  1. Could be. I assume every user with 1 post is a shivampa until proven otherwise. That's what happens I guess. Fool me once, fool me twice and all that.
  2. The thing about Disney, when they do come out with original stuff it comes off like they're still doing franchise filmmaking. I wish they would one-off comedies or dramas like other studios. Just one-off movies.
  3. All I know is the alternative to rooting for Disney is...not rooting for them. Why would I do that? I root for every studio. I want cinema to succeed. Hell, I just want cinema to survive!
  4. The way you have to look at it is, no matter how they're doing it, they're the ones bringing in most of the revenue at the box office. We can't just assume that if Disney weren't doing what they're doing that other studios' films would pick up the slack. Disposable income for everyone outside the upper class is shrinking all the time as the wealth gets more and more unevenly distributed, and movie-going has been one of the prime casualties. This means that most people are going to be selective with what they see and right now, like it or not, Disney is offering most people's first choice.
  5. Yeah the box office was definitely bigger for the animated Aladdin. I mean either way you're right: Disney fucked up the marketing for Aladdin. Looks like they had a crowd pleaser on their hands that did anything but before it was actually released in theatres.
  6. You think so? I always got the feeling BatB was bigger than Aladdin. Might just be anecdotal though.
  7. This is it. Inflation and the rise of the franchise have enabled box office records aplenty to go down. It just so happens that weekend isn't as prolific as it once was, whether it be the movies released on that weekend or the weekend itself. Who knows? Presidents' Day weekend may be the new Memorial Day weekend. As movie-going in general decreases, people might be finding other other options for entertainment on long weekends during the nicer times of year (Memorial Day weekend, Independence Day weekend etc.), whereas before going to the movies was one of the go-to activities on those weekends. Now, take a weekend like Presidents' Day weekend in February, it's dead in the middle of winter and a movie seems like much more of a go-to entertainment option.
  8. Everyone pay very close attention to the wording of Charlie's post: he says this is the BEST CASE SCENARIO. This isn't his official estimate. Clarifying this so nobody's harrassing him, telling him "B-b-but you said $95M 3-day and $119M 4-day"!
  9. There was really nowhere to put this, to be honest. The summer is just too crowded. It'll make its money though.
  10. Deadpool 2 and Alien: Covenant, both released on the same day as John Wick: Chapter 3 in 2018 and 2017 respectively, also dropped between 60 and 70% (for the 3-day). There's a precedent for this.
  11. How does Deadline figure $8M 3-day for Brightburn off $950K previews? I'm still learning when it comes to weekend predicts but to me that's a locked double digit opening. Please let me know if I'm way off base.
  12. May 24-26, 2019 - Memorial Day weekend | 3-day (4-day) Aladdin (2019) | $79.19M ($98.99M) John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum | $22.35M ($27.94M) Avengers: Endgame | $16.23M ($20.28M) Brightburn | $13.30M ($16.63M) Booksmart | $12.69M ($14.86M) POKEMON Detective Pikachu | $13.06M ($16.33M) A Dog's Journey | $4.42M ($5.53M) The Hustle | $4.30M ($5.38M) The Intruder (2019) | $2.61M ($3.26M) Long Shot | $2.47M ($3.09M) Poms | $1.26M ($1.58M) The Sun Is Also a Star | $1.18M ($1.48M) Top 12 total: $175.87M
  13. Nice call - as always - @Porthos! This could just top $80M for the 3-day and kill my club. It gets to $80.16M using the Pirates 5 three day multi.
  14. LOL! I love how it's completely unanimous how Jafar sucks in this. We saw social media reactions like yours that were borderline glowing, but with the caveat that Jafar was pretty bad. Good review, though. I just found it unintentionally funny reading yet another person saying the same thing, especially when the rest of your review is overwhelmingly positive and energetic.
  15. That would be great! May 31 is shaping up to be a huge weekend! Godzilla + Rocketman + Ma + likely strong holds for JW3 and EG. Aladdin will probably drop harshly but its 2nd weekend will still be a big chunk to the total. I wonder what the record is for the weekend with most $10M+ grossers (all films, not just openers).
  16. Here's another poster who puts in a lot of time and effort. Not to mention your enthusiasm is infectious, @captainwondyful. Thanks for everything!
  17. No kidding. Great work indeed. All your time and effort is much appreciated @Porthos!
  18. This is absolutely the best take on this particular situation I've seen on this board. Bravo, and I agree completely.
