  1. None of the year's best performances got nominated though so whatever. I'd pick Close over Gaga and Aparicio at least, and I don't think she's that far behind McCarthy and Colman.
  2. 26m looks doable to me. It's looking at a weekend over 5m and a near 22m cume after Sunday. And next weekend's quiet will be good for it.
  3. Gonna be a one-off screening of Beale Street here on the 6th so that deadline's just fine by me
  4. A Netflix movie merely being nominated for 10 Oscars but not winning the biggest one ain't gonna teach mass amounts of people any lessons about the importance of theatrical moviegoing, and it's not the Academy's job to do that anyway. And quit thinking like "the general audience" is some amorphous mass that's gonna see Roma win Best Picture and be like "well that's it! we're watching nothing in theaters next year other than Avengers 14, Star Wars 20, the live-action Song of the South and Detective Pikachu: The Search for More Money!" That's not how the world works man.
  5. I haven't cared about any of these movies since Alice in Wonderland but if Stone brings some of that The Favourite nastiness to this I'm game.
  6. What is it with the line-drawing? What does it serve? You think Roma is the best of the nominees, vote for it. End of story. Nothing else should matter.
  7. Given their hard-on for biopic performances they probably just saw that it was one and were like "great, no further questions"
  8. I remember it was supposed to be down to 1,264 theaters last week. That was the number on the theater counts page. Dunno why it was backtracked after the weekend numbers came in. Bumblebee's numbers are fishy too. Why would it have lost just 188 theaters last week, with its weekend PTA already below 1k?
  9. Came back from Vice. Not sure I've ever seen a movie undermine itself so much while pointing out so many basically right things. I sympathize with and even share the anger here, but why the fuck turn a genuine horror story into this huffing and puffing open mic routine? Thankfully it calms down in the Iraq War section, which is properly chilling, but by then it's much too late. And Bale is very good but Adams' repetitive Lady Macbeth act preceded by the earnest "Dewey Cox, I am your 12-year-old girlfriend!" stuff is some of the most thankless shit she ever got to play.
  10. Johnson been posting lots of classic whodunit posters on twitter. Might make for a fun marathon in anticipation of this.
  11. I will not hear any Boy Next Door slander. That thing is a trash masterpiece
  12. that's cuz it's all in the Telegram chat now.
  13. When he was alive Bowie turned down directors who wanted to make that movie more than once. Which, good for him. There's no shortage of footage of him out there, anyway, why'd you ever wanna watch some asshole try and do an impression of him for two hours while some chunk of his life gets turned into a formulaic narrative?
  14. Larson wanting a diverse press junket I think is laudable. Her comment about A Wrinkle in Time "I don't care what a middle-aged white male film critic thinks about it because it wasn't made for him" I saw quoted in the CM thread a while back I think is kinda unnecessarily presumptious and, let's say, unproductive (the second part especially). She's also a talented and charismatic (when the material allows it) actress! In conclusion, people contain multitudes
  15. in fairness Fallout is the 2018 movie that rips off Nolan's style the most so leave it to BOT to fall for that.
