  1. @cayommagazine Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg (Netflix’s Big Mouth, Human Resources) have been hired to write and direct the third WhatAToon film, after McGruber’s Agents of CHANGE and Sugar’s My Island. The studio says the film will be a hard R. The film is reportedly titled Toxic and will be the studio’s first musical while tackling toxic masculinity. Andrew Rannells (Book Of Mormon, Big Mouth) will voice the male lead.
  2. @cayommagazine Endless Animation goes bonkers for originals. As the studio nears it 5 year anniversary, as Gateways, the studio’s first all original film and Mario look more likely for critical success, Endless Animation CEO Chris McKay announces the studio is aiming for a 2:1 ratio from original’s to sequels. Meaning for every sequel a year, two originals will be made alongside it. McKay says “While they’re definitely worlds we want to explore again, it is important for a diversifying industry to breathe in new stories.” The slate of originals are as following: Scorching Saddles - September Y7 Described as a western Kung Fu Panda, the story takes place in the old west which is full of anthropomorphic equine and cevidae, mainly deer, horses, donkeys and zebras. Enter the story of Birch Bronco, (Shamiek Moore), a cocky and full of himself traveling musician brown horse armed with his trusty guitar heads to the town of Roca de Pequeña for a family reunion with his estranged father, the legendary cowboy/sheriff of the town Bill Bronco (Samuel L Jackson) at the urging of his mother. However, when things take a turn for the worse, with dangerous outlaw Pecos (Billy Bob Thornton). Bill must train Birch to defend Roca de Pequena, as some much needed father/son bonding with personality clashes. The film is written by Thurop Van Orman (The Angry Birds Movie 2), Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger (Kung Fu Panda trilogy, Trolls) as Orman directs. The film will be computer animation but uses traditional animated backgrounds. Toons V Reality will take a spot summer Y8 as the story, cast and crew stay the same as Chris McKay directs a script from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller Untitled Caribbean Animated Musical - Holiday Y8 This pitch was by Xavier B Irving, a Bajan descendant wanting to do a movie based on Caribbean culture had a meeting with Disney veteran Josie Trinidad and Selma writer/director Ava DuVernay to help develop the idea. DuVernay and Trinidad will both direct the project in a script from both of them. Described as a fusion of Black Panther and Moana, tells the tale of young princess Zora (Shahidi Wright Joseph), blesses with the gift of the Phoenix, one of the four elemental spirits of the land and her twin brother, Chad (JD McCracy) journeys with the spider trickster god Anansi (Leslie Jones) to stop a war at home. With music from newcomer Anaïs Mitchell (Hadestown) will compose the film and Lin Manuel Miranda (Moana, Hamilton) will write the songs. The film will be the first fully traditionally animated film from Endless Animation. Peter Del Vecho (The Princess and The Frog, Frozen), Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into The Spider Verse) and Rebecca Sugar (Academy Award winner Notes From The Otherspace, Academy Award winner Can You Imagine?) will produce as the heads on Endless Animation Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie, Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive) and Meg LeFauve (Medusa, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl) and Endless Entertainment CEO Xavier B. Irving will executive produce. Newcomer Anaïs Mitchell (Hadestown) will compose the film and Lin Manuel Miranda (Moana, Hamilton) will write the songs. Olivia Wilde’s (Booksmart, Thirsty) social satire cellphone comedy AVA will debut Q1 Y9 and fantasy from Peter Ramsey Antonius will debut Q4 Y9. Y10 will see the studio’s first PG-13 film, despite WhatAToon making PG-13/R rated animated, Meg LeFauve says “Our studios have taken to heart the motto “Animation is a medium, not a genre”. While WhatAToon tackles more social issues, details are scarce for this one, but Niki Caro (Lumberjanes, Mulan) will direct the project, which involves a samurai epic, dubbed The Way of The Sword.
  3. The grosses for most of them seem fair, it’s the multipliers that are off. Apart from Bunny, none of them should go under a 2x multiple. Like for example Bull and Dirty for instant.
  4. Facepaint A bizarre little horror movie, not so much scary as it is weird but hey I dug it for what it was. C+ Double Chronomance This is the lesser version of Marked Up Time. Despite inspired casting and the occasional good joke, this comedy provides confusing rules on time travel, as the romances aren’t solid nor are the jokes C-
  5. May Mass Effect: Ascension: $127.8M/$343.7M Brickleberry: Armoogeddon: $12.3M/$26.6M Facepaint: $27.3M/$71.2M Lumberjanes: $55.5M/$235.8M Green Arrow: $53.4M/$68.9M/$163.9M Double Chronomance: $17.6M/$23.7M/$59.3M
  6. Also is it just me or has September animation/family films been doing bad recently, when it used to be a major opportunity spot. Cloudy 1 and 2, as well as the first two Hotel Transylvania dominated. Hell Open Season adjusts over $100M. Storks, Lego Ninjago, Smallfoot and now Abominable are all under $85M. I wonder if the damage of Netflix to the theatrical animation business as well as more bloated summer for family films in general is hurting and the marketing has taken a turn for the worse.
  7. @cayommagazine Attached to Super Mario Bros.

The Mario spin-off is reported to be some sort of musical mixing in old songs such as “I Will Survive” and “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” as well as 2 original songs by Jon Lajoie (The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part). The spin-off is written by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (Crazy Stupid Love) and directed by Matt Braly (Disney’s Amphibia) and Trisha Gumm (The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part). 9. April The Pixies in The Garden A small and inoffensive but uneventful family film. Should be a good matinee but kids over 10 will zone out. C Jane and Tony A rather dull drama, which kind of pisses me off as the movie seems to have a male savior angle. D+ The Thin, The Phat and The Felon A step up from Y5’s Miserable Fans, as Wright manages to put in just enough charm, wit and humor to make a good comedy with fun leads. My problem though is Martin go a bit unlikeable and annoying near the end. B/B+ The Blushing Another zombie film that feels much like the zombies themselves: dull C- Nights Into Dreams Another family film that’s fine at a glance but is rather predictable and despite the vast array of potential for the dream worlds shown is somewhat unimaginative. C-
  10. @cayommagazine Shamiek Moore Samuel L Jackson Lana Condor Billy Bob Thornton Storm Reid Jack Black Mark Hamill Samantha Ireland Time to head west. Y7.
