The Box Office Buzz, Tracking, and Pre-Sale Thread
reddevil19 replied to Shawn Robbins's topic in Box Office Discussion
I just wanna see it at home - it's been pretty much impossible to get hold of the Abyss (either version) for years. I kinda hate the third act, but I absolutely love the first 2 thirds - it's got great atmosphere, set design and performances driven by Cameron abusing and almost killing everyone on set. What's not to love? -
The Box Office Buzz, Tracking, and Pre-Sale Thread

This is the kind of movie that needs proper positive buzz and the reviews are...less than kind. With the strikes, award buzz would have been its only saving grace, and that is missing. There's also another Fassbender-starring movie that is much better - and streaming at home - and ya, there's absolutely nothing going for it. -
Not surprised. My cinema was dead yesterday. It was just me and my bf in our Marvels screening until the very last couple of trailers started. Ended with 8 of us in an auditorium of over 230 seats. There was more excitement from audiences during the mask-wearing, distancing period of COVID.

6.40 pm screening here in the UK. 8 people in a 230 seat auditorium. Ya...this is what I'm used to seeing on the 4th weekend of a Marvel flick. Also, my bf - who is only familiar with the inner workings of the MCU through what I tell him, who has only seen a couple of the D+ shows and is quite excited about Deadpool and Wolverine teaming up - said this after: "Why in the fuck are they tying a cool property like the X-Men to this joke of a movie"? I actually liked it quite a lot more than my bf - a very casual superhero fan - did. Though I wouldn't say it's a good flick, it's far above Quantumania or Love & Thunder. I don't know what that says about general audiences in general (if anything), but I found it interesting that my casual fan bf now is officially far better versed and more invested in the Fox X-Men flicks than the MCU, because he can't be bothered watching a multitude of TV shows to stay abreast of what the fuck is happening in the MCU.

Marvel have trained their audience to view this as an interconnected web of films - and most of these films aren't really great on their own. It's a case of the aim of the parts truly being better than the individual parts themselves. So you really can't have it both ways. You can't have twenty products in two years, all weaving together and none of them good and then defend the situation saying "why do they have to lead to anything?". Come on man, get real ...

Out of the young cast in GoT, I think he is the best actor, but boy was he wasted in Eternals. Let him emote! There were a lot of issues with Eternals but by far the biggest problem I had was the him and Gemma Chan. Both insipid, lacking charisma both together and apart, when the far more interesting characters barely got anything to do.

See, I think the examples you're giving are just strengthening my point. They were good logistics managers. You can't do that with every MCU movie because not every MCU movie is or SHOULD be a crossover. The Russos didn't write their Avengers movies, and the dialogue was a fairly weak part for Whedon's 2 Avengers flicks, as well as the very flat, uninspired visual style (he has never been able to grow past 90's-00's TV from that respect). To get people excited about crossovers, you need strong individual films, and for that you need good screenwriters and directors with a vision and style, working in harmony.

It's funny because I have the opposite mindset - the Russos were great from a logistic standpoint. IW and EG were feats of logistics more than any moviemaking. And great on them for that. But what Marvel needs is specifically what you said is lacking - movies that stand on their own. That's how you improve on what came before. For that you need proper filmmakers. I agree that indie directors that then are nothing more than marionettes for the studio is not the way to go, but neither are TV producers. Make good movies that stand on their own as just that, with the brain trust worrying about collecting the small seeds that have been planted in those movies and growing them into something bigger. That's why for me the best of the MCU remains Winter Soldier.

I think Deadpool 3 will do well box-office wise. I'm thinking GOTG3 or DS2 level numbers rn. But I have serious doubts regarding its quality and reception (i.e. huge opening, bad legs - again, like DS2). When you follow that up with the 2025 slate, the problems are still there. But...who knows? Maybe Deadpool 3 will be fantastic, and the break on either side of it will make audiences hungry for superhero fare again.
