Just because you’re a popular singer doesn’t mean people want to go see you on the big screen especially when said movie has shitty reviews and consists of an adaptation of a play that already weirds people out. But that specific user has a weird tendency to always try and bring pop stars down in order to elevate Jlo when Jlo is successful on her own. I believe they tried that nonsense with A Star Is Born and Lady Gaga but unfortunately for them ASIB was a smash.

What went wrong? TROS faced stiff competition from Jumanji, Frozen, Bombshell and the biggest movie of them all: CATs. No movie can survive an onslaught of that kind of competition.

Thor 3 and Iron Man 3 beg to differ. If the sequel is well received all bets are off. The problem TROS has is that it’s not being well received either. I never said TLJ had no effect. I said it doesn’t explain the $50M drop off in the OW. If TROS was being well received with great reviews we’d be looking at a $200M+ OW. If TROS opened to say $205M with good reviews I’d be 100% on board with TLJ decreasing the OW. But by $50M when said sequel isn’t being received well? Yea sorry you can’t just blame that on TLJ.

No you’re right. I mistakenly wrote both Thor movies when it was just the sequel.

CATs looks to be a mini version of Last Christmas. Decent to stronger numbers OS but fell flat in the USA. Although CATs straight up bombed in the states whereas Last Christmas had a respectable total given its budget.

I say a lot of dumb stuff on this forum but I hope no one finds that post I made years ago where I said that a Star Wars movie would open to over $300M. The franchise has literally gone in the opposite direction since I made that post. I put the jinx on it

Honestly we are all fighting about TROS and the Star Wars franchise but this is a $95M movie that’s opening to $6.50M

I know I said I’d leave it at that BUT I do want to say that I don’t believe that TLJ being disliked by folks is only because of the mistreated characters. I just wanted to keep that post shorter and not make it in a wiki article about the reasons why people may have disliked it. And to keep this post short, what @pepsa said in their post on the other page is how I feel like about this topic. They actually summed up my thoughts and better articulated by thoughts for me lol But I hope you enjoy TROS Let me know how you like it!

I’d want to see how this week plays out and the second weekend drop to see where the legs for TROS are headed. I think it’s too soon to determine whether it’s beloved or disliked. But if it’s the latter then I’m not sure it can manage to get to $600M. It’ll probably fall between $500M-600M so then we can have another Star Wars movie to discuss for years about whether it was well received or not

I really have no eggs in the basket. I’m not a Star Wars fan. I’m not a TLJ fan. I’m actually getting a headache arguing with people over this so I’m leaving it alone. But as I keep saying regarding this topic: one “bad” film in a sea of very solid ones (TFA, Rogue One, Han Solo) is a reason to stop supporting a franchise. Okay then.

Apart from Age of Ultron, the rest of those films had a similar quality that was on par with the originals? That’s why I said had TROS been GOOD or on par quality wise with the movies that came before it, it wouldn’t be seeing the drop that it’s having.

I imagine Star Wars is like Marvel. It has its die hard fans and its casual fans. TLJ wasn’t a mess. It wasn’t BvS level of mess where the majority of folks hated it. It had a small minority of folks that hated it because of what Rian Johnson did to the characters or whatever. So I’d imagine that level of detail that’s upsetting a huge Star Wars fan would go over the head of a casual Star Wars fan anyways. The only way discussing TLJ would be awful is if you’re talking to a fan who understands the characters enough to know that Rian “messed” up.
