Weather has been good, but it's pretty standard for this time of the year, which usually sees a strong box office.

I think it's just a lacklustre product in the market.

I still go back to the amazement that all three of sports teams in Toronto are doing poorly or have their seasons done and it's still not seen any impact on the box office. The sports mood is about as bad as I can recall in recent history.

I hadnt thought about the sports teams part-one would think theyd go to movies to get their minds off of it or whatever. Vancouver and Calgary when looking at Furiosa is along the lines for presales (Cal had poor sports showing while Van is in playoffs) but like nothing much. Be interesting to see if Furiosa is gaining any in Toronto when I do that count.

Trying to measure walk ups today. It's challenging due to the staggered afternoon starts, but I grabbed some data in the afternoon and some now.

So far, a 77% increase from the start of the day. Not bad, but not a mass breakout.

One thing that I've been tracking, but not paying too much attention to, is that I find the lack of IMAX sales to be a little surprising. It's under 30% of sales, in a five theatre sample with two IMAX screens.

This isn't Dune or Avatar, but it's still a visual movie that has a strong critical reputation among film buffs. I would have thought it's grabbed more of it's audience from people to the largest screens.

It makes me wonder if it is grabbing a more general/family audience. And if so, maybe it has more potential to leg out a bit. Just a theory.

Have to wonder if the nice weather is having some effect. Where i am weve been having some summer weather of 20 plus most days, and a lot of people are out and about. We are getting into beginning of cottage opening season so have to wonder if thats having an effect. This indeed may be a leg it out more film if those reasons are part of things.

    Comp:

    0.753x Haunted Mansion for $2.3M

Numbers ate still really low, making the standard track fairly useless. I did do a larger 100km radius track, encompassing the broader southern Ontaro market (~8M population, MTC4 being about 70-80% of the market). Even against Haunted Mansion, which underindexed here, it's not doing well.

I'd be curious if it's doing just as bad in other regions in Canada. @DAJK, @Tinalera, if you guys have a chance, can you take a peak. Reynolds should be a draw out of BC I would hope.

Ill take a look-taking care of real life stuff so havent been on as much as Id like. See what I can find out.

What's interesting that's probably been in effect for a few weeks now, is that MTC4 has increased the premium for Dolby theatres. I'm pretty sure it was $3 not that long ago. It's now $5. There's been a baseline price increase not that long ago as well.

5 Dollar Premium??? Boy it shows how long IVE been actually out to a theatre lately!

Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare doesn't look like it's opening in Canada. Which frustrates me for a few reasons. 1) I really want to see it lol. 2) This has been a pattern with every one of Lionsgate's "smaller" releases since Moonfall. 3) Cineplex is now a "distributor" of Lionsgate films in Canada... so I have no clue as to why Canada would forego a release for these movies.

Does anyone in this thread (maybe @Shawn Robbins) have any info on this to be able to shed some light? I'm trying to figure out what's going on but haven't been able to find anything concrete.

I myself cant think of this. I mean this is weird-I didnt even know that not releasing movies in Canada part of North American Market was even a thing. I mean im just throwing this out in the dark here-but (pure absolute speculation here) maybe theres something to do with streaming rights in Canada (maybe its only got an agreement for streaming-if thats a possible thing). Thats the only thing I can think of why, part of some legal tie up with rights stuff.

The issues have resolved for me. They were isolated to Early Access shows or cases where there's a separate listing for a film based on the format (usually IMAX)

It's been a weird thing where Cineplex takes an inconsistent approach. Sometimes they create separate listings, sometimes they don't.

I can't imagine it's a helpful strategy. If I look up a film to see upcoming showtimes, and don't see IMAX screenings, I'll assume it's not in IMAX.

That might explain things. Guess I have to pay attention to whether what film type its previewing for.

Sadly its always been kind of had that weird bizzaro land where sometimes things just dont make sense when tracking in Canada. Trying to decide what I want to track right now-again the whole Wed "no showtimes available" thing really bugs me lol

EdIT: and yep there are like 8 theatres with the wed IMAX-1 show 7pm, again seen this before. So as you said its like okay Im tracking for wed but its 1 show 1 specific time 1 specific format which doesnt lend well to tracking.

To @DAJK @Tinaleraor any other Canadian trackers, is anyone else having issues with seat previews in Cineplex? It's happening for me mainly for early access shows for Fall Guy and POTA. But generally, things have been glitchy.

I thought it was just temporary issues that would resolve, but it's been going on for a few days now. I'm not sure if it's my end or not.

So did a quick check for Fall Guy for Vancouver and Toronto, and its showing Wed May 1 as "Available" for certain theatres, when I click Im getting the "no show times available". Similar to what ive gotten in the past-sometimes its like theyll wait closer to the date before showing Wed show times with films. Its why I try to avoid films that have a Wed preview time because its harder to keep consistent  show times compared to Thurs and Fri shows-or Ill do shows for Thurs and Fri with a Caveat that the wed shows just arent showing up for me. So yea Id say its a Cineplex thing-just adds another aspect to why Canadian markets can be so "fun" to track:slaphead:

I have been checking recently, but I know Ive had issues in the past where I will see a theatre showing on a presales list, yet when I click it is says "no show times available" and Im like huh??? Happened a few times. Ill take a boo to see if I get issues

Just...  as is always my #1 Piece of Advice: Don't bite off more than you can chew.  🙂

This is why I have had to cut back on the amount I was doing and comps and all that. Was getting to be a bit more than I could, and with my own life just busy I try where I can to get in. It IS easy to fall into the "hey Im on a groove let me do more" track if one isnt prepared for it lol.

On a personal note I AM quite thrilled to see the amount of Canadian trackers now posting in various areas, and posting in the Canada forum as well as here, gives an even bigger picture up here-always good to see  fellow canuckians ;)
