The trailer views were fantastic for a pre pandemic for a horror. One of the trailers uploaded last month has 26m views. I thought awareness was really high. It’s hard for me to tell because they hit me with all the targeted ads
The likes on that trailer are far too low for 26M views. My guess is that it's because it was used quite frequently as an ad by YouTube. Those count towards the view count.

I don't see Candyman doing very well either since the only GA hook is Jordan Peele's name, and even then he's not the director. We might be seeing him become the black James Cameron in the near future.
The review embargo being just a couple of days before the movie is worrying too, although I hope it turns out well.

Paw Patrol is the only one of the new releases this weekend that anyone is actually interested in. And even then, no one outside of toddlers is going to watch it.
What a dry weekend. All the better for the holdovers like Free Guy and Jungle Cruise. Next week should be a lot more exciting since it has a potentially highly divisive release in 2 Candy 2 Man. And we all know what's coming the week after that.

Venom 2's delay was initially just for Australia before Sony decided to make it worldwide. Keep that in mind.
Are we going to start seeing a new wave of delays because of Australia? I hope not.

We should have a trailer in a little over 7 hours from now.

When are you all going to start tracking Candyman? I know tickets went on sale today.

A $60M 3-day weekend sounds about right to me after looking at the tracking thread. Does Labor Day cause the Sunday drops to be softer than usual? If so, then it might go slightly higher.

11 sold in AMC Empire Dolby. That was fast.
Endgame's entire worldwide run, but it's just the Thursday preview number for Shang-Chi.

We should be getting actuals in about an hour, right?

It took long enough, but the release date for this was finally updated today where I live to match the US launch. A little disappointed, as I though for a moment we'd get the film a whole month earlier.

Wasn't it lifting on the 23rd?

Candyman is such a big wildcard. The IP isn't exactly what I'd call a horror staple like Freddy, Jason or Blumhouse; but Us proved that Jordan Peele has pull. He has a decent following.

I can't help but feel like The Suicide Squad would have been far better of as an HBO Max original. Virus or no virus, it was never going to even come close to profitability in theaters. The stench of the first movie is still strong. Birds of Prey was just a preview in hindsight.
If it was a Max original, at least WB wouldn't have to deal with all the headlines about how poorly the movie is doing in theaters and how it has the biggest second weekend drop in the entire franchise. It would have found an audience there at least.

Cans one. Explain how Free Guy is considered a big success but Suicide Squad a failure?
Free Guy has an astronomically lower budget (I'm going with $100M for simplicity, vs $185M for TSS), far better word of mouth among general audiences and a 45-day theatrical exclusivity (while TSS is available for free online from day one) which should be enough to help it have the rest of August all to itself. A Cruella-like multiplier brings it past the century mark, which would be a decent feat in this day and age.

The Wrap is expecting TSS to drop a whopping 73%.
Why do I get the feeling this tidbit is going to get more attention than the weekend numbers themselves?

$2.2m
Holy shit, it's barely over half of the Thursday preview number. Is it even going to reach BvS's multiplier?

Well, Free Guy got $8M for true Friday, Congratulations, you were all spot on!

$10.2m or so including previews for Free Guy.
Right on the money! Now let's see what happens on Saturday. Flat or increase?

I just woke up and didn't start the run yet. Will post here when I have the numbers.
The Friday numbers should come in in an hour or so, so not really worth it.

Not for a verified score. The cinemascore on TSS was also B+. It was not everyones cup of tea.
Yeah, this is an edgy cult film under that $185M worth of dough. Definitely feels like a film a Tromanian would make.

The overuse of Fantasy in both the promotional material and the actual movie itself is rather annoying. It's a nice tune, but they really overdid it.
Otherwise, this was a pretty good time! What easily could've been disposable entertanment elevates itself into genuine quality thanks to the surprisingly robust story, endearing characters and all around great humour. I really did not see all the emotional scenes coming, especially in a Ryan Reynolds vehicle.
Oh, and there are some 5-star cameos here. You really don't want the last one in particular spoiled. It's a doozy.
Definitely worth a watch, either now in theaters or later this fall when it drops on VOD in 45 days.

Interestingly enough, the verified score has been rather stable so far at 95% (sometimes dropping to 94) unlike The Suicide Squad's which dropped fast.

The first image in that tweet showing off his abs makes it seem like he wants to beat up Chapek or something. Is he going to challenge him to a street fight? I wouldn't mind seeing a vain white dude get his ass kicked.
Weekend Thread: Free Guy 18.79M (34% drop!) | PAW Patrol 13M, Jungle Cruise 6.2M | Protégé 2.9M, Night House 2.87M, Legendary Flop Reminiscence 2M (Worst opening for a movie in 3K theaters!)

Deadline currently has Free Guy's second weekend at $17M
Reminiscence is seemingly barely making more in its entire opening weekend than Free Guy did in its Thursday previews alone
