Disney/Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 has rocketed to $732.6Mglobal, becoming the 6th highest-grossing MCU release of all time. At the international box office, it recorded another $28M in 57 markets this weekend to take the total to $430.8M. It is now 19% ahead of the entire previous offshore run of GOTG at today’s FX rates.
In its 4th frame, the James Gunn-helmed sequel had good holds in many markets including Chile (-19%), France (-22%), Norway (-25%), Belgium (-25%), Australia (-28%), Netherlands (-32%), Switzerland (-33%), Malaysia (-33%), Mexico (-38%), Argentina (-39%), Germany (-39%), the UK (-39%), Japan (-39%), Brazil (-41%) and Spain (-41%).
When looking at like-for-like markets, the drop-off was 46% from last frame. IMAX play was good for $5M on 883 screens worldwide. That lifts the total in the format to $55M to make it the 2nd movie to cross $50M for IMAX this year.
China is still the top hub overall with $94.2M (650M RMB), passing the entire run of GOTG1in local currency. The UK ($47M), Russia ($26M), Germany ($25.5M) and Australia ($22.2M) round out the Top 5.
Adding to titles GOTG2 has surpassed internationally, it’s now topped Logan ($381M), Deadpool ($420M) and Suicide Squad ($421M). Globally, it’s beaten Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714M), Doctor Strange ($678M) and Thor: The Dark World ($645M).
