  1. The Secret Life of Pets 8.2 The Lost Tomb 8.5 Sword Master 8.9 The Warriors Gate 8.12 Call of Heroes 8.18 A Chinese Odyssey3 8.19 So August is going to be HUGE!
  2. Mulan is Chinese. Disney should be very careful. If Mulan turns out to be white actress... Next Fri openers are action/martial art movies with no big name stars. I'm sure it won't have big OW. It needs good wom to carry its leg. Only Super Bodyguard is in my list. This year, Chinese TV series is more impressive than movie tbh.
  3. I don't like gangster movie unless my fav movie star was cast. But those 6 big guys are really something. It even casts Chow Yun Fat as the supporting role. That's huge.
  4. Actually, Book of Love isn't a sequel. It's a different version of Finding Mr. Right. It just has the same OTP. But it's not as sweet as the first one. There is no romance between the two main lead. They just meet each other at the last minute of the movie but it's still worth watching. Agree! Tang Wei's acting is superb. Not to mention Wu Xiubo. Talking to Never Gone, I maybe bias to the cast but it really looks so sweet and warming. It's definitely more attractive to young audiences.
  5. I did expect 400M+ for Bounty Hunters. Now, it's dead. Its original release date is June.8 but due to afraid of Gul'dan, it's moved to July.1. Unfortunately, TMNT 2 released on July.2. Looks like no matter where it moved to, it couldn't escape "underperforming". Poor Lee Min Ho! Audience seems not attract to China-Korea co-production. Miss Granny is still the highest grossing C-K movie. The Chinese remake of Veteran, Architecture 101, and the movie version of super hit K-drama "Descendants of the Sun" will release next year. Hope it'll do well. I really wish China will remake "Welcome to Dongmakgol". That's a good comedy movie.
  6. I'm a bit more optimistic since local movie usually doesn't have high PS. Book of Love, with decent wom, broke 112M OD, 120M (Sat) and 117M Sun. 349M OW and 786M total. Consider that CA3 opened on its 2nd weekend. Never Gone should has better wom than BoF imo. At least it'll have bigger OW. Anyway, Big Fish is the biggest thing for me. Hope it'll do well.
  7. The animated version of Huan Zhu Ge Ge is a movie, should be a big budget one. As long as the movie is good, I don't think that scandal can affect it much. Wu Yifan is just a new rising star in this past 2 years. His name isn't that big. Not his fan but not hater too. That scandal is nothing tbh. Ask for Liu Yifei, yes I agree! her beauty is much more than her acting skill. So Young 2 will be her highest box office.
  8. I got goosebumps while reading the title Huan Zhu Ge Ge. This was the biggest hit in Asia at that time and one of my fav drama of all time. Little Swallow is super adorable. Good news, this hit drama will be adapted to animated version and directed by its female lead, Zhao Wei. The production can't find any actress who can perform little swallow as good as Zhao Wei, so they decided to make it into cartoon. Maybe 2017. Anyway, her movie "No Other Love", Yuan Quan as the female lead, just finished filming and into post-production. This is her second time as director. Not sure about the release date but I'm sure it'll be a hit. Because Zhao Wei's So Young is a big hit so just titles the new film to So Young 2, it'll be a draw. Even both films were adapted from the same book, So Young 2 isn't a sequel to So Young. It's completely different director, actors and storyline. Anyway, I watched So Young 2's trailer and feel like it'll be a big hit too. Looks like it's a good warm-hearted movie. PS is huge too, beating Tang Wei's Book of Love is possible.
  9. Hope Big Fish can fly over 100M OD. It easily breaks OD and OW record for local animated film. Hope it'll be the next TMK.
  10. There will be 1-2 local blockbusters release every week until August.19, A Chinese Odyssey 3 is the last one. Import movies never released in summer in the past years. So it should do much better than before. When it comes to good release date, it's sure there will be more and more competitions. But when it comes to shitty release date... people just keep complaining that bc of this, their beloved movies didn't do well. Now, Fri OD and summer release, will it make big differences?
  11. I'm one of them but since it's Johny To's movie, I didn't expect it much. His movie has came out every year but look at his box office. Gangster...? Anyway, he has big budget project next year. Hope it'll do well.
