How about WOM?

Pre-sale of CNY movies was supposed to open on Jan.6 yesterday. But some distributors thought Detective Chinatown 3, which is the most anticipated local movie of this period even the whole year with highest want-to-see number on ticket site, would be the biggest winner with huge showtimes & strong pre-sale performance if the pre-sale start so soon. So these people suggested Film Bureau to push the pre-sale back to Jan.17 with the reason of "prevent unfair competition". Film Bureau thought it is not quite unreasonable and agreed. And now, DC3 will lose its advantages. Every marketing team and filmmakers said in public that they will be nice when they compete with each other, but we all know there is no difference between this one & the "Awards season" in western world.

2019 Top Grossers International Thread.

Wandering Earth & Ne Zha have nothing special but the name of the first Chinese sci-fi/animated event movie. Outside China, few people can enjoy it so much. Wu Jing has been famous in HK for years, but people there don't wanna see him any more since he played wolf warrior, a nationalism character. Wandering Earth only made $40k on opening day in HK. Films like Ip Man are more special in China because the major position in the cast & crew are from HK. Many audience in mainland China love HK movies from last century, and see Ip Man 4 not just Chinese but also HK movie. Studios usually release both Cantonese & Mandarin versions for HK movies. The formal is for HK and many of areas in mainland China(depend on audience). The latter is the official language in mainland. These HK movies can do better in HK, but most HK people don't have much interest in them for years. -

One of the reasons is there are huge differences of opinion about value between mainland China and HK+TW. Chinese people didn't have many chances to know western until reform and opening in 80s. The first major Hollywood film opened in mainland China is Harrison Ford's The Fugitive in 1994. But HK & TW people have long-term exposed western cultures & been highly disdainful of things under the control of the Communist Party of China. Most great HK & TW filmmakers in recent years came to mainland China & worked for local studios. Their reputation based on early careers can helped them to earn enormous wealth they might never own in HK & TW. HK & TW almost lost its own film industries & markets. Huge audience in mainland China never see Hollywood films(at least not in theaters). They really can't understand what good advantages Hollywood have. They believe Chinese blockbusters are the best from the heart. -
