  1. I FINALLY got to see GxK and i unsurprisingly loved it!

This is the movie where the MonsterVerse finally abandons all ties it its realistic roots (yes, GvK was somehow a bit more "grounded" than this one) and goes full Showa-ish fantasy bullshit that is really fun in my opinion. They fully comitted to this route and i can very much respect that.

What really suprised me was Kong and how good he functions as a protagonist. Godzilla is a glorified grumpy buddy but it works, especially towards the end. The fights are phenomenal in their stupidity. The humans were tolerable, Dan Stevens was the clear highlight.

Overall, id say this is the same level as GvK for me but for a bit different reasons. Cant wait to watch it again and cant wait to watch it after drinking a bit of good old german beer.

    9/10, masterpiece.

What year is it, 2010?? Sorry to hear that. Thankfully 3D has basically died in my area.

Well it is in Germany so I guess it's different there.

Yes, its gotten better in the last few years, but many action-heavy movies still are mostly shown in 3D (atleast in my area here). I actually think its one big reason why german moviegoing is steadily declining, beeing basically forced to watch movies in 3D if you doesnt want that is not ... good.

Instead, Frozen Empire is behaving almost identically like The Marvels, a movie that the same crowd would uphold as the pinnacle of floppage without mentioning that it was the only MCU flick that the cast couldn't promote due to the strikes. So convenient and this is why regular people should never pay attention to such spinning, much less studio execs and CEOs 🥱

The Marvels would have bombed as hard as it did even if the whole of Hollywood would have promoted it. Promotion and (positive) advertisement (see as well: The Flash with all its celebrity buzz) dont save a movie that is inherently doomed to fail like The Marvels.

Where do you guys think GxK:TNE will land DOM-wise? Can it beat Gareth Edwards’s Godzilla’s $200M? Considering this film has nothing big in April to compete against, where as G2014 had to go against TASM2, X-Men: DOFP, Maleficent and so forth in the summer of 2014.

By now, i think its safe to say that the movie will be the highest-grossing domestically in the MonsterVerse (and possibly worlwide as well, needs 566M+ for that). I see it landing in the 230 - 260M range right now, depending on how good the WOM actually is.

SATURDAY AM WRITETHRU after Friday Night post : This is how a great box office weekend should be. A studio goes into the frame expecting ‘X’, and they wind up with a substantially higher ‘Y’. It was definitely a good Friday for Legendary and Warner Bros with more walk-up business than expected as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire posted a $37M first day (plus $10M previews) putting on the path to a $75M opening weekend. Per Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak, 57% of the audience bought their tickets same-day. There is a path to a bigger weekend, so it won’t be shocking if it hits $80M. Also, the sequel nabbed an A- CinemaScore, which is the second best CinemaScore for a Monsterverse movie after 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, which was also directed by Adam Wingard.

Godzilla x Kong‘s weekend is still the second best U.S./Canada start for a Monsterverse, but also the fifth best Easter weekend opening ever after Warner Bros’ Batman v. Superman ($181M), Universal/Illumination’s Super Mario Bros Movie ($166.4M), Universal’s Furious 7 ($161.2M) and Uni’s The Fate of the Furious ($107.3M).

62% of the audience was led by men with Hispanic and Latino audiences showing up huge at 34%, followed by 31% Caucasian, 18% Asian/other and 17% Black. Sixty-seven percent of GxK‘s crowd were over 25 while 62% were under 35. The under 25 set at 33% gave the Adam Wingard directed movie an A.

GxK is playing big across the nation, but gigantic in the South, South Central and West with the AMC Burbank its highest grossing theater stateside with close to $83K so far.  IMAX and the PLF screens are driving 38% of the gross with 3D accounting for 19%.

Other jelly beans for GxK: On PostTrak, 96% said the movie either met or exceeded their expectations. Forty-eight percent said they went to the movie because it look fun and exciting, while another 45% said it was part of a franchise they loved. Seventy-two percent want to see a sequel. What influenced moviegoers to go see GxK: 17% said the online trailer, 14% said it was the in-theater trailer, 14% credited social media, while another 14% said they were encouraged by friends and family.

GvK is leading all titles at the weekend box office to a $134.7M total, which is +38% over the same exact period a year ago when Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves opened during a non-holiday weekend. However, compared to last year’s Easter weekend, we’re down this year by -34% and that’s all because of Super Mario Bros. Movie.

This is surprising to me.  So many people I talked to felt that 'Godzilla x Kong' looked like it "jumped the shark" so I am pleased that it was only anecdotal evidence of the franchise slowing down.  Looks like the franchise is bigger than ever...

I would actually argue that with GxK and Minus One, were witnessing the most popular Godzilla has been - probably ever.

It’s supposed to be in the vein of Puss In Boots 2 / SpiderVerse. Not exactly the same aesthetic, but with similar distinctive approach compared to Disney / Pixar.

Still, my main point is that it doesn’t even need to be great to succeed, like The Hobbit.

Still i have high hopes, the director is very good.

After the complete and utter disaster of The Rings of Power, id imagine Tolkien fans either are extremely sceptical now of anything Middle-Earth related that is coming out or maybe in the contrary, will strongly support this movie if its good ofc and respects the lore. I could see both happening.

  8. Re King of the Monsters: I can understand basically all of the criticisms that people, who disliked the movie, have written here. Theyre completely valid. The film has a bad script, the fights are often a bit obscured and the rainy asthetic doesnt make it much better.

But for me (and many other Godzilla fans id say), it was just a pure dream come true to finally see Mothra, Rodan and especially King Ghidorah realized with a Hollywood budget. Every time i watch the monster scenes in the film i can completely overlook the movies flaws because im just happy that such a movie even exists in the first place.

    Big number for GxK.

Honestly surprised too, I figured GvK had the novelty of seeing the two fight each other, but the trailers for GxK were kind of lacking a similar hook to me. Turns out GA just wants monster movies.

I think the combination of the goodwill from GvK + the lack of pure popcorn action films for months now + the current Godzilla rennaissance all played a role here.

And the nature of the MonsterVerse as well in my opinion: The main reason i think why the Series continues to be relevant is that in the 10 years since G14, theres now just been 5 movies and 1 TV show. Thats new content for the fans every 2 years and its probably a way more healthy format for a Cinemativ Universe. The Godzilla/Kong films have still not been overexposed to audiences and with a minimum of 2 years separating every installment, the new movie always feels like something special. Its the Anti-Marvel (especially Phase 4) format, if you will.

Let me guess, they delayed it there too? It was delayed here to the 5th because releasing a big movie during Ramadan in a majority-Muslim nation is financial suicide, as seen by Mario actually performing less than Sonic 2 here, despite tripling it worldwide.

Yes, they delayed it till April 4th. For me personally thats no big issue since i only could have seen it at the earliest on the 2nd anyway.
