Currently at 80/100 on Critics' Choice. At what time is the embargo going to drop?
-
The fact of the matter is, sometimes people just don't care. No matter how much time and effort you put into a project, if the public isn't interested even after all your efforts, it's best to just take the L and move on. It happened with In the Heights, and it's likely happening here too.
Had we gotten this back in 2016, maybe things would be different. It would have been just half a year after Deadpool too.

I've pretty much given up on The Suicide Squad at this point. Hopefully Free Guy fares well at least. The reviews for that are dropping tomorrow, so we'll see how those affect the presales.
-
This looks like the first movie on steroids. Luckily I enjoyed that, so if theaters in my area are still open by then, I'm on board.

Heads up: Apparently we're getting a new trailer for this movie later today.
This guy also revealed the releases of the GvK and Shang-Chi trailers before we got official confirmation on those. Keep that in mind.

The pressure is on for Shang-Chi, folks. If it does well, them the rest of the year should be fine. If not, then we'll be in delay season yet again.
You want that No Way Home trailer? Go throw Simu Liu a bone.

Um... I think we might have just gotten the first official confirmation of the main selling point of this movie thanks to an absent-minded licensee:

Surprisingly soft drop, especially for a Shyamalan film released in the middle of a pandemic. Not bad!

Sorta surprised how Suicide Squad is doing considering how hyped up it seemed to be.
Don't be. We all saw what happened with Birds of Prey. People detested the first movie, so any sequel to or spinoff from that might as well be a stillborn. The stench is simply too powerful. I'm shocked that this movie was even made at all.
Even without COVID, there was simply no way in hell this was ever going to be profitable at all. I just hope when this inevitably bombs it doesn't affect Marvel's confidence in James Gunn.

I accidentally put in an unmarked spoiler in my previous impressions and got slapped by a mod, so I'll give it another try.
I saw this movie yesterday since WB decided to give us a privilege this time and release it where I live a week before most of the world. It is easily the best movie in the DCEU/Snyderverse thus far, even better than Shazam. James Gunn's talent is on full display here, and while it is a very raunchy film, there is a surprising amount of heart and sincerity here that reminds me of his Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
King Shark stole the show and is my favourite out of the main cast. Peacemaker was great, and I really enjoyed Ratcatcher too. Joel Kinnaman was surprisingly entertaining as well, a far cry from the douchebag I saw from clips of the first movie (which I have no intention of watching anytime soon).
SpoilerAnd Starro of all DC Comics characters being the final enemy was just the cherry on top. Very glad to see acid trips like him on a big budget Hollywood joint like this. Shame he died though, as I would have liked to see him fight the Justice League (whenever WB decides to try that again) at some point, since he was their first major opponent.
The Taika Waititi and Pom Klementieff cameos were nice shoutouts to the Marvel fans in the crowd.
I highly recommend seeing this, either on the big screen if you can or HBO Max next week. Absolutely worth it!

Also, the Deadline article for some reason believes early tracking for the film was in the low 90s?!? Do they seriously think Clifford is gonna hit 90 milliion?!?
Yeah, no idea what they mean by that. It would take some insane luck to hit that number worldwide since Clifford is a very US-centric IP. Ask anyone foreign about it and they'll likely ask "Who?".

Paramount doesn't want to change anything. This is just fear of the Delta variant and its effects at the box office. This is the first of many movies that will be delayed from the Fall. We mentioned this on last week's weekend thread.
Yeah, the writing's slowly manifesting itself onto the wall. Dune and Matrix 4 are the only major movies that are definitely staying where they are thanks to HBO Max. Everything else is not safe anymore.
The one silver lining to, say, No Way Home moving to 2022 is that it'll coincide with the Spider-Man character's 60th anniversary, Tobey!Spidey's 20th and Andrew!Spidey's 10th. And there's also Spider-Verse 2 set for that year. An epic anniversary celebration with both the next big live action Spidey epic (3 live-action Spider-Men all coming together to celebrate 60 years of an iconic hero just writes itself) and the sequel to one of the most beloved capefilms of all time sounds enticing and could make up for the delay.

This is probably why Waterston is barely in this one. Rowling is such a petty bitch.
-
If the world was fair and just, then this would easily outgross the original. Watching this inevitably bomb won't be fun, to put it lightly.

Rave reviews did not save In the Heights and it sure hell won't save this. The stench of the first movie, the dual HBO Max launch, mediocre marketing and the pandemic still limiting the potential of theaters everywhere make for a highly toxic and lethal cocktail.
I wouldn't mind traveling to a parallel universe where not only was this the Suicide Squad movie we got back in 2016, but also the pandemic never happened. I'll always wonder how well it could've done.

Both this and The Suicide Squad are coming out this Friday in my region.
Take a wild guess which one I'll go out of my way to see on the big screen.

Nice! I was wondering when this would be available digitally.

The Suicide Squad will be lucky to even get near Birds of Prey numbers at this point.

Assuming this kills the GI Joe film series for good, this article is a rather depressing read: https://screenrant.com/snake-eyes-producer-hasbro-shared-universe-reaction/

Almost all of those reactions calling it "fun" are concerning. Whenever I see that buzzword I just know the actual movie's going to underwhelm me.
-
Pretty much everyone here is likely expecting The Suicide Squad to bomb at this point.

Warner can easily push Matrix to next year
It's part of the HBO Max dual release, so that one will likely stay as is.

Shouldn't we be getting Thursday numbers right about now? Or is it bad enough that studios are holding back as much as they can?
