Netflix deserves a lot of the blame for this with their infiltration of the kids entertainment market coupled with their pathological aversion to movie theaters. Orion and the Dark could've been a solid enough family holdover releasing in early February. Also mind-bogglingly idiotic unforced error on Neon's part not taking advantage of Robot Dreams' Oscar buzz.

March had been looking pretty stacked a year ago, sadly both Elio and Spiderverse flew the coop. January does look like it'll have more going for it next year though with Paddington and Dogman.

Netflix is Netflix. The blame is primarily on Disney. Yes there was a pandemic but Luca and Turning Red did not have to be streaming exclusives.

This guy posted a picture of said pins later on in the thread as evidence. Personally I believe this. You don't push back a movie like this by 15 months unless something is seriously wrong with it and it needs to essentially be remade.

Well obviously there had to be an issue of some kind for it to be delayed. I wonder if Pete Docter is switching up his managerial style.

Disney would basically have to become Pure Flix at this point to address conservative animus. Their status as a symbol of family friendly entertainment that has gradually been shifting towards more inclusive ideals is inevitably gonna make them a target. As much vocal hate as they get, they really are better off in the long-term continuing on the path they are, they just have to improve at execution. You'll notice even now that the movie is available for free on YouTube, not much of a conservative outrage is being directed at Nimona.

Well I think that's mostly because very few people watched Nimona at all.

"Don't become the face of a culture war fight where you're on the 30% side of a 30/70 issue" would be the substantive advice I'd give but that's really not generalizable for multiple reasons.

OK so where do you get that 70% number from,

I'm actually a little surprised that the negative opinion on Disney from Conservatives is ONLY 30%. Though I don't know what specific issue you're talking about.

Okay, but... so what? Disney shouldn't do anything about this "problem" because there is no problem. I don't want Disney to cater to a crowd that thought two women kissing was why Lightyear failed (it wasn't).

There were issues before lightyear, like with the controversy over funding Florida politicians, and the tempest in a teapot Turning Red. Then there was strange world. I ultimately don't believe that these are fatal to Disney's brand. Elemental had a lot of these elements, such as references to same sex couples, and it had a 5x mutli from its OW.

Yeah I’ve been thinking for a minute it’s just gonna be Spider verse winning everything from now. Spirited Away just got lucky there wasn’t really an acclaimed American animation that year.

Still could have easily gone to Lilo & Stitch, but I mostly agree.

  7. I know it's not much, but Turning Red did better than estimates, with actuals 8% higher than estimates. It did very well on SuperBowl Sunday, only declining 49% while most movies declined more than 60%. I think it proves that Turning Red would have been good as counterprogramming back in March 2022 when it was originally scheduled to be in theaters.
