  1. If they liked the PT more... I imagine that a stand-alone Obi-Wan film should do pretty well there, eh?
  2. So all in all... It should hit close to $200m, right? That is pretty awesome for a movie with a $40m budget. I hope this gets Mel Gibson back in the financial graces of Hollywood so he can direct more movies. I think he may be one of my favorite directors from the standpoint he really hasn't made/directed a dud yet.
  3. What are Japanese audiences saying about the movie? How is it compared to the rest of the franchise?
  4. Good number for Indonesia... I guess the real test is next week for Europe - if this first Chinese mega-pic can make its budget back or not.
  5. I'm sure they will add them as time goes on and the franchise expands beyond its Anglo-American roots. I wish Donnie Yen had been in the mainline series instead of just RO, but in time, I am sure they will add more Asian and Chinese actors. One issue is that unlike, say, the Marvel franchises, you're not going to see more than 1 movie a year be produced involving Star Wars, so the opportunities may be a little more limited as opposed to other series that have no cannon to follow, and may be able to have more movies.
  6. Using typical BO math, that would be correct. The one small thing that TGW has for it on re-couping is that Legendary/Wanda do own a TON of theaters in China, so the box office % may be a little bit better for them.. By how much, who knows. Its only earned about $30m OS excluding China, so it has to break out somewhere, and fast.. I don't see a South Korean release for it, and one would think they would be a favorable market to release in.
  7. I am absolutely excited to see Steven DeKnight get his shot in the big leagues. Spartacus is one of my favorite all-time TV shows... Brilliantly done by him. I hope this delivers like the first PacRim did.
  8. The production budget was unreal for TGW, and its probably going to pull a Warcraft in terms of where it makes its money. They paid Matt Damon a huge sum to be in the movie to be its cornerstone, and reviews are really mediocre for it.. Budget is somewhere between $150 - $200m. That is why a billion RMB is not close to what you'd want out of the film. I hope it does OK here in the states (I'll probably go see it), but I'd imagine it may only make $50 million here, or so.
  9. I think it ultimately depends on the Chinese economy. Movies are a luxury for any person, regardless of nation. So if the economy stagnates (as many economists argue concerning China), then you're going to see some issues with stagnation from time to time. I am sure that we'll see high growth in a year or two, as long as the Chinese economy doesn't collapse.
  10. I am shocked Hacksaw Ridge almost has surpassed its US gross in China.. I hope they enjoyed the movie as much as I did.
  11. Does North Korea even have anything like a film industry that doesn't resolve to propaganda garbage? Having said that, I am surprised that they didn't at least import Train to Busan this year.
  12. ban1o: You say that "As long as you're white and male" you can have a fall from grace and come back up top. Can you give us an example of a black, hispanic, or female that did something equally as bad but was never given a chance to redeem themselves in Hollywood? Because you're making an assumption about something without providing an example to back up your claim.
  13. It portrays the Japanese in a bad light, which the Chinese like. Its also a pretty well-rated movie in the US as well... Probably feels good (to Chinese audiences) to have a extremely well-done war movie.
  14. What is Hacksaw Ridge's OD multiplier? It has to be getting close to a record with this kind of crazy run.
  15. So audiences don't like Time Raiders? What's the next big movie up?
  16. What are the next big movies to drop in China? Feels like other than Warcraft and The Mermaid, this year has been kind of muted, which is strange given how great last year was.
  17. Interestingly enough, the director posted over at Reddit's box office forum, asking people what they thought their projection was for the movie.
  18. How in the world is NYSM2 having this kind of run? Seems like an unexpected hit. Its going to totally destroy its US run.
  19. How reliable/informative are Gewara's user review scores for movies? Warcraft just jumped up to 9.4 from 7.0 in reviews prior to release.
  20. When does Warcraft officially open in China? Does it have 1 more day if pre-sales left before launch, or is it different?
  21. Glad to see it may live up to some sort of great numbers... Horror, much like hard-R action movies, are hard to come by that are any good. My wife loved the 1st one and I felt it was passable (like Urosepsis, I am not a fan of the genre, and he listed the same movies I felt were good - Saw, and CITW among other recent fare).
  22. Gewara had a nice increase on ticket sales.. Now up to 372,172 tickets sold.
  23. I believe Gewara OD ticket sales were at about 500,000 before FF7 opened up. Its currently sitting at ~330,000 with 6 days left.
