Anticipation and awareness does not necessarily mean jack shit. Detective Pikachu had crazy trailer view numbers that absolutely did not translate into comparable box office.

I can't help but feel like people viewed it as a fun proof of concept trailer, but were largely uninterested in seeing a full movie about that. It also, along with Godzilla 2, got lost in the shuffle of the incredibly packed summer 2019 slate. It's pretty telling that the last time we heard of any mention of a sequel was two and a half years ago, and that was before the movie actually came out. Justice Smith, the live action lead, came out a couple of months ago and claimed that a sequel was unlikely. I wonder if Legendary will ever do anything else with that IP. They'll probably let it lapse and Illumination will likely pick up the license.

  2. Never thought I'd see fucking Geeks and Gamers of all people quoted here, but here we are. This guy was a pain in the ass during the releases of both The Last Jedi and Captain Marvel.

Ironically for the former, their bitching and moaning was a major reason as to how and why The Rise of Skywalker turned out the way it did. Hopefully Marvel doesn't bend the knee since their "controversial" movie is being continued soon.

I take it that you missed the part in the latest trailer where King Shark gets thrown around by a giant kaiju sized starfish?

I said "explicitly mentioned". Of course I noticed the starfish from the trailers. I'm just pointing out how they never revealed its true name until now. They called him Project Starfish or something.

Where's the evidence of that? Because it ain't in the box office numbers. The lack of hype for The Suicide Squad continues to show audiences have no interest in the new, course-corrected DCEU.

I'd blame that on the general lack of direction for this franchise. There's no real future. No real endgame to build up to. No structure. No foundation.

And yet they still intend to release 3 (4 if you include the essentially-Elseworlds Batman movie) movies all in the next year. I'm really curious how those do.

As a funny aside, in a normal world we likely would've started seeing trailers for Black Adam by now, since it was originally set for this December.

  5. This is definitely bombing. A theatrical exclusive launch while a new, lethal wave of COVID begins? Sounds like a mess that is being dumped much like New Mutants (ironically that also was an August "release").

Disney probably wishes they made this movie themselves so that they could legally send it to Disney+ Premier Access and at least make some money off of it.

  6. I'm fully expecting No Way Home to shift to March/July of 2022 (with a Phase 4 reshuffle to accomodate for it) while Venom 2, a far cheaper and safer bet, takes the holiday 2021 slot.

The fact of the matter is that the new variants are making our future uncertain again much like when this whole mess first started. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we go into another global lockdown this fall and the movie slate undergoes another major shift. Better safe than sorry.

I just hope I can catch The Suicide Squad at my local mall's theater before the remaining theaters in my area succumb to their wounds and die. One near me got shuttered sometime after theaters closed where I live in November of last year.

  7. If it's as good as some people are claiming it to be, then I really hope it gets the appreciation it deserves within the next few years. Because it's definitely going to lose money for the studio at this point. How much is not certain. But the stench of the first movie is still alive and well if Birds of Prey is any indication. And in the middle of a pandemic, I just don't see people risking their lives to go see a sequel to a movie they hated.

  8. I'm honestly starting to think this is going to outright flop. No real draws, the foul stench of the first movie (which also killed Birds of Prey) and the HBO Max dual release make for a highly toxic cocktail. James Gunn should be thankful the Peacemaker series has already started filming, because otherwise the plug would have been pulled.

Regardless, I'm still glad he got to make the film he wanted. He has Guardians of the Galaxy 3 in the wings, so he shouldn't have trouble bringing food to the table anytime soon.

  9. Yeah, we're not in triple digit territory quite yet. Those projections always seemed overly optimistic to me. It's a simultaneous streaming release, certain Asian territories are not fully reopening just yet, and it's only been a couple of weeks since F9.

The first triple digit launch of the new era will likely be No Way Home, no doubt the most highly anticipated Marvel film right now.

  10. This was a borderline fantasy film, and I loved almost every second of it. The comic relief characters ride a car with rockets duct taped onto it (built by the Tokyo Drift blokes no less) to space. Two different vehicles that Dom is in crash violently and end up barrel rolling a bunch of times and yet he survives without any injuries to speak of. Hell, he even straight up jumps out of one during the third act. And don't even get me started on the magnets, which are powerful enough to attract dozens of cars and even some electrical wires.

Whatever form Fast 10 ends up taking (the current plan seems to be an Avengers-like two part event), it's easily among my most anticipated movies of the near future.

If they’re really not going to bother trying to course correct, what was even the point of bringing in the guy who wrote the Harry Potter movies and pushing the movie back by a year?

My guess is that Steve Kloves was a studio hire in an attempt to make this series more well-liked among general audiences since he wrote pretty much the entire cinematic Harry Potter saga.

Of course, judging by ViewerAnon's comments, it looks like Rowling has gotten her way yet again. That sounds like a troubled production to me. The inevitable Hollywood trade exposee is going to be fun. And after getting burned hard on Justice League, Warner might just cut their losses this time instead of repeating the Whedon reshoot mess.

  12. So they're basically doubling down on everything people hated about the last movie instead of just shelving this flaccid series and repurposing the Dumbledore v. Grindenwald duel as an HBO Max original?

Didn't expect anything less from a bigoted hack like Rowling. It'll be interesting to see the reactions when this mess bombs Dark Phoenix-style. With any other studio, the franchise would've been fridged after that, but with a stubborn mule like Rowling at the helm, who knows what's coming?
