Yeah, retire the term 'box office poison'. Robbie led I, Tonya to big numbers based on her performance alone and has starred in smashes like WoWS, Suicide Squad and Tarzan. Granted those films had other things going for them but true BO poison should repulse audiences regardless.

Gosling has had The Notebook, Crazy, Stupid, Love and a respectable opening for Blade Runner. His less commercially appealing ventures open consistently around 11M, much more than most other actors can open films to.

Even if box office poison is hyperbolic, nobody ever expected this film to open to even half of what it's going to do as a result of the leads, which is part of why this soon-to-be runaway hit is so surprising

huh ? Weren't both Lady Bird & Little Women Boxoffice hits ?? Lady Bird's budget was $10M and it collected $80M. Little Women's budget was $40M and it collected $220M

Shit, thanks for the correction on Little Women especially! That really legged out over Christmas. I think they're both incredible films fwiw, so I'm glad my memory was faulty there.

I absolutely stand by the idea that Gosling and Robbie are not active BO draws at all, though. Doubly impressive for this movie!

  4. Barbie is one of the most astonishing breakouts in recent times, imo. A fantastic, but box office poison central duo, underwhelming/vague trailers with flat comedy (at least to me), an acclaimed indie director at the helm who has yet to direct a BO hit, and a horribly broke and mismanaged studio behind it. Yes, the IP has tremendous potential, but the idea that we are looking at a potential all time OW for WB is frankly shocking, even with great reviews.

  5. My bottom line with Tenet is, if I don't care about what's happening, and if the movie clearly doesn't care whether you can follow its labyrinthine plot or not, why should I remain invested as a viewer? It's just a well-crafted mindless action movie with awful sound mixing and a plank of wood for a lead. And I really liked JDW in BlackKklansman!

Easily the nadir of Nolan's studio career. So glad that he seems to have gone back to the drawing board for this one.

I can only imagine it’s like Tenet insofar as the plot moves faster than you can keep up with, but I’ll defer to someone who’s actually seen it.

I could see the people who were confused by Dunkirk's structure also being confused by this, based on what I'm hearing. As someone who thinks Dunkirk is Nolan's best since Inception, this excites me.

I think what I mean is that Mcquarrie loves capturing the action in wide frames and doesn't use cuts, to emphasize the action and the stunt performance...reason why Fallout and RN are S-tier.

This one though has so much intercutting between different scenes during key action sequences that it was taking me out.

Then the bike jump. The buildup to that was so long drawn out and felt jarring. Remember how much amped you got during the buildup of the HALO jump in Fallout. And when Cruise finally jumped, the scene played out in full without cutting to other characters.

The Venice chase scene is another good one. I want uninterrupted shots of Cruise running with great background music like the one in Fallout. If you're cutting to other characters so frequently in the middle of Cruise running, I am just not feeling it!

I think some of this can be chalked up to COVID protocols and complications, speaking as a Head of Dev at a NY prod Co. and knowing how limiting those complications and safety measures were. I do think the hand to hand combat took a serious hit here. I personally disagree with the Cruise running thing, just because the intercutting between him running and his intended destination added a lot of urgency for me.

The more I think about DR1, the more get irked.

It deserves to make less than Fallout

There are three 20-30 minute chase/action sequences in this, plus smaller fist fights and little segments interspersed in between, so I'm not sure how one of your criticisms - a lack of action - holds water
