  1. Star Wars underperforming has really taken the spot light off this film being one of the biggest bombs of the year in every single aspect one could think of: critically, awards, box office, audience reception etc
  2. Something tells me you don’t know how the box office works this time of the year. That’s the only thing that explains this comment.
  3. Anecdotal but the 12PM showtime is sold out with fans having a popcorn party in the lobby to celebrate.
  4. How was it a cheap move? Anyone who understands how the box office works knows that wasn’t the Sunday number for Star Wars.
  5. I don’t think anyone is overreacting with these numbers. TROS is obviously not a bomb or a flop but it’s numbers should give people pause especially those who actually look at box office numbers ie people on this forum. Not only that, but it seems as a whole, the brand is decreasing. This is anecdotal of course (like BKB parking lot reports) but after the movies my friend and I went to Target cause she wanted to get her little brother hot wheels. I was shocked that there wasn’t a single section in the toy area dedicated to Star Wars. There was Disney Princess stuff, Avengers stuff, WWE and so forth but nothing Star Wars. A brand that currently has a movie in theaters had ZERO toys at this Target. So I walked around to see if they had any shirts or anything Star Wars related and found nothing. I don’t expect that to be a thing across all Targets of course but I also don’t think its normal for a big store like that to completely ignore one of the biggest brands in the world. To me it just adds another layer to the discussion regarding the Star Wars brand as a whole and shows that those of use discussing the decline of Star Wars aren’t exactly overreacting. And when I think about how Disney has handled this brand, to me it can be summed up by them withholding selling Baby Yoda’s because they didn’t want to ruin the “surprise.” Now that the surprise is out, the ship has sailed and the opportunity to make millions off Baby Yoda’s is gone.
  6. 24M is a much better number and puts $70M+ for the weekend back in play. But I do wonder about it’s prospects going forward. The holidays are pretty much over and this coming week some schools will start again. I really think even with a $70M+ weekend getting to $500M is going to be very hard. I remember during the OW some users mentioned that TROS would be in a better position than TLJ because of how the holidays lined up and it looks like that didn’t matter as once the holidays ended the numbers dropped. People who wanted to watch it, watched it and by the looks of it told others to stay away. Seeing how the holidays gave TROS a slight boost though, I do wonder how these movies would fare if they weren’t released during the holiday period. Would TROS still be making close to a billion or would that number be $800-900M instead? Cause that’s something else that hasn’t really been talked about. Yes TLJ made a billion. Yes TROS is looking to make a billion. But would have that been the case if they weren’t released during the holidays? And if not that’s something else Disney needs to consider going forward when they’re making these movies. The box office for these $300-$400M movies keeps decreasing even though they’re released during the holidays. So if I’m Disney, I start thinking about ways to scale back the budgets on these films because I don’t think they can continually rely on the holiday period to save them.
  7. Leave it to China for getting another franchise movie over the billion dollar mark. Unbelievable the way these Hollywood productions rely on that market these days
  8. “It’s several percentage points better than TLJ (65% vs 70%) with the pure numbers also being much better. TROS is in a great position to outgross TLJ at this rate.”
  9. He was only $10M or so off. Like hitting the outside of the dart board with blind fold on. Close enough!
  10. Thank you! I wasn’t sure how close it would be. I figured $70M was off with that Saturday though
  11. I had no idea about it. I remember AMC marketing theirs all over the place but I feel like Regal didn’t do that? I mean I just saw it cause I happened to go to a Regal theater lol
  12. Quick thoughts on Bombshell: The story is kinda all over the place in the beginning (it’s actually a mess without a clear focus) which ruins the movie a bit. But the second half is very solid and if the first half was more focused like the second, I’d imagine the response both critically and audience wise would be better. Second thing is Charlize and Nicole did such a great job portraying Megyn and Gretchen. Charlize even got the voice down pat which got me thinking about how god damn annoying Megyn Kelly’s voice is. Good lord how did people watch that woman speak? Margot Robbie also did a phenomenal job in her role. She’s imo the most talented actress with the most promise of her age group and it showed in this film. Overall I’d give the film a 6/10. It has very strong performances but the story in the beginning is all over the place which brought down the score. Side note: the scene with Geraldo Rivera and Sean Hannity got the theater cracking up.
  13. When did Regal come out with an unlimited pass? Unless it’s been around and this particular location recently implemented it?
  14. So I’m currently at the theaters and we just bought our tickets from the box office. My friend is choosing the movie. We were told Jumanji and Knives Out were sold out upon asking for seats. My friend goes “What’s bombshell?” The guy behind us “It’s about the Fox News lady.” Employee in the ticket booth “I think my girl friend is making me watch that later tonight.” My friend “Okay we are watching bombshell.” Thank you to the 50 something year old woman who was in front of us that picked to watch Bombshell because now that’s what my friend and I are watching.
  15. Omg. Now I get it. I was so confused. It was an odd comparison cause the two films had nothing in comparison. Not even their box office.
  16. TLJ had an effect on TROS OW. Not the 50 million drop imo but that was a discussion for the OW thread. But we aren’t gonna blame the legs of a movie on the movie before it. The Rise of the Skywalker being a not so good movie is why it’s legs aren’t looking too hot. Had it been good, its second weekend drop would be different. Sort of like how Wonder Woman being good was able to withstand the DC movie disasters that were BvS and Suicide Squad and pull a 4x multiplier.
  17. Not sure why he compared it to Ant Man when Hobbs and Shaw outgrossed both Ant-Man and it’s sequel....