  12. I do hope Bounty Hunters to do well. Looks like it won't. Damn! K-C movie always sucked at the bo. The top opener next week is Never Gone aka So Young 2. So Young made 700M+ 3 year ago. Not surprise! SY2 tops pre-sell number. HK movie is no longer big. Cold War 2 is even lower than Big Fish. I am being curious to see how Big Fish will perform next week. It finally comes out after waiting for more than 10 years. Can't deny it's so beautiful. If the plot is good, I'm sure it will breakout.
  13. Taking Asian celebrities as cameo/small role is the only thing that Hollywood can do for the whole Asian. Oh! wait! that's not for Asian. It's for Asian money. Even some original Asian roles were taken by white actors, so the way that they took Asian cele as cameo/unimportant role is more than enough. I won't surprise anymore if Mulan will be play by white actress. I'm being curious about The Great Wall.
  14. WC will end up 4.5x > its homeland. That's incredible. TF4, FF7,..., didn't make 2x. The WC's performance really is unbelievable. Wonder if someday there is a film that make 1B in China but do less than 100M in NA.
  15. That ID 2 is lower than previous expectation by far. I heard even 2B, lol. Alien is out-dated imo. I guess among this Fri 3 openers, Three maybe have best wom but definitely lowest box office.
  16. Surprise! Mermaid has its own thread here. Wonder will any film in NA top it? CW is the biggest movie now and it has just grossed $400M, still $100M+ lower than Mermaid.
  17. So this is beame American culture? I wonder has American watched foreign film? I do agree that dubbing isn't a good way but "subbing". It's the best way to watch foreign film. It's weird while the rest of the world is ok with that. It's Now u see me 2, not local movie.
  18. American is CLOSE-MINDED. It's not non-English speaking film is poor quality but THEY didn't welcome it on purpose. Thank to oversea audiences, who are open-minded, that make their film to reach BILLIONs dollar.
  19. Don't tell me even Batman does...Lol Wait!...200M from how many country? The most important thing in HLW's though now is how to please Chinese audiences. U can see so many Co-productions happen in recent year. Yes, that's a trend. China has 1B people more than America, and they aren't mature as American in term of movie taste. So the quality isn't a big thing. There is high chance for HLW to make money there more than their homeland. They just focus much more on Chinese. HLW can spends budget as much as they can to make high quality film to please American's taste but remember Mermaid only had $30M+ budget and made over $500M in China. People do everything for money. I'm sure they will get this point. Co-production won't work imo. The Great Wall will be flopped in NA. It's not a good idea to connect East and West into one storyline. Anyway, American treats Chinese taste like a shit, so anything relate to China won't do well there. I saw some American comments, they swore they will never watch Chinese movie in their life.
  20. U will see. One day even Captain America will speak Mandarin, Lol.
  21. Yes, Warcraft is American but Chinese money, Lol. It will make 3x more than its homeland from China alone. Sequel won't do well in NA, esp WC was treated like a shit there. If WC 2 will be made, it probably do nothing. So it's not weird if Warcraft 2 will be in Mandarin. As long as it do well in Mainland, who care about HK, Lol. I checked HK box office and wtf I can't find any HK movie from the top 10 movie of all time. Their taste is so weird. They won't love their local movie anymore. I'm speechless that U a the Apple of My Eyes is the highest grossing Chinese language. And it's Taiwanese film. What surprised me most is even mega hit TV drama "Nirvana in Fire" didn't do well there. Lol, HK!
  22. Jackie Chan: 'Warcraft' Success in China "Scares the Americans" Lol, the comment section is so fun to read.
  23. I'm not the one who can give the right answer to this question (and don't even dare to make prediction). When it comes to local movie, I think this sub-forum still need s.o who can make balance between HLW movie & local movie in term of knowledge. Anyway, as NP ge said it's still too early to make prediction. The movie's release date is still not clear 100% and some movies not yet give it. This is an early look : July. 1-July. 15, I'm sure it > last year. Bounty Hunters > The Monk Cold War 2 + So Young 2 + Edge of Innocence > Tiny Times 4 + Forever Young Big Fish + Rock Dog > Hero is Back Plus, it has TMNT 2 and the leg from ID 2. July.16-July.21, that's the thing : MH + JBM + TMK > all every this year movies release the same date July. 22-July.31, it should be more than OK Skiptrace + One night only + League of Gods should be big as expect. Note : Last July : MH 1651M JBM 1B TMK 740M TT4 485M Monk 400M FY 365M
