Tuesday (8/14) Thread | Angry Birds 2.6M OD

lion king is a smash. 1.6 billion here we go. -
Avatar: The Last Airbender is not a subset of a larger "Avatar" trademark, but an entire title. Nickelodeon didn't bother trademarking the word "Avatar" because they & Bryke didn't anticipate a sequel series until 2010. So in 2009, James Cameron swooped in and took the larger "Avatar" trademark. Fast forward three years, and TLOK can't be called "Avatar: The Legend of Korra" because it would imply Nickelodeon owns the larger "Avatar" trademark... which they don't.

When factoring in everything Avatar would have grossed more than 3 billion ... according to YOU and Avatar defenders. This is nonsense. Avatar is the least popular top tier highest grossing movie - with the lowest admissions ever. First you claim that Alice was a 1b grosser due to 3D and now it's cause of Johnny Depp? You can't have it both ways. I'm comparing it to Avatar because they are very similar. Both had a crappy/forgettable script and mainly sold well due to the 3D gimmick. Since Avatar is considered a bad movie and no one is looking for a sequel - there is a good chance that A2 will decline like Alice. Disney only gets 1 billion grossers with their nostalgia appealing live action remakes and the mcu, everything else is a bust. Mary Poppins which many thought would do at least 400 million domestically ended up bombing and that was a holiday release. Plenty of blockbusters don't even reach 250 million (detective pikachu, godzilla, rampage etc.) A2 won't be an exception. Transformeras, fast and furious and avengers all continued to make movies and grow their audience. Avatar has been completely forgotten about. That's why it wont increase more than I predicted.

I'm aware. The user just happens to type very similar to you. Figured that you went into hiding after the whole JCS + End Game erasing Avatar from history thing. But I admire you for your nonchalant attitude and lack of embarrassment.

It wasn't a selling point. It was THE selling point. With exchange rates adjusted it's not even close to 3 billion. The movie is comparable to a theme park ride - it was a cool experience but nothing more than that. No one actually cares about the characters - hence why it's forgotten and couldn't stand the test of time. It's one of the few highest grossing movies of all time thats been completely erased from history. I said 1.3 billion max. It's actually going to do even less than that. 500 OS 250 DOM 400 China Avatar made it's money because of the 3D gimmick and the exchange rates. It would have never reached such a high number without it. It's gross is far to inflated and doesn't represent the popularity of the movie. Hence why it has the least admissions amongst the top tier highest grossing movies. Reaching 1 billion is still a struggle for almost every studio. This year only DISNEY or DISNEY related movies have reached that milestone. Disney being an exception to the rule doesn't change that fact. The general audience prefers to stay at home streaming - getting people to come to the cinema is harder than ever before. It's clear as day when only Disney is managing to do that these days. Alice In Wonderland was a success because of the 3D - which Avatar was responsible for, yes. Avatar did indeed usher in the new era of 3D. But just like the movie itself it ended up being a forgotten fad. Avatar 2 will have a similar faith to Alice 2. The movie isn't loved - most people recognise that the script is utter garbage. Also in a post MCU world, which includes GALAXIES and all kinds of magical wonders, Pandora fades into the background. It simply won't be able to compete in the current golden era of cinema. You must live in a cave because Titanic is constantly hailed as one of the best movies of all time. It's always being recognised by both the general audience and critics. Avatar might have been recommended by people at the time of its release when people were caught up in the hype of 3D, but once the dust settled no one cared.
