Looks like Migration will bomb in Japan with less than $5 million final total. I was honestly expecting the Illumination name to propel it to at least $20 million.
Well... I'm not too surprised. Migration isn't performing as well in other places as well, not as well as the Sing or Despicable Me movies. DreamWorks, for instance, their movies mostly did not do well in Japan at all. Illumination's movies are just an exception.

Banning TikTok would be idiotic. Which means it's likely to happen. Also if I'm TikTok, I would refuse to sell to an American company.
Also, Biden signing the bill may be the end of his presidency.
Why would you refuse to sell? At that point it's just dumb. I don't know if TikTok is actually a national security risk or not but I also think it's not wise to spend political capital like this. But if it's just sold off people might not care.

RFK Jr. has had... quite the political journey since he was a darling of (some of) the left way back in 2004.
wait what was RFK Jr. doing back in 2004 that made people care about him?

Dune did not do well in Japan even in an environment where covid was fairly irrelevant so I'm not sure why anyone would expect any different.
That also does not surprise me

Actually kind of surprised that WALL E was #1 but it makes sense

Dune 2 will have a modest debut this weekend in Japan. Don't really know if it will be #1, but I guess IMAX will help the gross.

How Do You Live/Boy and the Heron has 33,427 seats on Mimorin this Friday. I guess that's enough to do some business...
Turning Red/Sometimes I'm a Red Panda has 12,005 seats and is in 25th place for seats. It mostly just has one showing for every location it has.
Fly/Migration has 130,309 seats.

Guess Howl's and The Wind Rises only lost because Were-Rabbit and Frozen were too influential to be ignored.
I don't know how either of those movies are influential tbh.

Is 60 - 70 million possible with this re-release in the USA? Don't know how much it can make!
Probably not. I think at most it could do another $5 million. Which would get it to $51 million.

My early picks
- INSIDE OUT 2 (Disney / Pixar / Kelsey Mann)
- THE MAGNIFICENT LIFE OF MARCEL PAGNOL (Sony Classics / Sylvain Chomet)
- PIECE BY PIECE (Focus Features / i am OTHER / Morgan Neville)
- SIROCCO AND THE KINGDOM OF THE WINDS (GKIDS / Sacrebleu / Benoit Chieux)
- THE WILD ROBOT (Universal / Dreamworks / Chris Sanders)
I've only heard of two of these movies. Well actually three of them. I forgot about the Piece by Piece thing. I'm very skeptical of the Lego documentary getting in. So yeah if you like animation outside the big name studios that make blockbusters, I guess this is the year for you

How wide is the release? I wonder if they can push it over ¥10 billion.
Maybe?

I could definitely tell there was a downgrade in production values from the budget

I thought it was kind of dumb how Zhen switched sides for like one scene and then turned back to Po's side again

I think Coco is easily the best Post- Toy Story 3 Pixar movie. I heard it was good, but I was amazed it was that great.
Inside Out, Soul, and Turning Red I think would be the main alternatives.

Early studio Fri projections, take at your own caution:
18.2-18.5 Panda
12.5ish Dune
3.8-4.0 Imaginary
that's a little disappointing for Dune 2 right? Now it can't make much more than $40 m 2nd weekend

The trailer looks pretty nice, I think people are generally going to like this movie. Maybe not as much as the first one, but still.

WDAS and Pixar need to find ways to bring down the budget of their animated films too. $200 million each is not sustainable with their current box office prospects.
The only way is outsourcing. They're also laying off a lot of people.
Still, history suggests that they won't cut costs. They didn't cut costs when Treasure Planet, Home on the Range were flops.Pixar itself is expecting Inside Out 2, which I think will be a very profitable movie. Then there's Elio, and then maybe some unknown movie in March 2026... Pixar's in a better position than WDAS but they might both be brought down.

Is the top 15 gonna be all Disney/Pixar animations or am I forgetting something.
Roger Rabbit has to make it in. Of course that itself is a partly animated movie.
