I'm kind of irked Minding the Gap isn't the obvious frontrunner in documentary based simply on how good it is. It should be that category's Spider-Verse.
If someone's reaction to The Favourite or Roma winning is eyeroll rather than "ok, it's their choice" and/or "interesting, I should check that out" it's their problem. That would show a clearer snobbery from that person towards non-mainstream cinema than it would from the Academy towards blockbusters.
One could say the same for dozens if not hundreds of movies that have been nominated in the history of Oscars.
... so what other movies *should* it go to? Sure, we all have our ideal Best Picture line-ups in our heads, but at the end of the day we aren't the Academy and you could do so much worse than nominating what's universally acclaimed.
No reason to make a movie now if it's not gonna win him Best Director and not enough time has passed yet, gotta take a decade off before making a run at John Ford's record.
I could get being mad about Black Panther's nod if the other seven contenders were all acclaimed as immaculate all-time masterpieces but like it's better at being a superhero movie than half the other nominees are at being what they are.
I was a very outside observer but Moviepass seemed to bolster moviegoing for smaller films for a few months in 2018, no? You need to get a system like that to work stable and long-term.
