Horror and thriller films are doing exceptionally well this year. 'The Snowman' has amazingly outdone the opening weekend of both 'The Girl on the Train' (32,260 admissions) and 'Gone Girl' (55,449 admissions). The latter went on to 276.9K admissions, which is a tough feat to achieve for 'The Snowman'. Even a total just above 200K admissions would leave me satisfied. 'Blade Runner 2049' held relatively well, probably reflecting good word of mouth, and there is a possibility it will reach 100K admissions. 'It' dropped hard in the face of 'The Snowman'. The clown has a very comfortable lead in total admissions but I do wonder how close to it the snowman can actually get. Quiet openings in #4 and #5, small drops for a string of animated films lower down the chart. 'Despicable Me 3' is still on its way to beat 'Minions' and 'Finding Dory'. It will be interesting to see whether it can reach 300K admissions, becoming the 3rd 2017 film to do so.

Hi Quigley if DM3 crosses 300K, where will it rank among all-time animated films in Greece?

    Thx!

  4. My Little Pony: The Movie added $4.9m from 65 markets in its second weekend for a $10.6m. Jayson Thiessen’s film debuted in Russia on $1.2m on 1,182 screens. Norway and Finland generated $213,000 and $205,000, respectively. Germany is the top grossing market on $1.3m, followed by Russia, Poland on $1.1m, Mexico $856,000, and Brazil on $500,000. France and the UK will release the film this week. Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth and Liev Schreiber lend their voices to the film.

  5. DM3 at $21.2m, Cars at $9m. Both at the end of their runs.

Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel Ch.1 delivered an excellent debut (the biggest since August), selling a very impressive 247,507 admissions over the weekend on only 128 screens. The first film in the trilogy sold nearly 45% of its available weekend admissions. I'm sure there'll be a certain degree of frontloading here, but a total over ¥2 billion (~$20 million) is very likely.

War for the Planet of the Apes had a so-so debut in second place, selling 148,909 admissions over the weekend frame on 756 screens. And since opening on Friday, the third film in the Apes series sold 192,328 admissions. Its debut is down 4% compared to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but considering how it dropped in other established markets, I'd consider this debut "good". It'll probably exceed ¥1 billion with around ¥1.2/1.3 billion ($10/11 million).

Outrage Coda experienced a rather harsh second weekend drop, but its strong weekdays have propelled it near a ¥1 billion total already. It'll have to stabilize very soon though over the weekends to keep its hope of reaching ¥2 billion alive, but at the very least, it's still almost guaranteed to become the highest-grossing film in the Outrage franchise.

Ajin: Demi-Human exceeded the ¥1 billion milestone over the weekend, after three weeks in release. It's on course to exceed ¥1.5 billion ($13 million), perfectly solid for this time of year.

A Dog's Purpose continues to hold well, and its total in Japan will soon overtake Mexico's to become its second biggest international market (obviously behind China's mammoth total).

Love and Lies has yet to have its weekend figures released for some reason, but it debuted in 10th place so I'll leave its estimate here for now (I'll update when available).

DM3 joins Minions as the second non-Disney Company animated feature to land in the all-time animation top 5. The film is also just $4 million shy of overtaking Finding Dory for the no. 4 spot.

Here’s the worldwide box office for the top 10 all-time highest-grossing animated films (as of Sunday, October 8):
