think of telling the story of a period of time and place, there is one film that I think stands above the rest, and that is Doctor Zhivago. Zhivago does a brilliant job of telling the story of the communist revolution and its effect on various characters. I know it's a long film, but I hope everyone everyone submitting a list gives it a chance.
  14. As usual, I will submit the list in the last moment to give me a chance to see more films.

While certainly hindered by the slower business at the box-office, this is still a decent opening weekend all things considered. It's NOT the worst opening for a DC film. I'll post the Marvel/DC Opening Weekend Chart later to show where it landed. >Not Quite Dead settled for a second place start, selling 67,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 333 screens; it sold 108,000 admissions over its first three-days in release. Not a particularly good start, but it's alright since it would have broke ¥100 million under normal circumstances. >Parasite is still going strong in its eleventh-weekend of release, and has exceeded 3.2 million admissions now. Honestly, it's probably going to be around posting decent numbers for several more weeks, so I wouldn't completely rule out ¥5 billion ($45 million+) yet. It very likely would have hit the blockbuster milestone prior to COVID-19, but it may very well get there anyway. >Yayoi, March: 30 Years That I Loved You bombed, though one has to factor in how much the COVID-19 could be affecting certain films before declaring flat-out bombs right now. Its weekend admissions weren't released, but it sold 54,907 admissions over its first three-days in release. This weekend was easily among the weakest ever for the start of Spring Break weekend (typically one of the strongest weekends every year outside of Summer), but the box-office is still doing pretty well in the absence of the event films (Doraemon, Onward, Sonic, and Precure) being postponed. And this weekend, while very low, still isn't near any record lows and isn't even the weakest in the past five years.

  17. From Corpse: It was originally slated for April 10th, but moved back to May 22nd. All domestic sites still have it listed for the May 22nd date. Unless things suddenly worsen, it should open on that day. Japan never saw the uptick or explosion in cases like just about everywhere else. They're not out of the clear yet, but since we're nearing April, things are looking good.

Everything is holding very well now, so I imagine things will improve and get "back to normal" next month when some bigger films open. Other than Mulan (now opening May 22nd), none of the other big April films like Detective Conan have been postponed. This upcoming weekend has a couple notable films opening, not event films, but they did decently on Friday. Birds of Prey will open above ¥100 million, maybe ¥150 million, to prevent the weekend from having a sub-¥100 million #1 film. And Not Quite Dead may approach/exceed ¥100 million as well. And to finish off the month of March, Fate/stay night - Heaven's Feel III - Spring Song will likely do ¥300/400 million net week.

WK8Another dull weekend, but that's unsurprising given the Coronavirus' effect having a more noticeable impact, although the adult-driven films are still performing decently and not far from regular levels. Also, the first weekend of March is when Doraemon always opens to kick-start the box-office and begin the Spring box-office season, alas, it was delayed due to the virus since it's an event film, one that targets almost exclusively families and children. >Fukushima 50 did alright, but given it skewing quite older, came in below its expectations prior to the Coronavirus. Films skewing too old (seniors) are also see the impact since seniors/elders are a vulnerable demographic. Still, it did okay as I said, selling 106,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 357 screens; it sold 146,000 over its first three-days in release. If I had to guess, its three-day opening probably would have equated to its opening weekend under normal circumstances. >Mask Ward narrowly claimed the second place in its debut, selling 77,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 326 screens; it sold 112,728 admissions over its first three-days in release. Again, while not as impact by the Coronavirus as much as Fukushima 50 likely was, it, too, probably suffered a bit. >Parasite was finally dethroned, but it's still holding well, and one can just imagine how much it's being limited now due to the Coronavirus hindering its incredible performance. It'll probably finish around ¥4.5 billion ($42/43 million), but if things improve come April, I could see it gaining traction and push toward the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) milestone where it was headed. Nothing else to really analyse this weekend. Films that are attracting families, children, and elders are suffering the most from the Coronavirus due to being susceptible demographics (and some theaters are restricting admission to children, too), while films targeting adults (think 25-50-year-olds) are still performing pretty well, but are also feeling the impact a bit too.Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur wasn't the only film to be delayed this month, so was Onward and Sonic the Hedgehog, and all three are postponed until further notice without a release date. So while March is often one of the more exciting months to follow the Japan box-office, it's not going to be very interesting this year. Here's hoping things improve come April, or at least before the Summer season.
