Not necessarily. Cameron was the first sci fI blockbuster to exploit the release window with Avatar, but their approaches were different. Star Wars going for Christmas was apparently a happy coincidence, because Marvel Studios already had the usually “May 4th" date scheduled. The rest is history and Iger claimed that Christmas are Star Wars dates now iirc.
It's not like putting Star Wars there was a very bold choice when the 2 highest grossing movies of all time had that release date, I wouldn't call that "changing the ball game". I'll leave it at that

Well, changed so much that No Way Home happened last year and exploded.
and TFA exploded because of Avatar?

Since god knows when, yeah.
I don't see how TFA changed the ballgame

I mean, not really? The possibility of large winter storms were one of the reasons why Hollywood historically shied away from plopping blockbusters in the Xmas time period until TFA changed the ballgame. Okay, I'll grant you China, but just speaking domestically it isn't that unexpected.
Either way, a film like A2 should be able to make it up in the Dec 26 - Jan 2 window, or beyond even, if WOM/legs are actually there. Case in point, A1 and its famous snow storm.
TFA was the first blockbuster released in December?

lol that's not helping

I specified average person for a reason, I and you and other people more invested in film and VFX will see the difference. The average lay-person? I don't know if they will.
The point of better VFX in something like Avatar is to create a more tangible immersive experience. It's something that you feel while watching the movie, you don't need to be a discerning viewer

I saw Avatar 2 i know what im saying, is the 3D making you think that, because on 2D both clearly Thanos is better textured, modelled and everything.
You don't know what you're talking about
shot at 0:13 is as flawless as it's ever been

Because we can read the room. China is going to make less than the original did. Europe as a whole will probably make 60% of the first. DOM likely comes in $150-200M less than the first. WOM is good but it's not "OMG you have to experience this!" good like the 1st one was. There is still plenty of unknown on how much it ends up making, but we're talking arguments in the $1.6-2.2B range, no where near $2.9B+
I mean a lot of people are definitely saying this and more. It's not like everyone is saying it's mid, wom doesn't necessarily work like an average. It definitely has that "never before seen" factor, which is huge.

Also...is there an actor more bland and forgettable than Sam Worthington? jfc the man has the charisma of dried paint.
I don't think there is anything particularly wrong with him, I think he does the job. For me he's like what Keanu Reeves was to The Matrix

I wish they would put the French critics on RT instead of the UK ones 😆
they really love this movie holy shit. 13 5 stars review out of 32, only 2 negative ones.

and the WOM is great. On Douban (China's IMDB or Letterboxed), AVATAR2 got an 8.3 out of 10.

The not work for everyone is being exagerated when 90% likes the movie. Is the Wakanda Forever situation again, that if you search the internet you would think people hated it but got an A near A+ cinemascore with 90% of people liking it. But Avatar unlike Black Panther 2 is not a heavy movie. So Avatar 2 could benefit like the first plus no competition.
you mean fan heavy?
-
A cinemascore, same as the first, I'll happily take it
clearly a lot of people really LOVE this movie from the comments I'm seeing, but I can see where it doesn't work for everyone. Did not expect A+

I know it's hyperbole but these overblown predictions is what causing doom n gloom
Well yeah it's a joke...
But there is no doom n gloom for me. I don't know who here has personal stakes in how much a movie makes, but not me. It's just a game for me. If Cameron beats the record, cool! If he doesn't? Life goes on, it's not that serious.
I think people claiming that expecting Cameron to do the same thing he has done twice in a row is "unrealistic" are bringing their own negativity here. Nothing wrong with dreaming big, just hoping for mid results is boring af in my opinion. Not that there is anything wrong with mid predictions, if that's what you believe is going to happen, then that's perfect. But why shame others for seeing big things?

It's kind of funny but I hate the Avatar antifandom so much (omg my cartoon is so much better than the blue people movie!). It's the only reason I'm rooting for each Cameron sequel to make 3 trillion dollars

Great fun but in all honesty, as a giant Cameron nerd, I don't think Avatar 2 is the world destroyer Titanic and Avatar were.
It's not that it's better or worst, it's that those movies were essentially perfectly tuned blockbusters. Perfectly engineered to make boat loads of money.
The main issue I think is the script, it's the first big movie Cameron is directing that was written by a writers' room instead of mostly just himself, and it shows. It's less focused, less efficient storytelling.
But I'm only "disappointed" here because I was essentially hoping for some form of "perfection", which I didn't really get here.
It also didn't help that I had to settle for a regular 3d screening and that of course, it wasn't bright enough. Definitely took away from the experience.
Next time, I'm going to watch this on the best biggest screen available, maybe with slightly lowered expectations, and I know I'm going to have a great time because there is a lot of cool stuff in there.
As for how much this movie will make? I had no idea before, I still have no idea now. I think it's the biggest wild card in history in terms of box office. But I won't be disappointed whatever it makes, whatever happens happens. If this isn't the big one, there is always the next one! (barring an unlikely catastrophe)

Something Cameron has undoubtedly succeeded at (and that's a crucial point if this is going to be a record run) is making something that people have not seen before. This is something he always sets out to do but even I didn't anticipate he would succeed at that so categorically. I expected to see a lot more of: "this looks just like the first Avatar!". Not at all. Even the worst reviews have to concede that it is technically impressive. This movie will clearly have that "it" factor going forward that will undoubtedly give it legs.
How many times have I seen people saying things like: "oh nobody is impressed by CG anymore!", "vfx are so common now, Avatar will be nothing special!".
Then you read something like this, and I've seen a lot of this kind of raving (top RT critic):
https://www.reelviews.net/reelviews/avatar-the-way-of-water
SpoilerIt’s finally here. After years of missed release dates related to postproduction issues, James Cameron’s oft-delayed sequel to 2009’s Avatar has finally arrived. Was it worth the 13-year wait? Unquestionably. It’s difficult to overstate how impressive and potentially game-changing this motion picture is. Nothing before has prepared audiences for the immersion offered by Avatar: The Way of Water when seen in optimal circumstances. The film’s straightforward narrative (which isn’t going to garner any writing nominations) plays a distant second fiddle to the amazing technical leap forward that this movie offers. If theatrical movies are going to survive, this is the future – the kind of experience that will get me off my sofa and into a well-upholstered theater seat. The Way of Water gave me three-plus hours like no other three-plus hours I have spent in a multiplex. By alternating fast-paced action sequences with slower, more contemplative stretches, Cameron calms the blood pressure before repeatedly elevating it. Those in search of a rich emotional experience or complex storyline won’t find either here, but those things have never been the director’s bread-and-butter. He offers enough of both to allow his vision and his team’s technical bravura to smooth out any pacing inconsistencies and take the viewer down a dizzying rabbit hole. Awesome.
It still echoes some of the negative things that have been said, but it's clear that this movie has something special that will garner up a lot of curious who don't want to miss out

Looks like opening week in South Korea will be about 13-18% below Frozen 2’s opening. That’s a disappointment.
so 150%-200% more than the first Avatar?
