  1. I have a soft spot for well-written coming of age movies, so when I heard about this movie, naturally I had to watch it.

So, I liked the film, I thought it was a pretty good entry into the genre even though the romantic movie cliches were used often and the story was predictable, but really, there are 2 things that really set this movie apart --

    1. The acting, especially from the main protagonist.

    2. The sharp dialogue.

Hailee Steinfield is absolutely amazing, magnetic on screen, and I cannot wait to see more of her in movies to come. I do feel she was slightly miscast in this movie, however, as she doesn't look like a social "outcast" to me, but at the same time, that's just classic Hollywood casting at work here, movies of this genre are always subjected to this.

But boy, I might have to watch that 2010 True Grit remake now if that girl got oscar nominated for it. Easily the best performance I've seen in a coming of age film, and she's what... 18?

Mark that name folks! Hopefully she chooses her projects well in the future, because damn, talent like this, can't let it go to waste!

Verdict -- Overall B+ (A for the performances and dialogue alone)

    Lights Out (Tie)

    Directed by David S. Sanberg

    Starring:  Teresa Palmer, Maria Bello

    Box office:  148.8 million

This is the second of three Teresa Palmer films.  Besides her beauty, there's something intangible about her.  She commands the screen, imo, and it's no different in Lights Out.

Here's a film that started out as a you-tube sensation.  The short (you should check it out) film was one of the most watched short films on line.  It just kept getting more and more views until finally Hollywood took notice and gave it a big screen adaptation.  And it doesn't disappoint.  There's some really tense moments and enough jump scares to satisfy the horror crowd.  I liked the film a lot but I do think it could have been just a bit better and that's why it doesn't make my number one horror of the year.  But still a very good film.

The Director made an AMA on reddit, and is frequently active on /r/movies and even on /r/boxoffice as well!

He posts a lot, and answers people's questions.

    Very cool :)

Finally decided to check out the Rogue Cut, the 4.5 rating isn't for it. After all, the pacing is completely thrown off with silly asides or useless scenes. The Rogue stuff is interesting and entertaining, but unfortunately, this is more an extended cut than an actual Rogue cut. Worth checking out once, but I'll stick with the superior theatrical cut, which is still one of the best superhero films ever made.

  4. China just doesn't like Star Wars. We went all over this in 2015, it's happening again this year, and it's gonna happen again at the end of the year and the next as well.

Asian moviegoers in general don't like the visual style, the mythology, the characters... and the nostalgia has no effect on them, so that only leaves behind an average sci-fi flick, which is unsurprisingly getting average numbers to boot.

I doubt that changes in the near future, unless one of the "Star Wars stories" does something very differently that clicks with that audience. Not impossible.

    Mechanic Resurrection

    Directed by:  Some guy

Starring:  Jason Statham, Jessica Alba, Tommy Lee Jones

    Box office:  125 million

This is one of those films where you know exactly what you are and aren't going to get.  You aren't going to get endless dialogue or well developed characters.  Motive for actions might be a hair above a horror villian carrying out his revenge.  What you will get is beautiful people in little clothing, action with fists, feet and lots of people losing their lives, crazy stunts and a visual feast for the eyes.  Jason Statham does not disappoint here and for my money, he is my go to guy when it comes to action films.  He has charisma and he has the moves and the body and charm.  I could watch him kick someone in the face every day of the week.  Then you have Jessica Alba in a bikini and suddenly I can't remember the plot of this film.  Oh well.  Who cares?  This was a lot of fun.

I don't mind watching such a movie from time to time, how would say the fight choreography is in terms of quality? (not that Jessica Alba is ever boring to watch anyway)

Mind you, I love martial arts movies, my favorite fight sequences would include the likes of Donnie Yen vs Jet Li in Once Upon a Time in China, closely followed by Ziyi Zhang vs Michelle Leoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, everything Scott Adkins does in Ninja: Shadow of a Tear, Donnie Yen vs some guy in SPL Kill Zone, Jackie Chan in Drunken Master, and again Donnie Yen vs Jet Li in Hero (not a huge fan of wire work but it can work)

I don't expect fight choreography on this level but is it at least good?

    I don't exp
